For Erich Kästner, moral convictions and political action were one and the same. He initially based this stance on a feeling that he saw pronounced in children, artists, and outsiders. The events of the war transformed this conviction, and Kästner became even more political in the fields of literature and journalism after 1945. This volume traces his development between moral politics and political morality.

The Viennese playwright, novelist, and short-story writer Veza Canetti was born in 1897 into a mixed Sephardic-Ashkenazi Jewish family and died in 1963 in London. Part of the avant garde in 1920s Vienna (where she met her future husband and Nobel Prize winner, Elias Canetti), from 1932 she wrote radical short stories drawn from everyday life for the Vienna 'Arbeiter-Zeitung.' After censorship under the so-called Corporate State reduced her opportunities for publication, she disguised her critique in irony and humor, but from then on published little. Until 1990, when her first novel, 'Yellow Street,' was finally published, Veza was known only as her husband's muse and literary assistant. As more of her writings appeared, critics became convinced that it was he who was responsible for her decline into obscurity, notwithstanding his protestations of support and admiration. This biography tells a more nuanced story, presenting Veza's literary career against the background of her troubled times, drawing on Elias's unpublished papers to assess their literary partnership, showing how their early writings constituted a private dialogue on topics as diverse as feminism and Jewish identity and how several key themes in his work are anticipated in hers. Julian Preece is Professor of German at the University of Wales, Swansea.

Abbas Khider (b. 1973) has established himself as one of the leading literary voices of refugees and marginalised communities in Germany today. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Khider was at a young age a vocal critic of Saddam Hussein’s regime, during which he was jailed and tortured before fleeing the country. As a refugee, he crossed many countries before arriving in Germany, where he was eventually granted asylum. His own life experiences have served as a departure point for his novels, which similarly explore the refugee experience and the challenges that migrants to Europe face. This volume represents the first collection of essays devoted to Khider’s works to date. The contributions analyse his narrative works and probe important questions relating to political, cultural, and linguistic identity in Germany today. While his works explore what it means to be an immigrant, they do so with a wry sense of humour and an insight into the human condition that also reflect on the political situation in Germany today. His award-winning novels, including Der falsche Inder (2008, The Village Indian, 2013) and Ohrfeige (2016, A Slap in the Face, 2019), which have been translated into English, are discussed in detail. Additionally, an original interview with the author offers insight into his writing process and influences. «Almost two decades into the US War in Iraq and the change of Saddam Hussein’s regime, this timely and rich collection of essays offers a multi-faceted examination of the works of the Iraqi-German author Abbas Khider, one of the rising stars in German literature today. Contextualizing Khider’s novels and non-fictional works in post-9/11 Islamophobia, seen especially in the wake of arrival of over a million refugees in Germany since 2015, Coury and Machtans have brought together a diverse set of voices that revisit many essential questions concerning the multilingual register of German «national» literature in the twenty-first century through filters of migration, politics, and religion. With an illuminating Introduction framing the thoughtful essays, this volume will be of interest to readers of Khider in German and English, contemporary European literature, as well as scholars of Migration and Refugee Studies. The book would also serve as an excellent sourcebook for teaching Khider.»(B. Venkat Mani (Professor of German, University of Wisconsin-Madison), author of Cosmopolitical Claims and Recoding World Literature)...

In November 2002, an international conference was held at the Institute of Germanic Studies in London in order to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Hermann Hesse's birth. Twenty distinguished speakers from North and South America, Russia, Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom attended the three-day conference with the specific aim of exploring the continuing importance of this widely read German-language author. This volume brings together the various responses to the complex challenge that Hesse, whose sheer success is sometimes seen as detracting from his status, presents to literary scholarship around the world. The author's current image among readers and scholars is approached from several distinct thematic and theoretical perspectives, with the objective of providing a concise overview of current research. The volume offers new readings of a number of Hesse's seminal works and makes a significant contribution to academic research into his past and present standing as a global icon. As the title suggests, the focus is on 'Hermann Hesse Today'. The book investigates his current significance for a modern readership, taking account of his importance in the lecture theatre and classroom, the multi-facetted applicability of his moral, ethical and aesthetic concerns in the context of a fragmented world, and the continuing relevance of his writings. With the ever-increasing importance of modern preoccupations such as the ecological movement or the growth of the internet, a fresh look at Hesse's works is long overdue. The most obvious sign of this is the appearance of a definitive, historical-critical edition of his works (prose, poetry, and literary criticism), which will give access to much hitherto unpublished material and stimulate fresh debates on an author who ranks among the best-known and most influential figures of the twentieth century. This volume will be of interest to teachers of German in higher education and their students as well as researchers and the general readership that continues to take an interest in Hesse on both sides of the Atlantic.
