We investigate the ways in which a linear order on a finite set A can be consistently extended to a linear order on a set Pk(A) of multisets on A of fixed cardinality k. We show that for card(A) = 3 all linear orders on Pk(A) are additive and classify them by means of Farey fractions. For card(A) minor/equal 4 we show that there are non-additive consistent linear orders of Pk(A), we prove that they cannot be extended to a linear order of Pk(A) for K sufficiently large. We give the lower bounds for the number of additive linear orders in P2(A) and the total number of consistent linear orders in P2(A).

Throughout the centuries Aristotle's Poetics remained something of a mystery. What was the great philosopher trying to say about the nature of drama and storytelling? What did he mean by pity, fear and catharsis? In this book, Ari Hiltunen explains the mystery of the 'proper pleasure', which, according to Aristotle, is the goal of drama and can be brought about by using certain storytelling strategies. Hiltunen develops Aristotle's thesis to demonstrate how the world's best-loved fairy tales, Shakespeare's success, and empirical studies on the enjoyment of drama and brain physiology, all give support to the idea of a universal 'proper pleasure' through storytelling. Examining the key concepts and logic of Poetics, Hiltunen offers a unique insight to anyone who wants to know the secret of successful storytelling, both in the past and in today's multi-billion dollar entertainment industry

Using the semiotic theory of the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce as the principal influence, Johansen applies, in a highly erudite fashion, psychoanalysis, psychology, literary hermeneutics, literary history, Habermasian communication, and discourse theory to literature, and, in the process, redefines it. The text is divided into three major sections: an introductory exposition of the Peircean sign concept and the concept of discourse; an extensive discussion of various apexes of the semiotic pyramid; and a semiotic analysis of the hermeneutic problems of interpreting literature based on the theoretical work of Peirce, Habermas, and Gadamer. Such an ambitious project provides scholars not only with a pragmatic, multi-functional definition of literature but also with a thorough examination of the applicability of theory as it relates to analytic procedures

Although numerous books on Shakespeare are published every year, his language is a neglected topic. Yet an understanding of how his language works is fundamental to appreciating every aspect of his work. In this first comprehensive study of the grammar of Shakespeare's language since the Nineteenth Century a detailed analysis is given. Steering clear of linguistic jargon, it includes not only traditional features such as the make-up of clauses and differing parts of speech, but also language in use in various forms of discourse. A novel of one of the most treacherous river expeditions ever undertaken, THE LAST CANYON takes us deep into the heart of the elements, portraying in vivid detail the human quest to understand nature at all costs. In 1869 a one-armed Civil War hero named John Wesley Powell launched four boats on the Green River in Wyoming Territory, undertaking what would be the last major voyage of discovery in American history, through the country's only remaining terra incognita: the remote and barren course of the Colorado River. At the outset of his journey, Powell believed the inaccessible canyons of the Colorado were uninhabited. He was wrong. What he called "the great unknown" was in fact well known by a band of Paiute Indians who had lived on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for centuries. In John Vernon's hands, the story of Powell's voyage of exploration is two converging stories: that of Powell and his crew, and that of a family of Paiute making their own harrowing circuit of the Grand Canyon in an attempt to rescue a kidnapped girl. Told in alternating chapters, THE LAST CANYON deftly leads us into perilous geographical and emotional territory, culminating in Powell's struggle to finish his voyage with only two boats, not four, and five men out of the original nine. Powell's adventure is a story of triumph, hardship, bravery, and ultimate tragedy. THE LAST CANYON traces simultaneously a voyage of discovery and a chronicle of loss, an exploration of both unknown land and the unplumbed human spirit Front Cover -- Front Matter -- Praise forThe Last Canyon -- BOOKS BY JOHN VERNON -- Title -- Copyright -- Dedication -- AUTHOR'S NOTE -- Characters -- Part One May 23-June 15,1869 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- 6 -- Part Two -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- Part Three July 3-July 13,1869 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- Part Four -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- 6 -- Part Five July 14-July 19,1869 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- Part Six -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- Part Seven July 20-Angnst 3, 1869 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- Part Eight -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- Part Nine August 5-August 28, 1869 -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- 6 -- 7 -- Part Ten -- 1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- 6 -- Epilogue One Year Later September 1870 -- Back Matter -- Afterword -- About the Author -- ALSO BY JOHN VERNON -- Back Cover -- Spine

In the paper we propose an to evaluation of the environmental effects of consumption activities. The approach consists of two steps, namely (1) assignment of environmental effects to consumption activities, for which we propose to use the methods of (multidimensional) cost sharing, and (2) a comparison of the effects of different consumption activities using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), in which relative indices of pollution for the actitivies can be computed. An application is given using Danish national account data.

Examining the key concepts and logic of Poetics, Hiltunen offers a unique insight to anyone who wants to know the secret of successful storytelling, both in the past and in today's multi-billion dollar entertainment industry Front Cover -- Preliminaries -- Contents -- Aristotle in Hollywood -- Intellect's Studies in Scriptwriting -- Julian Friedmann - Series Editor -- Preface -- Chris Vogler -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Tears of Joy -- Overview -- 1. Donald Dale Walker advances biblical lexicography by carefully identifying and illustrating a semantic field present in 2 Corinthians 10–13, with particular focus on the key terms praytes and epeieikeia. For each of these words the author has also crafted detailed definitions. In addition, this study contributes to the recent interest in the investigation of Paul and politics by outlining the ideology of good rule and showing how it guided Paul's christological imagination. By attributing popular ideas of good rule to Christ, Paul forged a rhetoric that he could use to promote his agenda in Corinth. The rhetoric of populist appeal is also the key to understanding Paul's self-presentation in 2 Corinthians 10–13. By pressing the implications of good rule, this study breaks new ground in the analysis of Paul's rhetorical ethos, expanding the discussion beyond the limited instructions of ancient handbooks to reveal the apostle's modest populism (which incorporates his philosophical irony). Combining lexicographical insight, political theories, and rhetorical ethos creates a comprehensive reading strategy that integrates 2 Corinthians 10 -13.
