    The property-rights theory assumes that trade is non-contractible ex-ante and focusses exclusively on the allocation of property-rights. We derive foundations for this focus on property-rights by identifying scenarios where only one of the simple ownership structures is optimal even though trade is contractible. In these scenarios it is optimal: (1) not to sign a trade contract; (2a) to sign a partially enforced trade contract; (2b) such a combination of asset ownership and a trade contract might even achieve the first-best. For the purpose of identifying the optimal simple ownership structure, trade contracts can be neclected in scenarios (2a) and (2b).

    We investigate the ways in which a linear order on a finite set A can be consistently extended to a linear order on a set Pk(A) of multisets on A of fixed cardinality k. We show that for card(A) = 3 all linear orders on Pk(A) are additive and classify them by means of Farey fractions. For card(A) minor/equal 4 we show that there are non-additive consistent linear orders of Pk(A), we prove that they cannot be extended to a linear order of Pk(A) for K sufficiently large. We give the lower bounds for the number of additive linear orders in P2(A) and the total number of consistent linear orders in P2(A).

    Aus der Einleitung: In der Magisterarbeit "Das Unbekannte als Ursprung der Faszination und des Grauens im Werk von Howard Phillips Lovecraft" beschäftigt sich der Verfasser mit einem Autoren, dessen Werke im angelsächsischen Sprachraum schon seit langem von den Kennern der Horrorliteratur geschätzt werden, in deutschsprachigen Ländern jedoch eher einer begrenzten Leserschaft bekannt sind. Das Grundthema der Angst in der Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wird von Lovecraft auf bemerkenswert ingeniöse und kreative Weise gestaltet: Im völligen Gegensatz zur Detektivhandlung, in der eine konkrete angstauslösende Situation durch intellektuelles Vermögen bewältigt wird, geht es bei Lovecraft um ein nicht zu bewätligendes Grauen, das literarisch kunstvoll aufs äußerste gesteigert wird. Der Verfasser interpretiert Lovecrafts Werke aus der Perspektive eben dieses intellektuell nicht faßbaren Grauens, dessen Ursprung er im Unbekannten sieht. Er beschreibt die Relevanz ästhetischer Traditionen wie auch der Psychoanalyse Freuds für die Vorstellungswelt Lovecrafts und analysiert dessen literarisch suggestiv evozierten Alptraumwelten. Den Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung bildet die detaillierte Erörterung von 2Kor 2,14-5,10, in der traditions- und religionsgeschichtliche sowie rhetorische und textlinguistische Analysen zur Anwendung kommen. Auch die vorbereitende grundlegende Bestimmung metaphorischer Sprache und verwandter Formen orientiert sich an paulinischen Texten und bezieht sprachanalytische Betrachtungen und die Erörterung gegenwärtiger Entwürfe zur Theorie der Metapher ein. Wie sich zeigt, ist Metaphorik in den Briefen des Paulus als eine auf Einverständnis angelegte Sprache des Möglichen unersetzlich.     The traditional trade theory predicts that trade in goods perfectly substitutes for direct movement of factors. This equivalence between goods trade and factor movements, however, depends crucially on assumptions about the production. This paper establishes necessary and sufficient conditions which describe the relationship between goods trade and capital mobility in a 2x2x2 trade model with internationally mobile capital. It identifies possible ways of incorporating capital mobility into a multi-regional, multi-sectoral Computable General Equilibrium framework. The consideration of capital mobility leads to other allocational and distributional outcomes of policy scenarios if there exists differences in production technologies across regions, trade impediments, or distortions in product or factor markets.

Throughout the centuries Aristotle's Poetics remained something of a mystery. What was the great philosopher trying to say about the nature of drama and storytelling? What did he mean by pity, fear and catharsis? In this book, Ari Hiltunen explains the mystery of the 'proper pleasure', which, according to Aristotle, is the goal of drama and can be brought about by using certain storytelling strategies. Hiltunen develops Aristotle's thesis to demonstrate how the world's best-loved fairy tales, Shakespeare's success, and empirical studies on the enjoyment of drama and brain physiology, all give support to the idea of a universal 'proper pleasure' through storytelling. Using the semiotic theory of the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce as the principal influence, Johansen applies, in a highly erudite fashion, psychoanalysis, psychology, literary hermeneutics, literary history, Habermasian communication, and discourse theory to literature, and, in the process, redefines it. The text is divided into three major sections: an introductory exposition of the Peircean sign concept and the concept of discourse; an extensive discussion of various apexes of the semiotic pyramid; and a semiotic analysis of the hermeneutic problems of interpreting literature based on the theoretical work of Peirce, Habermas, and Gadamer. Such an ambitious project provides scholars not only with a pragmatic, multi-functional definition of literature but also with a thorough examination of the applicability of theory as it relates to analytic procedures

    Recently there has been much theoretical and experimental work on learning in games. However, learning usually means learning about the strategic behavior of opponents rather than learning about the game as such. In contrast, here we report on an experiment designed to test whether players learn a) the relevant features of the payoff structure of a 2x2 game (e.g. the best reply structure) and b) whether they play according to equilibrium predictions regardless of how question a) is being answered. Question a) is being tested by asking subjects to guess the payoff structure of their opponents in a repeated encounter and rewarding subjects for correct answers.

Das macht den Band nicht nur lesbarer als Vergleichstitel wie "Preise und Stipendien" (ID 33/00), sondern vermittelt auch konkrete Vorstellungen von dem, was die Autoren bei Bewerbungsverfahren oder Wettbewerben erwartet.
