Following the footsteps of Spanish philosopher Maria Zambrano, Anne Mounic explores the relationships between poetry and philosophy, trying to understand why Plato dismissed poets from his Republic and thus drew an enduring dividing line between reason and myth, reason and imagination. Various instances of poetic dissidence are analysed from a poet’s viewpoint, and the connections between existential philosophy and poetry are highlighted. From Kierkegaard to Lequier, via Shestov, the common ground is the attention to the beginning ‒ the act of subjective consciousness shaping time and opening toward the future and freedom. Works by various poets are discussed. A la suite de certaines analyses de la philosophe espagnole Maria Zambrano, Anne Mounic explore les relations entre poésie et philosophie, s’interrogeant sur les raisons du rejet des poètes par Platon qui dissocia ainsi durablement la raison du mythe, la raison de l’imagination. Des exemples variés de dissidence poétique sont analysés du point de vue du poète et les liens entre philosophie existentielle et poésie sont mis en relief. De Kierkegaard à Lequier, en passant par Chestov, le point commun est l’attention portée au commencement ‒ l’acte de la conscience réflexive modelant le temps, ouvrant à l’avenir et fondant la liberté. LawrenceKatherine Mansfield and Modernism is given a distinct focus in this volume by an emphasis on her under-explored relationship with D. H. Lawrence, to whom, both as artist and person, she felt herself uncannily alike. In addition to investigating Mansfield's literary and biographical relationship with Lawrence, the essays for this volume examine widely varied aspects of Mansfield's modernism including her modernist revision of fairy-tale motifs, and the aesthetic, psychological and political contexts for her work. Further essays place her within a broader international and cultural framework, analysing her important relationship with modernist 'little magazines' and demonstrating how Mansfield and other artists from beyond Europe formed and developed literary modernism. The volume contains a preface and new short stories and poems by internationally-esteemed writers. The relationship between Mansfield and Lawrence is also given dramatic form in an original play-script first published in this volume and based on the period during 1916 when Mansfield and Murry shared a pair of remote cottages with Frieda and D. H. Lawrence at Zennor in Cornwall

Here is presented an existential view of Graves’ poetic, historical, and critical work, whose coherence is being emphasized. Graves’ poetic outlook is first of all ethical and his aesthetics are subservient to his aim of transforming the emotion into existential thought in order to live on, to probe the experience, and to give it its ontological resonance. The divine capacity is to be found within the individual soul. It is immanent but transcends the phenomenological world. Like Kierkegaard, the poet experiences a feeling of certainty when faith animates him. In the present moment, he gets glimpses of paradise – the plenitude of being. No clipped wings, no well polished discipline or well-behaved guidance. In Kierkegaard’s words, the poet’s sphere is not the universal, or general, but the religious, or individual, sphere – faith, not the concept; self-confidence, not conformity to any over-simplified logic. Graves’ stance is paradoxical throughout: he was not politically involved (except immediately after the war when he said he was a Socialist), but evinced some political ideas in his essays. He was not religious, but poetry took the place of religion for him. He evinced a very original poetic outlook, but kept within the limits of well-accepted prosody. He liked to provoke his audience, but his poetry is never provocative. In other words, it is not easy to situate Graves according to time-honoured categories. He is too much of an individual poet to stand general classification. Yet his poems have a direct appeal to the reading public. He is a poet of unrest. This volume is of interest for scholars and poetry readers who wish to renew their appreciation of poetry and go beyond nowadays critical standards through a careful reading of the very powerful thought of a major poet

    Here is presented an existential view of Graves' poetic, historical, and critical work, whose coherence is being emphasized. Graves' poetic outlook is first of all ethical and his aesthetics are subservient to his aim of transforming the emotion into existential thought in order to live on, to probe the experience, and to give it its ontological resonance. The divine capacity is to be found within the individual soul. It is immanent but transcends the phenomenological world. Like Kierkegaard, the poet experiences a feeling of certainty when faith animates him. In the present moment, he gets glimpses of paradise - the plenitude of being. No clipped wings, no well polished discipline or well-behaved guidance. In Kierkegaard's words, the poet's sphere is not the universal, or general, but the religious, or individual, sphere - faith, not the concept; self-confidence, not conformity to any over-simplified logic. Graves' stance is paradoxical throughout: he was not politically involved (except immediately after the war when he said he was a Socialist), but evinced some political ideas in his essays. He was not religious, but poetry took the place of religion for him. He evinced a very original poetic outlook, but kept within the limits of well-accepted prosody. He liked to provoke his audience, but his poetry is never provocative. In other words, it is not easy to situate Graves according to time-honoured categories. He is too much of an individual poet to stand general classification. Yet his poems have a direct appeal to the reading public. He is a poet of unrest. This volume is of interest for scholars and poetry readers who wish to renew their appreciation of poetry and go beyond nowadays critical standards through a careful reading of the very powerful thought of a major poet.

    Le « mal », impensé collectif, prend corps au gré de diverses représentations mythiques, poétiques, graphiques, musicales. Sorcières, guérisseuses, Machiavels, Antéchrists, voire bestiaire infernal, incarnent au théâtre ou dans la littérature pamphlétaire des xvie et xviie siècles ces « agents du diable » censés rendre visibles les dangers de l'invisible, mais que seuls leurs masques permettent de démasquer. La « diabolisation » de l'adversaire politique autorise une «chasse aux sorcières» qui n'a rien de métaphorique, mais au théâtre comme sur la scène politique, elle permet aussi la mise en évidence des jeux pervers du discours, le mal aux prises avec les mots, masque de l' « équivoque » qui ne parle pas seulement par la voix des sorcières comme dans Macbeth, mais inscrit l'ambivalence, menace de dévotement, comme mal au cœur de tout discours. L'ambivalence contient en elle la parodie, qui ne retient de l'invisible que le risible, mais elle permet aussi toutes les ruses de l'imaginaire pour surmonter les traumatismes du corps et de l'esprit, comme chez Graves ou Coleridge. Le théâtre lyrique, « chant des Enfers », témoigne aussi de cette « double voix ». Divertissement entre éthique et esthétique avec Purcell, ou affrontement idéologique entre choeurs des opprimés et chœurs des oppresseurs chez Haendel, il peut aussi prendre le relais du tragique : l'amalgame sensationnel, « théâtral », entre les monstres des enfers païens et l'enfer chrétien prive ce lieu par excellence du mal de toute référence métaphysique, pour mieux isoler comme nouveau « mal » le seul malheur de la passion trop humaine. L'enfer traditionnel se réduit à ses propres représentations parodiques, combien moins angoissantes que l'ontologie infernale proposée dans le Faust de Marlowe, égale à la contingence de l'être-là sans lieu ni durée définis.

    NOUS SOMMES PORTÉS à admirer les figures littéraires que la tradition nous a léguées. Dans un même temps, un mouvement de répulsion nous saisit lorsqu'on songe à la façon dont les politiques de tous bords ont pu utiliser certains grands récits mythiques. Mais peut-on raisonnablement croire en une continuité entre le texte littéraire, qui serait d'essence noble, et la vie politique, qui ferait un vil usage de ce précieux héritage ? La distinction n'est pas si tranchée, et c'est précisément cette ambivalence des œuvres d'art - poèmes, romans, pièces de théâtre, opéras ou films - qui s'avère intéressante. Si les mythes, qui possèdent souvent une dimension religieuse ou sacrée à l'origine, mettent en lumière des enjeux philosophiques, éthiques et métaphysiques, ils sont aussi porteurs d'une réflexion d'ordre politique. Cet ouvrage explore les arcanes de ces lectures politiques des mythes littéraires, peu étudiées jusqu'à présent, en privilégiant une période particulièrement mouvementée : le XXe siècle. La Révolution russe, l'éclatement de l'Europe en 1918, la naissance de « l'Empire américain », la montée des totalitarismes, la Shoah, Hiroshima, la décolonisation ou la guerre froide sont autant de douloureuses remises en question dont on trouve l'écho dans des œuvres qui font appel à de grandes figures mythiques « revisitées ».
