    Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen, wie Kultur im Kontext von Religion übersetzt wird. Die literaturwissenschaftlichen, historischen und linguistischen Studien zeigen, wie unterschiedliche kulturelle Traditionen und Sprachen über Grenzen hinweg kommuniziert werden. Die Aufsätze widmen sich dem missionarischen Feld des frühen Mittelalters und kolonialisierten Kulturen von Lateinamerika, Indien, China, Afrika und Australien vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Des Weiteren werden literarische Werke in Hinsicht darauf untersucht, wie sie Kultur übertragen und übersetzen: zum einen ein christliches Theaterstück im islamischen Kontext und zum anderen ein haitianisch-nordamerikanischer Diaspora-Roman. Ein weiterer Beitrag diskutiert, wie das Konzept von Religion selbst im akademischen Bereich erklärt und übertragen wird. Durch die Anwendung unterschiedlicher methodischer Ansätze zeigen die Autoren innovativ auf, wie Kultur übersetzt werden kann.Mit Beiträgen vonGwilym Colenso, Fiona Darroch, Sabine Dedenbach-Salazar Sáenz, Pär Eliasson, Sarah Irving, Alison Jasper, David Moore, Brian Murdoch, Richard H. Roberts, Frauke Sachse, Roxana Sarion. This book addresses the translation of culture in the context of religion. The contributions, which analyse texts in literary, ethnohistorical and/or linguistic terms, show how different cultural traditions and languages are communicated across boundaries. They include studies of the missionary context of the Early Middle Ages and of colonially dominated cultures in Latin America, India, China, Africa and Australia, from the 16th to the early 20th century; and they analyse literary works with respect to how they transmit and translate culture: one a Christian play in the context of Islam, the other one a novel of the Haitian diaspora in the USA; another contribution presents the challenges of how the concept of religion itself is conveyed in contemporary scholarly contexts. By using different methodological tools, the authors show the manifold and innovative ways in which this field of the translation of culture can be approached. Die in den Werken von Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno, Metz u. a. aufgehobenen Einsichten werfen auf aktuelle Debatten reizvolle Schlaglichter und können Impulse geben. Looking back on his decades-long work as a university lecturer and researcher, the author of this study reappraises twelve books which were regarded as particularly worth reading during the early stages of his career and, in doing so, confirms their contemporary relevance. Although he adopts a very subjective and personal perspective throughout, he is still able to convey a sense of the atmosphere in liberal arts circles in the 1960s and 1970s. The opinions expressed in the works of Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno and Metz among others, which he had initially dismissed, provide enlightening insights into current debates.

    In discussions of the works of Donne, Milton, Marvell, and Bunyan, Early Modern Asceticism shows how conflicting approaches to asceticism animate depictions of sexuality, subjectivity, and embodiment in early modern literature and religion. The book challenges the perception that the Renaissance marks a decisive shift in attitudes towards the body, sex, and the self. In early modernity, self-respect was a Satanic impulse that had to be annihilated – the body was not celebrated, but beaten into subjection – and, feeling circumscribed by sexual desire, ascetics found relief in pain, solitude, and deformity.     The fact that adherents of most religions subscribe sincerely to many counter-empirical beliefs has been argued to pose a challenge to evolutionary explanations of religion, since natural selection is considered to have developed sophisticated cognitive mechanisms to enable prehistoric foragers to survive in harsh environments. I argue here that most counter-empirical beliefs held by members of most religions are optional most of the time, and were optional all of the time in prehistory. Beliefs held by foragers and other individuals in situations where survival may depend on them are not very counter-empirical compared to locally available alternatives. More generally, human beings are cognitively extravagant—that is, they are capable of entertaining beliefs about a large number of things other than their immediate physical environment, but it is only in modern environments that their cognitive extravagance typically becomes costly enough to pose a problem for evolutionary explanation. In a nutshell, counter-empirical beliefs are a by-product rather than a precondition of religious membership and practice, and were unlikely to have been adaptively costly in environments that were evolutionarily relevant for human beings.

    Agency detection is a central concept in the cognitive science of religion (CSR). Experimental studies, however, have so far failed to lend support to some of the most common predictions that follow from current theories on agency detection. In this article, I argue that predictive coding, a highly promising new framework for understanding perception and action, may solve pending theoretical inconsistencies in agency detection research, account for the puzzling experimental findings mentioned above, and provide hypotheses for future experimental testing. Predictive coding explains how the brain, unbeknownst to consciousness, engages in sophisticated Bayesian statistics in an effort to constantly predict the hidden causes of sensory input. My fundamental argument is that most false positives in agency detection can be seen as the result of top-down interference in a Bayesian system generating high prior probabilities in the face of unreliable stimuli, and that such a system can better account for the experimental evidence than previous accounts of a dedicated agency detection system. Finally, I argue that adopting predictive coding as a theoretical framework has radical implications for the effects of culture on the detection of supernatural agency and a range of other religious and spiritual perceptual phenomena.

We examine the community characteristics that are associated with higher testing rates. Our findings point to a number of key community determinants of people's willingness to volunteer. Convenience was an important factor. Beyond that, socioeconomic status and religiosity were also both positively related to greater testing.

    Recent theories of the Long Divergence between Middle Eastern and Western European economies focus on Middle Eastern (over-)reliance on religious legitimacy, use of slave soldiers, and persistence of restrictive proscriptions of religious (Islamic) law. These theories take as exogenous the cultural values that complement the prevailing institutions. As a result, they miss the role of cultural values in either supporting the persistence of or inducing change in the economic and institutional environment. In this paper, we address these issues by modeling the joint evolution of institutions and culture. In doing so, we place the various hypotheses of economic divergence into one, unifying framework. We highlight the role that cultural transmission plays in reinforcing institutional evolution toward either theocratic or secular states. We extend the model to shed light on political decentralization and technological change in the two regions.

    To teach one's students by drawing on information from one's field site is to bring two "homes" into contact with one another: the home of one's classroom with one's students and the home of a field site filled with friends and "fictive family". It means helping two different home communities translate and understand one another, bringing into sharper relief the challenges of translating that teaching - and fieldwork - perpetually entail. Creating an online pedagogical tool based on one's field site brings all of these issues into focus, as one also manages the spatial and temporal variances inherent in many digital humanities projects.

    Vodún has been described as indefinable, endlessly flexible, and borderless. In this paper, I develop an analytical framework for understanding global Vodún, thereby challenging claims that Vodún is, at its core, inexplicable. To accomplish this, I combine over a decade of ethnographic research in Bénin and Haiti with my status as an initiate of Haitian Vodou and my time as a diviner's apprentice in Bénin. Joining these three modalities, I explore the centrality of the forest as a key symbol in Vodún cosmology, how the forest's symbolic and ontological potency is maintained in Bénin and beyond, and how a forest-focused analysis of Vodún offers anthropologists new insights into how and why African Atlantic forest religions have been so successful globally. I lay out a new strategy for understanding Vodún that reframes the religion as an ontological product of forest cosmologies, and, in so doing, I argue that Vodún is best understood as a smaller part of a greater African Atlantic religious system that I call the "African Atlantic Forest Complex."

    In the mid 19th century, pre-colonial Korea under the Joseon dynasty was increasingly isolated and lagging behind in its economic development. Joseon Korea was forced to sign unequal treaties with foreign powers as a result of which Christian missionaries entered the country and contributed to the establishment of private schools. We show that areas with a larger presence of Christians have higher literacy rates in 1930, during the Japanese colonial period. We also show that a higher number of Protestants is associated with higher female literacy, consistent with a stronger emphasis on female education in Protestant denominations.

    Aus der Rückschau einer jahrzehntelangen Tätigkeit als akademischer Lehrer und Forscher unterzieht der Verfasser 12 Bücher, die in den Anfängen seines Denkwegs als besonders lesenswert galten, einer Relecture und vergewissert sich ihrer Aktualität. Obschon der Zugriff sehr persönlich gehalten ist, zeichnen sich so Konturen der geisteswissenschaftlichen Atmosphäre der 1960er und 1970er Jahre ab. Die in den Werken von Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno, Metz u. a. aufgehobenen Einsichten werfen auf aktuelle Debatten reizvolle Schlaglichter und können Impulse geben. Looking back on his decades-long work as a university lecturer and researcher, the author of this study reappraises twelve books which were regarded as particularly worth reading during the early stages of his career and, in doing so, confirms their contemporary relevance. Although he adopts a very subjective and personal perspective throughout, he is still able to convey a sense of the atmosphere in liberal arts circles in the 1960s and 1970s. The opinions expressed in the works of Buber, Gehlen, Mitscherlich, Adorno and Metz among others, which he had initially dismissed, provide enlightening insights into current debates.

    This article explores the potential impact and contribution of the Database of Religious History (DRH) project within the field of Cognitive Historiography. The DRH aims to bring together, in a systematic and open-access format, data on religious groups from across the globe and throughout history. By utilizing robust, open-source technologies and best-practice software principles, the DRH constitutes a novel and innovative approach to historical and cultural studies. As a contribution to the scientific study of both religion and history, the DRH offers data amenable to statistical analyses, thus providing tools for assessing diachronic cultural innovation and adaptation, the testing of grand narrative theories of religious change, and for enriching and revitalizing traditional fields such as comparative religions, history of religion(s), and anthropology of religion. In this article we explore the methods employed in collecting and digitizing historical data, identify our unit of analysis, outline the challenges of recruiting historians of various fields, and highlight the DRH’s methodological potential for both Religious Studies and Cognitive Historiography.

    “The Post-Secular City” is the first attempt to systematically map and assess the recent debate about secularization.“The Post-Secular City” examines the alleged shift from a “secular” to a “post-secular” dispensation from the perspective of the ongoing de-construction of the secularization “theorem” (as Hans Blumenberg called it). Accordingly, the new secularization debate is described as being polarized between the “de-constructors” and the “maintainers” of the standard thesis of secularization. This is the assumption underlying an ambitious effort to map the field, which consists of a long introduction where “secularization” is analyzed as a deeply problematic concept-of-process and of eight chapters in which several protagonists of the recent debate are discussed as crucial junctions of a multidisciplinary conversation.

    Religious adherence has been hard to study in part because it is hard to measure. We develop a new measure of religious adherence, which is granular in both time and space, using anonymized mobile phone transaction records. After validating the measure with traditional data, we show how it can shed light on the nature of religious adherence in Islamic societies. Exploiting random variation in climate, we find that as economic conditions in Afghanistan worsen, people become more religiously observant. The effects are most pronounced in areas where droughts have the biggest economic consequences, such as croplands without access to irrigation.

    This article sets forth a critical integrative review of the study of gender, sexuality, and religion. Treating religion as a cause, an effect, and an intermediary factor in relation to gender and sexuality, it draws on and synthesizes multiple theoretical approaches, including gender and queer lenses on religion, cultural analysis, and intersectionality. The article is structured around 10 big-picture questions about gender, sexuality, and religion and argues that gender and sexuality are a key symbolic boundary and cultural divide in religious and political life in the United States and around the world. It concludes with an agenda for future research.

    This study investigates the covid risk perceptions, information updating behavior related to the pandemic, use of protective measures, especially facemasks, and the demand for vaccines among university students in Malawi. In particular, the study focuses on how religion and belief in prayer as a protective device against covid-19 are affecting perceptions and behavior related to the pandemic. Our findings are from a stratified random sample of 764 students from 48 classes spread across different disciplines and study years for both undergraduate and postgraduate. One-tenth of the students believed that prayer was their most important measure to protect themselves against the pandemic. Students belonging to the Seventh Day Adventists (Baptist) and Pentecostal religions perceived the covid risk to be significantly lower than other students. Students that considered prayer to be the most important protective device also perceived the covid risk to be lower than others; and updated themselves significantly less frequently about the status of the pandemic than other students. Whereas students that perceived their personal health to be at risk updated themselves more frequently about the pandemic. The information updating frequency related to the pandemic and covid risk perceptions were positively correlated with facemask use, including facemask use in church. Those who believed in prayer as a protective device were using facemasks less frequently. Students belonging to the Seventh Day Adventists and Pentecostals were less likely to use facemasks in church. These two student groups represent close to 30% of our sample; and these two groups are less likely to have tried to get vaccinated or having gotten vaccinated. These two groups are therefore at higher risk themselves in future corona waves and may also, due to their beliefs and behavior enhance the spread of the virus. Our findings may be useful for targeting efforts to promote more corona safe behavior.
