    A procedure for testing the signicance of a subset of explanatory variables in a nonparametric regression is proposed. Our test statistic uses the kernel method. Under the null hypothesis of no effect of the variables under test, we show that our test statistic has a nhp2/2 standard normal limiting distribution, where p2 is the dimension of the complete set of regressors. Our test is one-sided, consistent against all alternatives and detect local alternatives approaching the null at rate slower than n-1/2 h-p2/4.     We investigate the ways in which a linear order on a finite set A can be consistently extended to a linear order on a set Pk(A) of multisets on A of fixed cardinality k. We show that for card(A) = 3 all linear orders on Pk(A) are additive and classify them by means of Farey fractions. For card(A) minor/equal 4 we show that there are non-additive consistent linear orders of Pk(A), we prove that they cannot be extended to a linear order of Pk(A) for K sufficiently large. We give the lower bounds for the number of additive linear orders in P2(A) and the total number of consistent linear orders in P2(A).

    Aus der Einleitung: In der Magisterarbeit "Das Unbekannte als Ursprung der Faszination und des Grauens im Werk von Howard Phillips Lovecraft" beschäftigt sich der Verfasser mit einem Autoren, dessen Werke im angelsächsischen Sprachraum schon seit langem von den Kennern der Horrorliteratur geschätzt werden, in deutschsprachigen Ländern jedoch eher einer begrenzten Leserschaft bekannt sind. Das Grundthema der Angst in der Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wird von Lovecraft auf bemerkenswert ingeniöse und kreative Weise gestaltet: Im völligen Gegensatz zur Detektivhandlung, in der eine konkrete angstauslösende Situation durch intellektuelles Vermögen bewältigt wird, geht es bei Lovecraft um ein nicht zu bewätligendes Grauen, das literarisch kunstvoll aufs äußerste gesteigert wird. Der Verfasser interpretiert Lovecrafts Werke aus der Perspektive eben dieses intellektuell nicht faßbaren Grauens, dessen Ursprung er im Unbekannten sieht. Er beschreibt die Relevanz ästhetischer Traditionen wie auch der Psychoanalyse Freuds für die Vorstellungswelt Lovecrafts und analysiert dessen literarisch suggestiv evozierten Alptraumwelten. Den Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung bildet die detaillierte Erörterung von 2Kor 2,14-5,10, in der traditions- und religionsgeschichtliche sowie rhetorische und textlinguistische Analysen zur Anwendung kommen. Auch die vorbereitende grundlegende Bestimmung metaphorischer Sprache und verwandter Formen orientiert sich an paulinischen Texten und bezieht sprachanalytische Betrachtungen und die Erörterung gegenwärtiger Entwürfe zur Theorie der Metapher ein. Wie sich zeigt, ist Metaphorik in den Briefen des Paulus als eine auf Einverständnis angelegte Sprache des Möglichen unersetzlich. Throughout the centuries Aristotle's Poetics remained something of a mystery. What was the great philosopher trying to say about the nature of drama and storytelling? Using the semiotic theory of the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce as the principal influence, Johansen applies, in a highly erudite fashion, psychoanalysis, psychology, literary hermeneutics, literary history, Habermasian communication, and discourse theory to literature, and, in the process, redefines it. The text is divided into three major sections: an introductory exposition of the Peircean sign concept and the concept of discourse; an extensive discussion of various apexes of the semiotic pyramid; and a semiotic analysis of the hermeneutic problems of interpreting literature based on the theoretical work of Peirce, Habermas, and Gadamer. Such an ambitious project provides scholars not only with a pragmatic, multi-functional definition of literature but also with a thorough examination of the applicability of theory as it relates to analytic procedures

    As the millennium draws to an end, the threat posed by the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem is inducing vast private and public spending on its remediation. In this paper, we model the Y2K problem as an anticipated, permanent loss in output whose magnitude can be lessened by investing resources in advance. We embed the Y2K problem into a dynamic general equilibrium framework and show that our model replicates three observed characteristics of the dynamics triggered by the Y2K bug: (1) Precautionary investment: investment in solving the Y2K problem begins before the year 2000; (2) Investment delay: although economic agents have been aware of the Y2K problem since the 1960s, investment did not begin until recently; (3) Investment acceleration: as the new millennium approaches, the amount of resources allocated to solving the Y2K problem increases. Furthermore, the model predicts that output net of resources devoted to solving the Y2K problem need not decline in 2000.
