    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

Why, then, is public discourse often - and today more than ever, it would seem - so uncivil, even delusional? The reason, argues James Martin in this timely book, lies in the way speech works to organise desire. More than knowledge or rational interests, public speech services an unconscious urge for a lost enjoyment, stimulating an excess in subjectivity that moves us in body and mind.
    James Martin draws upon the work of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan as well as other Continental thinkers to set out a new approach to the analysis of rhetoric and answer the troubling question of whether civil discourse can ever hope to escape its obscene underside.

In ihrer Studie zeigt Stephanie Langer, dass dieses Konzept von einer genuin gegenwärtigen Rhetorik geprägt ist, indem sie die Kultur- und Mediengeschichte der Rechtsmedizin in Goethezeit, Moderne und Gegenwart nachvollzieht. Anhand ausgewählter literarischer Texte, die mit zeitgenössischen Fällen kontextualisiert werden, fragt sie nach den Medien und den Metaphern der Rechtsmedizin sowie nach dem Einsatzpunkt von Literatur in der Geschichte des toten Körpers. Hence, the corpse works as a text that is read by a physician/pathologist. This text contains all the details about the body’s life and death. In this study, Stephanie Langer shows that this concept is a specific form of expression rooted in the present. Proving her thesis, she discusses the cultural and media history of forensic medicine in the Goethe era, modernity and the present. By analysing both literary texts and contemporary cases, she explores the media and metaphors of forensic medicine as well as the relationship between literature and knowledge.

Die platonischen Motive der Selbstsorge und des guten Lebens, der Seelentherapie und Scham führen, wie die Untersuchung zeigt, auf eine selbstreflexive und auf das Ziel des Guten hin ausgerichtete Erkenntnisbewegung, die vermittelnd und heilend auf das Seele-Leib-Verhältnis wirkt. Die Studie konturiert die Dynamik seelischer Lernprozesse an spezifischen, auch bildlichen Vergegenwärtigungsformen und an Übergängen von Wissen. Platons Verankerung seines Bildungskonzepts in einer philosophischen Anthropologie und seine Transformation von Rhetorik und Poetik werden an der Eros-Figur im Phaidros manifest. Plato's concept of education raises the question of the conditions under which the epistemic quest and a change in the attitude of the soul actually correlate. The Platonic motifs of self-care and a good life, soul therapy and shame lead, as this study shows, to a self-reflective movement of knowledge, which has an orienting effect in view of the good and a mediating and ordering effect regarding the soul-body relationship. This work contours the dynamics of learning processes on specific, and figurative, forms of representation and on transitions of knowledge. Plato's anchoring of his educational concept in a philosophical anthropology and his transformation of rhetoric and poetics become manifest through the figure of Eros in the ‘Phaedrus’.

    As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of Calpurnius Flaccus this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. Contributions from an international group of leading scholars from the field of Roman Literature and Rhetoric will explore the question of how Roman Declamation functions as a literary genre. This volume investigates the literary technique and the generic conventions of declamatio in its social, pedagocial and ethical context to determine "the poetics" of Roman Declamation.     The work of Carlo Michelstaedter (1887–1910) was the first to analyze modernist philosophy in strict connection with social changes in mass society. Revealing how Michelstaedter was able to unveil the relations between pivotal early-modernist philosophies and social restructurings, The Wreckage of Philosophy examines the ongoing processes of "specialization," "rationalization," and "atomization." It points out how Michelstaedter connected the main theoretical expressions of modernism with the decisive social transformations of the early twentieth century, taking into consideration the key players of modernist philosophy, such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Henri Bergson, Ernst Mach, and William James. By following Michelstaedter’s analysis and strategies, The Wreckage of Philosophy focuses on several intertwined issues: the distinct philosophical positions within the modernist area; the connections between philosophy and modernist literature; the relations between intellectual positions and social upheavals; and the early-twentieth-century links among traditional philosophy, critique of language, and epistemology of technique

    Ciceros actio secunda in Verrem gehört zweifellos zu den bekanntesten Reden des großen römischen Politikers. Dennoch wurde sie bisher nur teilweise in moderner Kommentierung erschlossen. Diese Forschungslücke wird durch den hier vorgelegten Kommentar für De praetura Siciliensi geschlossen. Das zweite Buch der actio secunda ist so unterschiedlichen Themen wie Bestechungen oder Bereicherungen im Zusammenhang mit Zivil- und Kapitalprozessen, Kommunalämtern und Ehrenstatuen sowie der Kooperation mit den Steuerpächtern gewidmet. Der Kommentar berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse verschiedenster Forschungsdisziplinen, besonders der rechts- und althistorischen Forschung, arbeitet sie kritisch auf und macht sie für das Verständnis der Rede fruchtbar. Vor allem aber beleuchtet er diese Einzelrede erstmals vollständig aus philologischer Sicht, erörtert Sprache, Stil und Textkritik und zeigt vor allem die Raffinesse von Ciceros Redetaktik in dieser Rede und im Zusammenhang des Gesamtkorpus auf. Somit erhalten Leserinnen und Leser alle nötigen Informationen, um die unterschiedlichen Einzelaspekte der Rede zu verstehen und Ciceros oratorische Kunst zu würdigen

    The collection of the elder Seneca assembles "ations from scores of declaimers over a period spanning sixty years, from the Augustan Age through the early decades of the empire. A view is offered onto a literary scene, for this critical period of Roman letters, that is numerously populated, highly interactive, and less dominated by just a few canonical authors. Despite this potential, modern readings have often lumped declaimers together en masse and organizational principles basic to Seneca’s collection remain overlooked. This volume attempts to ‘hear’ the individual speech of declaimers by focusing on two speakers—Arellius Fuscus, rhetor to Ovid, and Papirius Fabianus, teacher of the younger Seneca. A key organizing principle, informing both the collection and the practice of declamation, was the ‘shared locus’—a short passage, defined by verbal and argumentative ingredients, that gained currency among declaimers. Study of the operation of the shared locus carries several advantages: (1) we appreciate distinctions between declaimers; (2) we recognize shared passages as a medium of communication; and (3) the shared locus emerges as a community resource, explaining deep-seated connections between declamation and literary works

Anhand ausgewählter literarischer Texte, die mit zeitgenössischen Fällen kontextualisiert werden, fragt sie nach den Medien und den Metaphern der Rechtsmedizin sowie nach dem Einsatzpunkt von Literatur in der Geschichte des toten Körpers. Proving her thesis, she discusses the cultural and media history of forensic medicine in the Goethe era, modernity and the present. Such statements could, however, be a rhetorical strategy, which belongs to dissimulatio artis ("concealment of (rhetorical) art"). Thus, while Paul seems to dissociate himself from rhetoric, he might in some way declare himself for rhetoric. This article gives a survey of the realisation of dissimulatio and of its functions in pagan literature of antiquity and deals with the question whether this rhetorical means is to be found in Paul's letters. Allerdings könnten diese Aussagen eine rhetorische Strategie sein, die zur dissimulatio artis ("Verheimlichung der (rhetorischen) Kunst") gehört. Dann wäre die paulinische Selbstdistanzierung von der Rhetorik in gewisser Weise ein Bekenntnis zu ihr. Dieser Beitrag bietet einen Überblick zu Vorkommen und Funktion der dissimulatio in der paganen Literatur der Antike und geht der Frage nach, ob sich dieses rhetorische Mittel bei Paulus findet.

    Tibetan polemical literature is especially known and enjoyed for its harsh language and offensive comparisons, which stand in marked contrast to the philosophical and doctrinal matters that works of the genre commonly discuss. Drawing from a detailed literary analysis of a particular polemical exchange between Ju Mipam (1846-1912) and Pari Rapsel (1840-1912), this article calls for a distinction between what might be called “rhetorical polemics” and “formal argumentation,” and argues that the former is used to exercise framing functions towards the latter, in both structural and conceptual terms. With regard to conceptual considerations, polemical comparisons play an important role. Through frequent allusions to a stereotypical divide of Buddhist experts in practice-oriented yogis and logic-oriented scholars, these discourses connect to a larger narrative framework about the correct or incorrect transmission of Buddhism on the Tibetan plateau, which individual agents use to characterize their opponents. In so doing, they contribute to the further solidification and promotion of the master narrative that this framework entails.

    Drawing on the arguments that hebel is the thesis of Ecclesiastes as well as Qoheleth’s rhetorical tool, this essay examines hebel’s connection with Qoheleth’s ambiguities and contradictions. Understanding hebel in terms of its basic meaning, that is, vapour, we argue that Qoheleth employs the image as his rhetorical strategy because of its opaque and fluctuating character. Being opaque, hebel is an ideal symbol for delineating phenomena which are ambiguous and hard to define. Coupled with its capacity for infinite change, the opacity allows hebel semantic inexhaustibility, making it a versatile device for describing the fluctuating nature of reality. As everything is opaque and in constant change, Qoheleth cannot offer advice in absolute terms and often ends up making contradictory statements.

    Despite numerous helpful efforts to ascertain Habakkuk’s historical context, few scholars ask how Habakkuk addresses itself to audiences across varying contexts. Employing Jeffrey Alexander’s concept of cultural trauma, this essay argues that Habakkuk’s portrait of victims and perpetrators facilitates a didactic representation of ancient Israel’s collective trauma beyond its original settings. Examining Habakkuk’s trans-historical nature, this study demonstrates that the book’s portrayal of the prophet and the Babylonians communicates cultural trauma in two ways: through the personalization of trauma and through the universalization of evil. The prophet’s direct speeches to YHWH personalize trauma by deepening the identification to victims of trauma from earlier generations, while representing the prophet as an archetype of victims. Simultaneously, Habakkuk’s moral and religious critiques of past perpetrators of trauma correspond to the cultural phenomenon of universalizing evil, which raises readers’ moral awareness and increases resistance to re-traumatization.

    Taking Stephen’s lengthy speech in Acts 7:2-53 as its case study, this paper considers the complex ways that narratives function politically, and especially how the author of Acts constructs the act of storytelling as a purposive persuasive strategy within the complex political landscape of the first-century Mediterranean world. Although some have interpreted Stephen’s speech in light of ancient rhetorical conventions, I contend that Stephen is not portrayed primarily as an elite classical orator; he is, fundamentally, a storyteller. This paper considers previous approaches to Stephen’s speech, and then analyzes the speech as an act of persuasive political narration. In the end, I argue that Stephen’s audience reacts so violently because of the particular kind of national narrative that Stephen tells about the people of Israel. Ausgehend vom Fallbeispiel der ausführlichen Rede des Stephanus in Apg 7,2-53 bearbeitet dieser Beitrag die komplexe Frage nach der politischen Funktion von Narrativen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird darauf gerichtet, wie der Autor der Apg das Erzählen als bewusste Überzeugungsstrategie innerhalb der vielschichtigen politischen Landschaft des Mittelmeerraumes im 1. Jh. n. Chr. nutzt. Obwohl Teile der Forschung die Stephanusrede im Lichte antiker Rhetorikkonventionen zu interpretieren versuchen, soll im Folgenden entfaltet werden, dass Stephanus weniger als herausragender klassischer Redner porträtiert wird denn als Erzähler einer Geschichte. Der vorliegende Artikel bedenkt bisherige Herangehensweisen an die Stephanusrede und analysiert diese sodann als politische Erzählstrategie mit dem Zweck zu überzeugen. Schließlich wird argumentiert, dass die Hörerschaft der Rede deswegen so gewaltsam reagiert, weil Stephanus ein spezifisches, national codiertes Narrativ über das Volk Israel entwirft.

    Cet article offre une analyse succincte des œuvres critiques de Ramus contre les deux grands rhéteurs de l’ancienne Rome, Cicéron et Quintilien, les Brutinae Quaestiones in Oratorem Ciceronis de 1547 et les Rhetoricae Distinctiones in Quintilianum de 1549. Ces œuvres se présentent comme des commentaires textuels, mais elles ne constituent pas une contribution substantielle à l’étude philologique des deux traités antiques. Elles semblent plutôt avoir pour but de montrer que, selon Ramus, la rhétorique ne concerne que l’élocution et l’action, et que la séparation stricte des arts du Trivium au niveau de la théorie est la seule méthode appropriée pour les enseigner. This article offers a brief analysis of the critical works of Ramus against the two great rhetoricians of ancient Rome, Cicero and Quintilian, the Brutinae Quaestiones in Oratorem Ciceronis of 1547 and the Rhetoricae Distinctiones in Quintilianum of 1549. These works look like textual commentaries, but they do not constitute a substantial contribution to the philological study of the two ancient treatises. Rather, they seem to be meant to argue that, for Ramus, rhetoric is only about Elocution and Delivery, and that the strict separation of the arts of the Trivium at the theoretical level is the only appropriate method for teaching them.
