    Tango entstand im späten 19. Jahrhundert als anfänglich vulgär konnotierte Musik- und Tanzform in den Metropolen des Río-de-la-Plata-Raumes (Argentinien/Uruguay). Durch seine früh einsetzende Mediatisierung (Tonträger, Radio, Film) konnte er sich in Europa etablieren, bevor er in den 1930er bis 1950er Jahren in seinem Ursprungsgebiet ein Massenpublikum fand. Durch das Revival in Europa in den 1980er Jahren wurde auch im Río-de-la-Plata-Raum die Tangobegeisterung neu entfacht. Tango erscheint als Medienprodukt, das über soziale Schichten sowie regionale und nationale Grenzen hinweg konsumiert werden kann. Nicht nur Tanz und Musik, sondern auch die Liedtexte, eine bestimmte Bildsprache sowie ein spezifischer Habitus machen Tango zu einem popkulturellen Phänomen, dessen historische, soziale und mediale Dimensionen in den 13 Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes untersucht werden. Initially conceived as a form of music and dance with vulgar connotations, tango emerged in the large cities located in the River Plate region in Argentina and Uruguay in the late 19th century. Brought to the public’s attention via early forms of the media (records, the radio and film), tango established itself in Europe before finding a mass audience in the region in which it originated from the 1930s to the 1950s. Tango’s revival in Europe in the 1980s also reignited its popularity in the River Plate region. Tango is a media product that pervades all social strata and transcends both regional and national borders. It’s not only the music and the dance itself that have turned tango into a pop-cultural phenomenon, but its music’s lyrics, the visual imagery it creates and its specific character. This book examines tango’s historical, social and media dimensions in 13 contributions.

    Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

    This article offers a qualitative and phenomenological case study of the piñata and its transformations as transcultural object, with a focus of its representations in Mexico, web spaces and social media. The piñata can be analyzed as a transcultural object within its different contexts and forms of representation: as craftwork, religious-popular practice during the posadas, central object of a short film, art gallery on Facebook and lootbox in Fortnite. We can observe, that the transformation processes of all the different forms of the piñata are direct results from the media contexts and cultural practices surrounding them. Therefore, we can testify a certain type of globalization and monetization for the piñata, as well as open practices as localized object and crafts. ; El presente artículo trata de analizar de manera cualitativa y fenomenológica la piñata y sus transformaciones como objeto transcultural desde una perspectiva transmedial en un estudio ejemplar con enfoque en México, en los espacios de la web y las plataformas sociales. Se propone analizar la piñata como objeto transcultural en sus contextos y formas de representaciones distintas: como artesanía, práctica religiosa-popular durante las posadas, objeto central de un cortometraje, galería de arte en Facebook y lootbox en Fortnite. Se puede observar que los procesos de transformación de las formas de representación de la piñata son resultado directo de los ámbitos mediáticos y las prácticas culturales en las que se insertan. Por lo tanto, se puede atestiguar cierto tipo de globalización y mercantilización de la piñata, tal como la apertura a prácticas abiertas como objeto localizado y artesanía.

    A profound intellectual engagement with Afrofuturism and the philosophical questions of space and time Queer Times, Black Futures considers the promises and pitfalls of imagination, technology, futurity, and liberation as they have persisted in and through racial capitalism. Kara Keeling explores how the speculative fictions of cinema, music, and literature that center black existence provide scenarios wherein we might imagine alternative worlds, queer and otherwise. In doing so, Keeling offers a sustained meditation on contemporary investments in futurity, speculation, and technology, paying particular attention to their significance to queer and black freedom.Keeling reads selected works, such as Sun Ra’s 1972 film Space is the Place and the 2005 film The Aggressives, to juxtapose the Afrofuturist tradition of speculative imagination with the similar "speculations" of corporate and financial institutions. In connecting a queer, cinematic reordering of time with the new possibilities technology offers, Keeling thinks with and through a vibrant conception of the imagination as a gateway to queer times and black futures, and the previously unimagined spaces that they can conjure

    This study examines attribution of supernatural agency in 17 Swedish, high functioning young adults on the autism spectrum, who describe sensing presence, feeling touch, and seeing visions without input of somatosensory stimuli. These participants report many more such incidents than the matched, non-autistic group participants, and current research suggests that unusual somatosensory experiences are prevalent in the autistic population. Attribution of invisible agency is understood as a sense-making coping strategy, and it is argued that esoteric content in fantasy literature, movies and computer games explain why these young adults prefer to attribute agency to ghosts, spirits and demons, rather than god(s). The study thereby extends and challenges the study of autism and religiosity by exploring the intersection between autistic embodiment and encultured cognition.

    Tango entstand im späten 19. Jahrhundert als anfänglich vulgär konnotierte Musik- und Tanzform in den Metropolen des Río-de-la-Plata-Raumes (Argentinien/Uruguay). Durch seine früh einsetzende Mediatisierung (Tonträger, Radio, Film) konnte er sich in Europa etablieren, bevor er in den 1930er bis 1950er Jahren in seinem Ursprungsgebiet ein Massenpublikum fand. Durch das Revival in Europa in den 1980er Jahren wurde auch im Río-de-la-Plata-Raum die Tangobegeisterung neu entfacht. Tango erscheint als Medienprodukt, das über soziale Schichten sowie regionale und nationale Grenzen hinweg konsumiert werden kann. Nicht nur Tanz und Musik, sondern auch die Liedtexte, eine bestimmte Bildsprache sowie ein spezifischer Habitus machen Tango zu einem popkulturellen Phänomen, dessen historische, soziale und mediale Dimensionen in den 13 Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes untersucht werden. Initially conceived as a form of music and dance with vulgar connotations, tango emerged in the large cities located in the River Plate region in Argentina and Uruguay in the late 19th century. Brought to the public’s attention via early forms of the media (records, the radio and film), tango established itself in Europe before finding a mass audience in the region in which it originated from the 1930s to the 1950s. Tango’s revival in Europe in the 1980s also reignited its popularity in the River Plate region. Tango is a media product that pervades all social strata and transcends both regional and national borders. It’s not only the music and the dance itself that have turned tango into a pop-cultural phenomenon, but its music’s lyrics, the visual imagery it creates and its specific character. This book examines tango’s historical, social and media dimensions in 13 contributions.

This first comprehensive study of heroism and the heroic in “Doctor Who” (1963-2020) uses one of Britain’s longest-running TV series to access the changing state of the nation and its collective emotions since the early Sixties. The analysis of two decade-spanning processes of heroization (of the Doctor and female characters in the series) is combined with close readings of individual episodes that feature heroic moments in crystallized narratives of past and future.     Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

    Like all fundamental categories, work becomes ever more complex as we examine it more closely. The terms “work,” “labor,” “job,” “employment,” “occupation,” “profession,” “vocation,” “task,” “toil,” “effort,” “pursuit,” and “calling” form a dense web of overlapping and contrasting meanings. Moreover, the analysis of work must contend with how histories of class struggle, gendered and sexual divisions of labor, racial hierarchies, and citizenship regimes have determined who counts as a worker and qualifies for the rights, protections, and social respect thereof. And yet waged work is only the tip of an enormous iceberg that feminist theorists call “socially reproductive labor”—the gendered, mostly unpaid, and hidden work of caring for, feeding, nursing, and teaching the next generation of workers. This collection of essays explores the richness of work as a linguistic, cultural, and historical concept and the conjunctures that are changing work and its worlds.

Through a rigorous quantitative/qualitative discourse analysis - never before undertaken in relation to online fanfiction and its reception - 'Fanfiction and the Author' demonstrates how fanfic relating to Sherlock, Game of Thrones and Supernatural works to change and consolidate the discourses of masculinity, authority, and authorship created through these TV texts. As a result, this book innovatively explores how fanfic - the unauthorized creative (re)writing of media fans - alters the discursive formations of popular culture. This, the first large-scale study of fanfic to employ an approach attentive to the sites, receptions, and fan rejections of fanfic, demonstrates that fanfic often legitimates itself through traditional notions of authorship. However, in its explicit discussion and deconstruction of the author figure, fan culture is also beginning to contest those traditional discourses of authority upon which it has depended, paving the way for new kinds of writing that challenge the authority of media professionals

    Johann Baptist Cramer (1771–1858), Spross einer kurpfälzischen Musikerfamilie, ist heute höchstens noch durch seine Klavieretüden bekannt; zu Lebzeiten war er eine öffentliche Gestalt der europäischen Musikwelt, und zwar nicht nur als Pianist, Komponist und Lehrer, sondern auch als Unternehmer im Klavierbau und Verlagswesen. Durch diese Mehrfachfunktion, wie sie viele ›Pianistes Compositeurs‹ seiner Zeit ausfüllten, kam es zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen verschiedenen Bereichen des Musiklebens, zwischen instrumentaler Technologie, menschlicher Fingertechnik und musikalischer Ästhetik, zwischen Unternehmertum, Kanonbildung und Populärkultur. Entgegen dieser gängigen Lesart der Kulturindustriethese interpretiert Roger Behrens den Begriff als zentrale Kategorie einer kritischen Theorie der Gesellschaft. Die Kritik der Kulturindustrie bewahrt ihre Aktualität angesichts der neueren Entwicklung - Stichwort "Popkultur"--Als radikale Diagnose einer von der ökonomischen Verwertungslogik bestimmten Gesellschaft. Die kritische Theorie der Kulturindustrie konstatiert, dass von der Kulturindustrie durchaus mehr Befriedigung und Glück erwartet werden darf, als heute dem Publikum vermittelt wird. Das Publikum ist keineswegs zu dumm, um sich mit den angebotenen Kulturwaren zu bescheiden, sondern verfügt über genügend Phantasie, sich eine bessere Welt vorzustellen, die freilich mehr menschliches Glück garantiert als die durch das abstrakte Profitmotiv vermittelte Ideologie der Kulturindustrie. - Nicht die Kultur gilt es abzuschaffen, sondern die Gesellschaft selbst muss verändert werden, um das Recht der Menschen auf gute Unterhaltung zu gewährleisten

Sie kennzeichnet, was durch das Abenteuer zur Darstellung gelangt: Zwischen den gut befestigten Überwachungsanlagen der Terra firma, von denen aus sich die Welt zur Wirklichkeit ordnen lässt, und dem offenen Horizont einer möglichen Terra incognita, der sich von dort aus auftut, lauern Mischwesen und Outcasts, Turbulenzen und Strudel. Vorstellungen von Ordnung und Unordnung drehen sich hier um-, gegen- und ineinander und entfalten so die Sogwirkung des Außerordentlichen. Der Sammelband betrachtet diese Konstellation aus drei Blickwinkeln: Er analysiert Raumordnungen, soziale und rezeptionspolitische Ordnungen in ihrem Verhältnis zum Außerordentlichen des Abenteuers. Dadurch werden historische Transformationen von Ordnungs- und Abenteuerkonzepten sichtbar.

    This book argues that time travel fiction is a narrative "laboratory," a setting for thought experiments in which essential theoretical questions about storytelling—and, by extension, about the philosophy of temporality, history, and subjectivity—are represented in the form of literal devices and plots.Drawing on physics, philosophy, narrative theory, psychoanalysis, and film theory, the book links innovations in time travel fiction to specific shifts in the popularization of science, from evolutionary biology in the late 1800s, through relativity and quantum physics in the mid–20th century, to more recent "multiverse" cosmologies. Wittenberg shows how increasing awareness of new scientific models leads to surprising innovations in the literary "time machine," which evolves from a "vehicle" used chiefly for sociopolitical commentary into a psychological and narratological device capable of exploring with great sophistication the temporal structure and significance of subjects, viewpoints, and historical events.The book covers work by well-known time travel writers such as H. G. Wells, Edward Bellamy, Robert Heinlein, Samuel Delany, and Harlan Ellison, as well as pulp fiction writers of the 1920s through the 1940s, popular and avant-garde postwar science fiction, television shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek," andcurrent cinema. Literature, film, and TV are read alongside theoretical work ranging from Einstein, Schrödinger, and Stephen Hawking to Gérard Genette, David Lewis, and Gilles Deleuze. Wittenberg argues that even the most mainstream audiences of popular time travel fiction and cinema are vigorously engaged with many of the same questions about temporality, identity, and history that concern literary theorists, media and film scholars, and philosophers

    Why has the zombie become such a pervasive figure in twenty-first-century popular culture? John Vervaeke, Christopher Mastropietro and Filip Miscevic seek to answer this question by arguing that particular aspects of the zombie, common to a variety of media forms, reflect a crisis in modern Western culture. The authors examine the essential features of the zombie, including mindlessness, ugliness and homelessness, and argue that these reflect the outlook of the contemporary West and its attendant zeitgeists of anxiety, alienation, disconnection and disenfranchisement. They trace the relationship between zombies and the theme of secular apocalypse, demonstrating that the zombie draws its power from being a perversion of the Christian mythos of death and resurrection. Symbolic of a lost Christian worldview, the zombie represents a world that can no longer explain itself, nor provide us with instructions for how to live within it. The concept of "domicide" or the destruction of home is developed to describe the modern crisis of meaning that the zombie both represents and reflects. This is illustrated using case studies including the relocation of the Anishinaabe of the Grassy Narrows First Nation, and the upheaval of population displacement in the Hellenistic period. Finally, the authors invoke and reformulate symbols of the four horseman of the apocalypse as rhetorical analogues to frame those aspects of contemporary collapse that elucidate the horror of the zombie. Zombies in Western Culture: A Twenty-First Century Crisis is required reading for anyone interested in the phenomenon of zombies in contemporary culture. It will also be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience including students and scholars of culture studies, semiotics, philosophy, religious studies, eschatology, anthropology, Jungian studies, and sociology.

    This book argues that time travel fiction is a narrative "laboratory," a setting for thought experiments in which essential theoretical questions about storytelling—and, by extension, about the philosophy of temporality, history, and subjectivity—are represented in the form of literal devices and plots.Drawing on physics, philosophy, narrative theory, psychoanalysis, and film theory, the book links innovations in time travel fiction to specific shifts in the popularization of science, from evolutionary biology in the late 1800s, through relativity and quantum physics in the mid–20th century, to more recent "multiverse" cosmologies. Wittenberg shows how increasing awareness of new scientific models leads to surprising innovations in the literary "time machine," which evolves from a "vehicle" used chiefly for sociopolitical commentary into a psychological and narratological device capable of exploring with great sophistication the temporal structure and significance of subjects, viewpoints, and historical events.The book covers work by well-known time travel writers such as H. G. Wells, Edward Bellamy, Robert Heinlein, Samuel Delany, and Harlan Ellison, as well as pulp fiction writers of the 1920s through the 1940s, popular and avant-garde postwar science fiction, television shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek," andcurrent cinema. Literature, film, and TV are read alongside theoretical work ranging from Einstein, Schrödinger, and Stephen Hawking to Gérard Genette, David Lewis, and Gilles Deleuze. Wittenberg argues that even the most mainstream audiences of popular time travel fiction and cinema are vigorously engaged with many of the same questions about temporality, identity, and history that concern literary theorists, media and film scholars, and philosophers

Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus
