    This book is designed to enable non-native English speakers to write science research for publication in English. It can also be used by English speakers and is a practical, user-friendly book intended as a fast, do-it-yourself guide for those whose English language proficiency is above intermediate. The approach is based on material developed from teaching graduate students at Imperial College London and has been extensively piloted. The book guides the reader through the process of writing science research and will also help with writing a Master's or Doctoral thesis in English. Science writing is much easier than it looks because the structure and language are conventional. The aim of this book is to help the reader discover a template or model for science research writing and then to provide the grammar and vocabulary tools needed to operate that model. There are five units: Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion/Conclusion and Abstract. The reader develops a model for each section of the research article through sample texts and exercises; this is followed by a Grammar and Writing Skills section designed to respond to frequently-asked questions as well as a Vocabulary list including examples of how the words and phrases are to be used.     This paper proposes a new analytical framework with which to analyze the determinants of global CO2 emissions. It contributes to the existing literature by examining the determinants of CO2 emissions using a flexible functional form (transcendental logarithmic model), taking into account the presence of dynamic effects and allowing for heterogeneity in the sample of countries. The sample covers 121 countries and the period analyzed extends from 1975 through 2003. Two main results emerge. First, a static specification is rejected against a dynamic model. Second, the data also reject a general specification for all countries; hence slopeheterogeneity in the estimated coefficients has to be modeled. Conversely, the STIRPAT model is generally accepted for high-income countries, whereas for developing countries several interaction terms also play a role in explaining CO2 emissions. -- CO2 emissions ; developing countries ; panel data ; population growth ; urbanization

    We investigate the ways in which a linear order on a finite set A can be consistently extended to a linear order on a set Pk(A) of multisets on A of fixed cardinality k. We show that for card(A) = 3 all linear orders on Pk(A) are additive and classify them by means of Farey fractions. For card(A) minor/equal 4 we show that there are non-additive consistent linear orders of Pk(A), we prove that they cannot be extended to a linear order of Pk(A) for K sufficiently large. We give the lower bounds for the number of additive linear orders in P2(A) and the total number of consistent linear orders in P2(A).

    Aus der Einleitung: In der Magisterarbeit "Das Unbekannte als Ursprung der Faszination und des Grauens im Werk von Howard Phillips Lovecraft" beschäftigt sich der Verfasser mit einem Autoren, dessen Werke im angelsächsischen Sprachraum schon seit langem von den Kennern der Horrorliteratur geschätzt werden, in deutschsprachigen Ländern jedoch eher einer begrenzten Leserschaft bekannt sind. Das Grundthema der Angst in der Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wird von Lovecraft auf bemerkenswert ingeniöse und kreative Weise gestaltet: Im völligen Gegensatz zur Detektivhandlung, in der eine konkrete angstauslösende Situation durch intellektuelles Vermögen bewältigt wird, geht es bei Lovecraft um ein nicht zu bewätligendes Grauen, das literarisch kunstvoll aufs äußerste gesteigert wird. Der Verfasser interpretiert Lovecrafts Werke aus der Perspektive eben dieses intellektuell nicht faßbaren Grauens, dessen Ursprung er im Unbekannten sieht. Er beschreibt die Relevanz ästhetischer Traditionen wie auch der Psychoanalyse Freuds für die Vorstellungswelt Lovecrafts und analysiert dessen literarisch suggestiv evozierten Alptraumwelten. Die Studie, die verschiedene Aspekte des literarisch gestalteten Grauens im Werk Lovecrafts behandelt, führt konsequent zu einer Begründungn der nachweisbaren Betroffenheit der Leser: Sie entsteht aus "unserem Unbehagen vor dem unendlichen Universum und unserem Unbehagen vor der Tiefe des eigenen Selbst".     Paulus redet die Gemeinde als 'Brief Christi' an. Welche Funktion kommt solchen Metaphern zu? Den Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung bildet die detaillierte Erörterung von 2Kor 2,14-5,10, in der traditions- und religionsgeschichtliche sowie rhetorische und textlinguistische Analysen zur Anwendung kommen. Auch die vorbereitende grundlegende Bestimmung metaphorischer Sprache und verwandter Formen orientiert sich an paulinischen Texten und bezieht sprachanalytische Betrachtungen und die Erörterung gegenwärtiger Entwürfe zur Theorie der Metapher ein. Wie sich zeigt, ist Metaphorik in den Briefen des Paulus als eine auf Einverständnis angelegte Sprache des Möglichen unersetzlich.     Notker III, Labeo or Notker Teutonicus translated a number of Latin school texts by Boethius into Late Old German, including the Consolatio Philosophiae (CPh), and wrote explanatory commentaries on them, mostly in his mother-tongue. He used numerous sources for his translation and exegesis. The first of the parallel volumes 1A, 2A and 3A to the volumes of text 1, 2 and 3 (published in our series Altdeutsche Textbibliothek) provides the fruits of many years of research into the sources in the form of a commentary (Notker latinus) on Notker's version of the CPh. It is prefaced by a detailed index of abbreviations, siglia and literature followed by a comprehensive introduction presenting both the sources themselves and the principles underlying the commentary Notker III. Labeo oder der Deutsche, Lehrer im St. Galler Benediktinerstift († 1022), hat mehrere lateinische Schultexte, darunter auch die Consolatio Philosophiae (CPh) des Boethius ins Spätalthochdeutsche übersetzt und auch größtenteils in seiner Muttersprache erklärt (= Nb). Für seine Übertragung und Exegese hat er zahlreiche und verschiedenartige, vor allem lateinische Quellen benutzt. Mit diesem ersten der Parallelbände 1A, 2A und 3A zu den Nb-Textbänden 1, 2 und 3 unserer Ausgabe (ATB 94, 100, 101) lege ich interessierten Germanisten, Mediävisten und Liebhabern der CPh des Boethius die Resultate langjähriger Quellenforschungen in Gestalt eines Stellenkommentars (Notker latinus) zu Nb vor. Dieser Kommentar folgt wiederum dem Text von Nb, d.h. der Leithandschrift St. Gallen 825, nach Seiten und Zeilen. Vorher geht zunächst ein ausführliches Abkürzungs-, Siglen- und Literaturverzeichnis, dann folgt eine umfassende Einleitung, in der die Quellen und die Grundsätze dieses Kommentars vorgestellt und auch v.a. Entscheidungen zu Quellenfragen begründet und gelegentlich verteidigt werden. Der eigentliche Text des Kommentars wird wiederum auf 3 Bände (parallel zu den Textbänden von Buch I/II, Buch III und Buch IV/V der CPh verteilt. Am Ende des 3. Bandes findet eine Reihe von Nachträgen und Berichtigungen zu Nb ihren Platz. Ein Band, der Nachträge und Berichtigungen zu den anderen Bänden unseres Notker-Unternehmens sowie einige Register und Hinweise auf wichtige neuere Notker-Forschung und Forschungsliteratur enthalten wird, ist geplant. Eine der Hauptleistungen Notkers ist die Kunst, mit der er den oft schwierigen und spröden CPh-Text in sein Spätalthochdeutsch übertragen hat.

Mit diesem ersten der Parallelbände 1A, 2A und 3A zu den Nb-Textbänden 1, 2 und 3 unserer Ausgabe (ATB 94, 100, 101) lege ich interessierten Germanisten, Mediävisten und Liebhabern der CPh des Boethius die Resultate langjähriger Quellenforschungen in Gestalt eines Stellenkommentars (Notker latinus) zu Nb vor. Dieser Kommentar folgt wiederum dem Text von Nb, d.h. der Leithandschrift St. Gallen 825, nach Seiten und Zeilen.- Vorher geht zunächst ein ausführliches Abkürzungs-, Siglen- und Literaturverzeichnis, dann folgt eine umfassende Einleitung, in der die Quellen und die Grundsätze dieses Kommentars vorgestellt und auch v.a. Entscheidungen zu Quellenfragen begründet und gelegentlich verteidigt werden. Der eigentliche Text des Kommentars wird wiederum auf 3 Bände (parallel zu den Textbänden von Buch I/II, Buch III und Buch IV/V der CPh verteilt. Am Ende des 3. Bandes findet eine Reihe von Nachträgen und Berichtigungen zu Nb ihren Platz. Ein Band, der Nachträge und Berichtigungen zu den anderen Bänden unseres Notker-Unternehmens sowie einige Register und Hinweise auf wichtige neuere Notker-Forschung und Forschungsliteratur enthalten wird, ist geplant. Eine der Hauptleistungen Notkers ist die Kunst, mit der er den oft schwierigen und spröden CPh-Text in sein Spätalthochdeutsch übertragen hat.-

    From 1660 to c 1700, England set her eyes on Spain and on the seventeenth-century Spanish comedy of intrigue with an aim to import new plots and characters that might appeal to the Anglo-Saxon audience. As a consequence, Hispanic drama in translation enjoyed a period of relative popularity never to be repeated until the turn of the twenty-first century. By analysing a corpus of translated classical Spanish plays intended for performance, this book aims to show the strategies chosen by the translators concerned. Hence, many aspects present in the source texts are naturalized in order to meet the demands of the target culture, while others are kept to clarify the "Spanishness" of the text. This study draws significant conclusions on the validity of these mechanisms within the specific framework of Drama Translation Studies.
