    Abstract ; Die Arbeit behandelt das methodische Problem der sprachspezifischen Registerdefinition anhand der althochdeutschen Evangelienharmonie Otfrids von Weißenburg. Im Originaltext enthaltene Überschriften werden funktional interpretiert und als hypothetische Register annotiert. Die Vorgehensweise folgt einem sprachinternen und -externen Ansatz. Im sprachinternen Teil erfolgt die korpusbasierte Ermittlung der Distribution ausgewählter registerkonstituierender Merkmale auf die einzelnen registerannotierten Texte, um zu überprüfen, ob sich einheitliche Registerzuordnungen auch sprachlich widerspiegeln. Im sprachexternen Teil erfolgt eine detaillierte Charakterisierung der einzelnen Kommunikationssituationen, die den hypothetischen Registern zugrundeliegen, sowie ein Abgleich mit den Distirbutions-Ergebnissen des sprachinternen Teils. Die Arbeit resümiert Probleme historischer Registerforschung am Beispiel des Althochdeutschen und endet mit einem methodischen Vorschlag zur quantitativen, korpusbasierten sprachspezifischen Registerdefinition des Althochdeutschen. ; Abstract ; The Thesis deals with the methodological issue of defining language specifical registers on the basis of the old high german diathessaron of Otfrid von Weißenburg. Original headings are interpreted functionally and form the initial point for a hypothetical register annotation of the texts. The corpus based quantitative approach is to be made lanuage internally and language externally. For the language internal part a subset of assumed register constituting language features is explored in terms of their distribution across the register annotated texts in order to make sure if the hypothetical register association is reflected linguistically. For the language external part the communication situations associatd with single hypothetical registers are characterized by detail and compared with the results of the language internal part. The thesis represents a résumé of problems historical register research has to deal with and provides a course of action for a corpusbased, quantitative language sepecific register definition of Old High German.

    Style, Identity and Literacy: English in Singapore is a qualitative study of the literacy practices of a group of Singaporean adolescents, relating their patterns of interaction – both inside and outside the classroom – to the different levels of social organization in Singaporean society (home, peer group and school). Combining field data gathered through a series of detailed interviews with available classroom observations, the study focuses on six adolescents from different ethnic and social backgrounds as they negotiate the learning of English against the backdrop of multilingual Singapore. This book provides social explanations for the difficulties and challenges these adolescents face by drawing on current developments in sociolinguistics, literacy studies, English language teaching and language policy

Addressing the themes of collaboration and transformation, the chapters critically examine how people work together to catalyse change in diverse global contexts, experiences and traditions. The authors suggest an epistemological and methodological turn to the study of translanguaging, which is particularly reflected in the collaborative, arts-based and action research/activist approaches followed in the chapters. The book will be of particular interest to scholars using ethnographic, critical and collaborative action and activist research approaches to the study of multilingualism in educational and creative arts contexts

    Much of Western Christianity continues to follow late medieval translation practices in translating yahweh and kurios. Since then, mainstream usage of “Lord” has slumped and evolved, with the little remaining usage often carrying a distinctly sinister connotation. The deep attachment to “Lord” within Christianity constitutes a second problem: although it creates methodological inconsistency, its historical super-sanctified status is likely the reason the terminology seems so impervious to change. Septuagint data highlight a further problem for sustaining “the LORD/Lord,” since doing so creates a grammatical mismatch with kurios (with regard to the definite article). These three problems call for reassessment of the ongoing suitability of “Lord” in English Bible translation and for a more context-driven methodology. This is defined and applied in a range of New Testament contexts for the purposes of demonstrating feasibility (rather than finality).

    Members of multilingual communities conceptualize language differently from the way monolinguals do. Most Bible agencies model monolingual approaches to engaging with the Bible. Some agencies emphasize gateway languages while others highlight vernacular languages. Many multilinguals prefer an unbounded, performative approach to languages that reflects their dynamic, hybridized identities; one term for this is translanguaging. Translanguagers make meaning by using words from their full linguistic repertoire. Using translanguaging theory and methodologies, Bible agencies can model Scripture engagement approaches that more naturally correspond to the language practices of many multilinguals.

Aussi, à cet état d'être ontologique "tumultueux" s'ajoute la confusion que le magnétisme du phénomène de mondialisation exerce de manière irrésistible sur le moi, en brouille avec le sujet francophone. Cette brouille s'insinue dans les moindres recoins de la conscience et de l'inconscient de l'être, les régit en moulant le quotidien et la pensée des sujets en question. Par conséquent, une discussion analytique des champs d'expression de l'imbroglio dans lequel habite l'ex-colonisé est toujours de mise, même après plus de six décennies d'"indépendance" et d'"autogouvernance" pour les dites "nouvelles nations".     Good Humor, Bad Taste is the first extensive sociological study of the relationship between humor and social background. Using a combination of interview materials, survey data, and historical materials, the book explores the relationship between humor and gender, age, regional background, and especially, humor and social class in the Netherlands. The final chapter focuses on national differences, exploring the differences between the American and the Dutch sense of humor, again using a combination of interview and survey materials. The starting point for this exploration of differences in sense of humor is one specific humorous genre: the joke. The joke is not a very prestigious genre; in the Netherlands even less so than in the US. It is precisely this lack of status that made it a good starting point for asking questions about humor and taste. Interviewees generally had very pronounced opinions about the genre, calling jokes "their favorite kind humor", but also "completely devoid of humor" and "a form of intellectual poverty". Good Humor, Bad Taste attempts to explain why jokes are good humor to some, bad taste to others. The focus on this one genre enables Good Humor, Bad Taste to have a very wide scope. The book not only covers the appreciation and evaluation of jokes by different social groups and in different cultures, and its relationship with wider humor styles. It also describes the genre itself: the history of the genre, its decline in status from the sixteenth century onward, and the way the topics and the tone of jokes have changed over the last fifty years of the twentieth century

    This book is about the doing and experiencing of diagnosis in everyday life. Diagnoses are revealed as interactive negotiations rather than as the assigning of diagnostic labels. The authors demonstrate, through detailed discourse analyses, how the diagnostic process depends on power and accountability as expressed through the talk of those engaged in the diagnostic process. The authors also show that diagnostic decisions are not only made by professional experts trained in the art and science of diagnosis, but they can also be made by anyone trying to figure out the nature of everyday problems. Finally, diagnostic reasoning is found to extend beyond typical diagnostic situations, occurring in unexpected places such as written letters of recommendation and talk about the nature of communication. Together, the chapters in this book demonstrate how diagnosis is a communication practice deeply rooted in our culture. The book is interdisciplinary and unusually broad in its focus. The authors come from different experiential scholarly backgrounds. Each of them takes a different look at the impact and nature of the diagnostic process. The diagnoses discussed include autism, Alzheimer's disease, speech and language disorders, and menopause. The focus is not only on the here and now of the diagnostic interaction, but also on how diagnoses and diagnostic processes change over time. The book can serve as an undergraduate or graduate text for courses offered in various disciplines, including communication, sociology, anthropology, communication disorders, audiology, linguistics, medicine, and disability studies

The authors suggest an epistemological and methodological turn to the study of translanguaging, which is particularly reflected in the collaborative, arts-based and action research/activist approaches followed in the chapters.     Die Arbeit behandelt das methodische Problem der sprachspezifischen Registerdefinition anhand der althochdeutschen Evangelienharmonie Otfrids von Weißenburg. Im Originaltext enthaltene Überschriften werden funktional interpretiert und als hypothetische Register annotiert. Die Vorgehensweise folgt einem sprachinternen und -externen Ansatz. Im sprachinternen Teil erfolgt die korpusbasierte Ermittlung der Distribution ausgewählter registerkonstituierender Merkmale auf die einzelnen registerannotierten Texte, um zu überprüfen, ob sich einheitliche Registerzuordnungen auch sprachlich widerspiegeln. Im sprachexternen Teil erfolgt eine detaillierte Charakterisierung der einzelnen Kommunikationssituationen, die den hypothetischen Registern zugrundeliegen, sowie ein Abgleich mit den Distirbutions-Ergebnissen des sprachinternen Teils. Die Arbeit resümiert Probleme historischer Registerforschung am Beispiel des Althochdeutschen und endet mit einem methodischen Vorschlag zur quantitativen, korpusbasierten sprachspezifischen Registerdefinition des Althochdeutschen. ; The Thesis deals with the methodological issue of defining language specifical registers on the basis of the old high german diathessaron of Otfrid von Weißenburg. Original headings are interpreted functionally and form the initial point for a hypothetical register annotation of the texts. The corpus based quantitative approach is to be made lanuage internally and language externally. For the language internal part a subset of assumed register constituting language features is explored in terms of their distribution across the register annotated texts in order to make sure if the hypothetical register association is reflected linguistically.     Hybrid languages formed as a result of language contacts are called pidgin languages in the linguistic literature, and the problem of their study is solved by contactology (or creolistics), which is an integral part of sociolinguistics. These are mainly English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Russian. They are widely spread in South America, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the northern and eastern regions of the Russian Federation. There are more than 50 Pidgin and Creole languages on Earth (Creole languages were formed due to the subsequent development of the Pidgin language). Creole languages are one of the most exciting fields of study not only from the point of view of linguistics but also from the point of view of history, cultural studies and other theoretical and applied sciences. This is because the number of people using Creole languages is millions. It is concluded from the article that pidgin has a strong influence on the world language landscape of users because not only languages but also their cultures come in contact.     Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.
