Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable "stuff," has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity.Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of "character" in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body

Hermeneutical research is an elementary method in religious education. At the same time, however, there are only a few methodological explanations for it. The paper outlines fundamental aspects of a hermeneutical approach and illustrates them by focussing the develop-ment of concepts in the didactics of religion. Among other things, a review of main results of hermeneutical concept development is presented, and the underlying methodological ap-proach is characterized. In this way it can be demonstrated that a hermeneutical concept development represents an established research format with potential.

Antisemitism has emerged as a key concept of the Hungarian sociopolitical vocabulary during the last decades when it has been chiefly employed by its critics. The paper lists four main reasons that are in turn historical, transnational, intellectual and political behind the much increased importance of this concept. Through the methods of conceptual history, it subsequently aims to show that the meaning of antisemitism has undergone significant changes since the fall of the communist regime. The three most important semantic shifts identified are its moralization, extension and politicization. While moralization is meant to indicate the complete unacceptability of antisemitism, its extended conception tends to depict it as a most complex and dangerous form of prejudice. Both the moralized and extended conception of antisemitism was also politically employed by Hungarian left liberals to contest the legitimacy of the conservative rightist forces. The latter have in turn aimed to redefine antisemitism as a political as much as a social or cultural issue, thereby contributing to its further politicization. More recent years have also brought about the visible revival of antisemitism – in spite of the concept having been recurrently and critically used in public discussions of recent decades.

; Linguists have contributed significantly to intercultural research delivering precise and promising operationalizations of culture for decades. This paper provides a literature review on linguistic research on intercultural communication for the years from 2004 to 2011. This review shows that linguists successively have started to retreat from precisely looking at how aspects of culture may influence social interaction. This retreat may be caused by the critical debates on US-based cultural anthropology constructing culture as its own object of research at the turn of the millennium. Meanwhile, cultural anthropologists as well as authors from neighbouring disciplines have developed concepts to ...

Research in Social Science is usually based on survey data where individual research questions relate to observable concepts (variables). However, due to a lack of standards for data citations a reliable identification of the variables used is often difficult. In this paper, we present a work-in-progress study that seeks to provide a solution to the variable detection task based on supervised machine learning algorithms, using a linguistic analysis pipeline to extract a rich feature set, including terminological concepts and similarity metric scores. Further, we present preliminary results on a small dataset that has been specifically designed for this task, yielding modest improvements over the baseline.

Jahrhundert n. Chr.).' (Autorenreferat) ; 'This study analyses the several expressions used to denominate earthquakes in the Roman period. It is a new inquiry into the research on the Latin language and it is characterized by the comparison of different sources. The first part shows the several substantives and verbs used for earthquake in Latin literary sources. In this way it is possible to realize that Latin authors used various terms during the different moments of the Roman age. The second part of the study provides a catalogue of all Latin inscriptions that directly depict an earthquake. Most texts speak about reconstructions of buildings made by Emperors, state and municipal officials, local notables and which were destroyed by an earthquake. In this case it is also possible to ...

; As the epitome of the urban, the city type "metropolis" has been experiencing an ongoing boom for two to three decades. With a quantitative text analysis of the leading German national print media, the patterns of linguistic use for the term metropolis and for the two largest cities Berlin and Hamburg are highlighted. They are interpreted as attributions of meaning in mass media communication processes and generate a semantic field whose analysis allows declarations to be made about size, function and imagery of a metropolis over time.

This article explores the conceptual analysis in literary discourse using the example of the novel "Day of Execution" by Azerbaijani writer Y. Samedoglu. The author proposes a comprehensive approach to concept analysis, including examining the nominative field, semantic analysis, and intertextual relationships. Various techniques and elements such as embedded texts, temporal parallels, intertextuality, irony, and allegory are examined, which help reveal the concept's meaning and organisation in the novel. Additionally, the article emphasises the importance of cognitive-semantic analysis and the study of intertextual relationships in literary discourse. The research contributes to a better understanding of the conceptual worldview in the novel "Day of Execution" and its connection to linguistic means and structures. This article interests linguists, literary scholars, and anyone interested in cognitive analysis and academic discourse. Various concepts are verbalized and reflected in language units. These language units exist in different structures. Ideas are mainly realized in the form of fixed expressions. Fixed expressions, in turn, possess other structures. In this linguistic landscape of the world, selected words have their unique and distinct place. The concepts of "friend" and "enemy", while fundamentally within the domain of cognitive linguistics, are primarily linguistic units. Several linguistic teams converge around a particular sign. Their similarity to each other unites them within a paradigmatic framework. Characters with single paradigms enter into associative relations with each other. There exist universal paradigms in language, the universality of which does not depend on individual specific languages and their specific characteristics. The concepts of "friend" and "enemy" are included in these universal paradigms, which are present in all languages.Paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations create a system. This situation is based on the logic of natural processes. For instance, one of the factors that led to the development of the language system is the constant and reciprocal manifestation of two opposing approaches, two regularities. The first of such images are concepts that form opposite poles. Several aspects can be distinguished within linguistics's foreign and local cognitive direction framework.

Doch was besagt diese These?

(Autorenreferat) ; 'Conceiving of individual development as of change occurring in the patterns of a subject's relations to the world and to his or herself and brought about by coping with novel challenges, the paper addresses the issue of how - in spite of the relative stability of power structures and notwithstanding the subtle modes of action of symbolic violence as described by Bourdieu - such processes of individual development are at all possible. Özdamar's novel is interpreted, on the one hand, as a vivid description of the mechanisms of symbolic violence operating at the workplace, in the political public and in the family and, on the other hand, as a successful enactment of subversive forms of challenging this violence, which find their support in the communicational sites of a kind of counter public and in the defamiliarizing use of hegemonic speech patterns.' (Autorenreferat) ; 'In this article, I explore the question of how to determine the relationship between the concept of family and theories of justice. I present issues of concern and the position the concept of family can have within a theory of justice. I analyze the concept of family in two prominent theories of justice (Rawl's 'A Theory of Justice' and Walzer's 'Spheres of Justice'). The analysis shows that there is some doubt regarding the compatibility of justice with family structure, although both theories assign an important role to families. I hereby demonstrate that the concept of family can and should play an important role in the conceptualization of social justice. After that, I try to show that the concept of family can also be reconsidered by using alternative scenarios ('utopias') that show a destruction of our understanding of family. I draw on utopias by Huxley ('Brave New World') and Orwell ('1984'). In conclusion I discuss how an ethics of community can close the gap between the concepts of family ...

(Autorenreferat) ; 'The text analyzes the conceptual history of euthanasia in the popular and scientific discourse. It focus on two short periods of changes, before the outbreak of World War I and during the early 1970s, when new terms were created and new meanings became accepted. These upheavals can be understood as reactions to changing views and needs. And vice versa new words and meanings modify the perception and the interpretation of the signified. The main focus of the text is the analysis of these interactions with their specific dynamics on a field which is narrowly connected with individual fears.' (author's abstract)
