    Depuis quelques années, la question resurgit avec force : peut-on séparer l'œuvre de son auteur ? Du Nobel attribué à Peter Handke aux César à Roman Polanski, sans parler du prix Renaudot à Gabriel Matzneff, le débat fait rage. De même, le passé nazi de grands penseurs du XXe siècle, à commencer par Heidegger, trouble notre appréciation de leur legs, tandis que l'inscription d'un Céline ou d'un Maurras au livre des commémorations nationales a suscité une âpre querelle. Faut-il considérer que la morale des œuvres est inextricablement liée à celle de leurs auteurs ? Et bannir les œuvres lorsque leur auteur a fauté ? Loin de l'invective, ce court essai entend mettre en perspective, historique, philosophique et sociologique, cette question, en analysant les prises de position dans ces " affaires ". Mais loin du " tout se vaut ", il tranche, offrant à chacun les moyens de cheminer intellectuellement sur un terrain semé d'embûches.

    À la croisée de la sociologie de la culture et des approches postcoloniales, cette thèse explore les mécanismes par lesquels des écrivains contemporains originaires de pays francophones d’Afrique subsaharienne accèdent à la reconnaissance littéraire. Le matériau empirique comprend des archives, des entretiens avec des auteurs, des éditeurs et des professeurs, des observations de manifestations culturelles, ainsi qu’une enquête statistique sur 404 écrivains socialisés dans cette région du monde, actifs entre 1983 et 2008. Leur légitimation se fait en deux vagues distinctes : le tournant des années quatre-vingt puis le milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix. L’accroissement du nombre de titres parus, l’importance prise par le roman dans la hiérarchie des genres littéraires et l’évolution des possibilités éditoriales contribuent à structurer un espace littéraire africain. L’enjeu de cet espace est la définition légitime de l’écrivain africain, liée à la nature de son rapport à l’Afrique. Depuis les années quatre-vingt, la population d’auteurs étudiés, qui constitue une élite sociale et culturelle marquée par la mobilité, se féminise continûment, se sédentarise hors d’Afrique et se professionnalise. Les éditeurs situés à Paris, où s’affirme un secteur spécialisé, jouent un rôle décisif sur un marché du livre en partie dissocié des marchés qui prévalent en Afrique. Des études de cas s’articulent à l’analyse de ces évolutions globales : celle du manifeste « pour une littérature-monde en français » envisagé comme une mobilisation collective, celle de la représentation de la colonisation dans les œuvres d’Amadou Hampâté Bâ et d’Ahmadou Kourouma, celle de courriers de lecteurs At the crossroads of the sociology of culture and postcolonial studies, this dissertation explores the mechanisms by which contemporary writers from Francophone countries of sub-Saharan Africa attain literary recognition. The empirical material comprises archives, interviews with writers, publishers, and cultural agents; ethnographic observations of cultural events; and a statistical survey of 404 writers who were socialized in this part of the world, and who were active between 1983 and 2008. Their legitimation follows two waves: the first occurs in the early eighties and the second in the mid-nineties. The increase in the number of publications, the importance of the novel in the hierarchy of literary genres, and the evolution of the publishing industry combine to structure an African literary space. Its stake is the legitimate definition of the African writer, related to the nature of the writer’s relationship to Africa. The authors located in this space are socially elite and often mobile. From the eighties onwards, the number of new female writers has increased steadily; writers are more professionalized and more often settled outside Africa. Publishers in Paris have played a decisive role in a book market partly dissociated from the markets prevailing in African countries. The analysis of these global evolutions is complemented by case studies: the controversy surrounding the manifesto “Toward a World Literature in French” seen as a collective mobilization; the representation of colonization in the texts of Amadou Hampâté Bâ and Ahmadou Kourouma; and letters from readers

    The French Writers' War, 1940-1953, is a remarkably thorough account of French writers and literary institutions from the beginning of the German Occupation through France's passage of amnesty laws in the early 1950s. To understand how the Occupation affected French literary production as a whole, Gisèle Sapiro uses Pierre Bourdieu's notion of the "literary field." Sapiro surveyed the career trajectories and literary and political positions of 185 writers. She found that writers' stances in relation to the Vichy regime are best explained in terms of institutional and structural factors, rather than ideology. Examining four major French literary institutions, from the conservative French Academy to the Comité national des écrivains, a group formed in 1941 to resist the Occupation, she chronicles the institutions' histories before turning to the ways that they influenced writers' political positions. Sapiro shows how significant institutions and individuals within France's literary field exacerbated their loss of independence or found ways of resisting during the war and Occupation, as well as how they were perceived after Liberation

    The French Writers' War, 1940-1953, is a remarkably thorough account of French writers and literary institutions from the beginning of the German Occupation through France's passage of amnesty laws in the early 1950s. To understand how the Occupation affected French literary production as a whole, Gisèle Sapiro uses Pierre Bourdieu's notion of the "literary field." Sapiro surveyed the career trajectories and literary and political positions of 185 writers. She found that writers' stances in relation to the Vichy regime are best explained in terms of institutional and structural factors, rather than ideology. Examining four major French literary institutions, from the conservative French Academy to the Comité national des écrivains, a group formed in 1941 to resist the Occupation, she chronicles the institutions' histories before turning to the ways that they influenced writers' political positions. Sapiro shows how significant institutions and individuals within France's literary field exacerbated their loss of independence or found ways of resisting during the war and Occupation, as well as how they were perceived after Liberation.

    La crise de l'autorité, dont les origines remontent au seizième siècle et qui est susceptible de définir jusqu'à nos jours toute la période moderne, n'empêche pas la notion d'autorité de conserver sa pertinence et sa fonction régulatrice dans l'ordre de la littérature, où elle aide à penser l'idée d'auteur. C'est l'hypothèse dont ce volume procède, en regroupant tous les articles qu'a suscités le Groupe φ au long de deux années de séminaire et au terme d'un colloque international - à l'instar des programmes et des ouvrages précédents du Groupe (Littératures sous contrat, L'engagement littéraire, Littérature et exemplarité). Il s'est agi, pour un ensemble d'une quarantaine de chercheurs, de relever dans une perspective de théorie littéraire le défi lancé en philosophie politique par Hannah Arendt dans La Crise de la culture : « En pratique aussi bien qu'en théorie, nous ne sommes plus en mesure de savoir ce que l'autorité est réellement. ». La faillite pluri-séculaire de l'autorité comme tradition, et la critique moderne et contemporaine de l'auctorialité comme garantie du sens, promeuvent des formes singulières et paradoxales de fonction-autorité ou d'effet-autorité en littérature, en suscitant les modalités originales de leur reconnaissance ou de leur contestation. Quatre mouvements composent ce volume, qui s'achève sur un épilogue (étude et entretien) consacré par Jean-Louis Jeannelle à l'œuvre critique de Susan R. Suleiman, professeure à l'Université de Harvard.

    Los trabajos aquí reunidos abordan las intervenciones de la literatura en los procesos históricos de transición del siglo XX al siglo XXI, en el momento en que la democracia está por construir o consolidar. En el contexto actual, en el que tanto la discursividad como la representación democrática atraviesan una profunda crisis, escribir la democracia pasa a ser una tarea política, cultural y estética central. El presente libro propone un estudio comparativo inédito de la literatura en régimen democrático, desde el final de la Guerra Fría hasta las Primaveras Árabes. A través de estudios de casos que abordan la justicia literaria y la democracia en España, América latina, la India o el Maghreb, y mediante un diálogo final con cuatro novelistas españoles, esta aproximación transnacional cuestiona la pérdida de centralidad del modelo español de «transición consensual» y sus líneas de fractura recientes que revelan la emergencia de nuevas relaciones entre literatura y democracia. Cet ouvrage questionne la place et le rôle de la littérature dans les processus de transition de la troisième vague démocratique des années 1974-2005, depuis les transitions latino-américaines des années 1980 jusqu'aux expériences les plus récentes des révolutions démocratiques des printemps arabes. Les études de spécialistes venus de disciplines et d'horizons culturels divers (France, Espagne, Portugal, États-Unis, Royaume-Uni) permettent de saisir à l'échelle globale les mutations contemporaines des enjeux de la démocratisation dans le champ littéraire, et explorent la construction politique d'un monde commun dans l'expérience de la littérature.

    Concentration croissante de l’édition, montée en puissance des agents littéraires, emprise des contraintes commerciales sur la circulation des livres, domination de l’anglais d’un côté, diversification des langues traduites de l’autre… Les flux de traductions favorisent-ils le dialogue entre communautés nationales ? Sont-ils au contraire l’expression d’un impérialisme économique qui s’accompagne d’une hégémonie culturelle ? Première analyse sociologique du marché mondial de la traduction, l’enquête menée par Gisèle Sapiro et son équipe offre une radiographie passionnante de notre paysage éditorial : circulation des œuvres d’un pays à l’autre, logiques du marché, spécificités de la réception, stratégies d’universalisation. Ou comment, contre la « marchandisation » du livre, une autre mondialisation éditoriale se fait jour, qui passe par des réseaux intellectuels, des alliances entre petits éditeurs indépendants et défenseurs de la diversité culturelle.
