    This Forum includes seven articles by scholars working in the field of Moravian Studies reflecting on their work with “Digital Moravians,” either in their scholarship or in the classroom. The articles cover everything from the nature the archivist’s work in a digital age (Paul Peucker), to the painstaking work of georectification and historic sound reproduction (Mark Sciuchetti and Sarah Eyerly, respectively), to new forms of scholarly editions of archival materials as open and public facing scholarship announced on social media (Martin Prell), to the use of digital manuscripts to invite history undergraduates behind the curtain to actively participate in the work of the historian (Jared Burkholder). Additional articles consider the challenges of digital humanities work for the growing ranks of precarious scholars who lack institutional support for the types of collaborative work required (Gregory Specter) and the innovative technical digital humanities scholarship possible when a scholar is backed by an institution committed to supporting and showcasing digital scholarship and pedagogy (Katherine Faull at Bucknell University).     This special issue offers a capacious sample of scholarship on religion and material texts in the Americas, and seeks to reveal the potential of material-texts approaches for the study of religion. It features articles by four early-career Americanists (Emily Floyd, Alexandra Kaloyanides, Roxanne Korpan, and Martin Tsang) whose research bridges both areas. Because material texts research typically relies on archives for its source base, I asked the authors of the “In Conversation” essays (Matthew P. Brown, Steffi Dippold, Kyle Roberts, and Judith Weisenfeld) to discuss what they see as the challenges and opportunities confronting archival research in material texts today. While the collected eight pieces reflect the diversity and originality of their authors, they make several collective contributions. They demonstrate how material texts mediate power, especially amid encounters involving state, colonial, and missionary actors; exemplify the strength of interpretations informed by hands-on encounters with material texts; display a critical alertness to the structures through which material texts have been collected and made legible to researchers today; and show what we stand to gain from collaborative scholarship

    Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in the late 1980s, intersectionality makes the case that dimensions of identity, such as gender and race, cannot be understood in isolation from each other because they work together to shape lived experience. As digital humanities has expanded in scope and content, questions of how to negotiate the overlapping influences of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, and other dimensions that shape data, archives, and methodologies have come to the fore. Taking up these concerns, the authors in this volume explore their effects on the methodological, political, and ethical practices of digital humanities. Essays examine intersectionality from a range of positions: the influence of overlapping identities on scholars within the digital humanities community; how the fields in which they work are subject to competing tensions created by intersecting power structures within digital humanities and academia; and the methodological possibilities and scholarly potential for intersectionality as a framing theory in digital humanities scholarship

    This book sprang from three handwritten lines by Ivan Bunin, Russia's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Found inside a first edition of Mitya's Love, they led to the discovery of one of the largest corpora of letters written to Ivan and Vera Bunin by two people whose lives and legacy had been, until now, forgotten. These letters are now in the Russian Archive in Leeds (RAL), and are published here for the first time. The book also focuses on memory and history in its purest form, as narrated by witnesses who lived through the most tragic century in Russian history. Their stories involve Grand Dukes, Russian literary and political giants, as well as one of the architects of the Gulag, and show how these lives intertwined. It also sheds new light on the life and works of Chekhov, Gorky, A. Tolstoy, and Bunin

    How do museums and cinema shape the image of the Communist past in today's Central and Eastern Europe? This volume is the first systematic analysis of how visual techniques are used to understand and put into context the former regimes. After history "ended" in the Eastern Bloc in 1989, museums and other memorials mushroomed all over the region. These efforts tried both to explain the meaning of this lost history, as well as to shape public opinion on their society's shared post-war heritage. Museums and films made political use of recollections of the recent past, and employed selected museum, memorial, and media tools and tactics to make its political intent historically credible. Thirteen essays from scholars around the region take a fresh look at the subject as they address the strategies of fashioning popular perceptions of the recent past. "Books on the CEE transformations that deal with media and popular cultures should be welcomed. Past for the Eyes belongs to this extraordinary breed. The book is devoted to the visual representations of the socialist / communist past and the forms they took. The interconnected processes of visualization of the past, and the collective memory sedimentation are the main focus. The book brings together perspectives of linked but still distinctive ways of enquiry: visual studies, cultural studies, area studies, museum studies and contemporary history with its passion for ethnography and oral evidence.

    Der Tagungsband geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass der Raum in der Vormoderne nicht nur textuell beschrieben, sondern auch mit performativen Praktiken in Augenschein genommen und abgebildet wurde. Bei den Abbildungen handelt es sich um Visualisierungen des beanspruchten Raums, anschaulich gemachte Inaugenscheinnahmen und bildlich dargestellte Augenzeugenschaft. Wie wurden rechtliche Verhältnisse kartographiert? Diese zentrale Frage hat eine europäische Perspektive, die uns nach Entwicklungen und Einflüssen fragen lässt. Die Untersuchung gilt einerseits den Objekten der Raumdarstellung – wie Karten, Gemälden und Skizzen – andererseits den mit ihnen sich verbindenden performativen Praktiken. Der Band enthält eine englische Übersetzung der Einleitung und einen Ausblick in die zukünftige Dokumentation von historischen Karten In the pre-modern era, spatial relationships were not only described textually, but also depicted with performative practices. The conference volume (which contains an English introduction) deals with how legal rights were asserted through visual presentations or pictorially depicted in eyewitness accounts.     Im Rahmen der International Open Access Week zum Thema "Community over Commercialization" – "Gemeinschaft vor Kommerzialisierung" fanden fünf Coffee Lecture Vorträge statt, die sich intensiv mit dem Thema Open Access befassten. Passend zum Thema boten die Vorträge Einblick in Forschungs- und Publikationsprojekte von Angehörigen der Universität Münster. Zudem fanden zwei Vorträge zu Fördermöglichkeiten an der Universität Münster, sowie zu dem persistenten Identifier ORCID statt. ; ORCID: "Wer bin ich, und wenn ja . wirklich so viele?" Während der Forschung von Wissenschaftler:innen entstehen unter anderem Publikationen und Forschungsdaten. Für ihre Sichtbarkeit und für die Reputation der Forschenden ist es wichtig, dass diese Aktivitäten ihrer Person zugeordnet werden können. Umbenennungen z. B. durch Heirat, der Wechsel der Forschungseinrichtungen oder auch der Tätigkeit eines "Namens-Vetters" oder einer "Namens-Cousine" können diese Zuordnung erschweren. Die "Open Researcher and Contributor iD", kurz: ORCID iD, ist ein nicht-kommerzielles System zur eindeutigen Identifizierung von Autor:innen. Zu jeder ORCID iD gibt es ein Profil, in dem man Angaben zum wissenschaftlichen Werdegang sowie zu den Publikationen, Förderungen oder der Affiliation der Person eintragen kann. Die ID wird von den Autor:innen eigenständig erstellt und gepflegt. Damit ist sie unabhängig von der Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Institution und daher auch weiterhin "gültig", sollte man z. B. die Universität Münster eines Tages verlassen.     Mi investigación pretende poner en diálogo los debates sobre la performatividad, desarrollados desde la Filosofía y los Performance Studies, con los procesos de Justicia Transicional. Para ello, parto del análisis de los registros audiovisuales del Juicio contra el exdictador Efraín Ríos Montt y su director de inteligencia Mauricio Rodríguez Sánchez por crímenes de genocidio y deberes contra la humanidad contra la población Maya-Ixil [Juicio Ixil]. Este Juicio fue el primer proceso por genocidio que se desarrolló en una Corte local en el mundo, logrando reunir en un mismo espacio a distintos sectores de la sociedad guatemalteca en una discusión sobre el pasado histórico y político reciente. Los interrogatorios judiciales mediaron una disputa que iba más allá de lo legal, poniendo en escena un reenactment por la memoria histórica. Éstos abrieron el debate legal a una narrativa de longue durée desde la cual se releyó la historia trágica del colonialismo de los pueblos mayas desde la tipificación de genocidio. Mi análisis se basa en la perspectiva deconstructiva de Jacques Derrida, principalmente en su crítica a la metafísica de la presencia y del régimen oposicional que ha organizado los sistemas de pensamiento de la metafísica occidental y su etnocentrismo característico. Al analizar la teatralidad del ritual judicial busco identificar los diferentes niveles de complejidad que revelan el carácter performativo y documental de los cuerpos humanos y del uso de los archivos. Con ello, este Juicio deviene un lente para estudiar la sedimentación de lógicas históricas desde las intervenciones de sus actores en el Juicio. Esto permite objetar el régimen oposicional que ha situado al performance y a los cuerpos en el ámbito de lo efímero y lo inmediato versus la reproducción y el archivo como terreno de la mera repetición y la permanencia.     Der Konzeptualismus im Allgemeinen und dessen Moskauer Ausprägung im Speziellen werden häufig durch den Fokus ihrer ausufernden textualisierenden Kunstpraxis betrachtet. Vor dem Hintergrund einer geschichtlichen Epoche, die den Übergang des Moskauer Konzeptualismus von einer inoffiziellen künstlerischen Betätigung und damit einher gehenden Publikationspraxis im Moskauer Untergrund zu einer freien und unzensierten ästhetischen Praxis erlebt hat, ist diese spezielle Textualität des Konzeptualismus auch in ihrer medialen Faktur einschneidenden Wandlungen unterworfen. Um der in dieser Arbeit durchgeführten Untersuchung dieser medialen Besonderheiten einen begrifflichen Rahmen zu geben, wurde eine Perspektivierung auf die Ausprägungen und den Umgang mit dem Terminus des Archivs als ästhetisches Objekt und die Archivierungsmodalitäten zwischen "Archivfetischismus" und "Archiv skepsis" angelegt. Als beispielhafter Gegenstand der Analyse wurde die sich in dem fünf bändigen Werk "Poezdki za gorod" niederschlagende künstlerische Betätigung der Gruppe "Kollektivnye dejstvija" (Kollektive Aktionen) gewählt. Diese Bände dokumentieren die künstlerische Praxis der Gruppe in den Jahren 1976 bis 1989. Es existieren sowohl verschiedene Samizdatausgaben aus den 1980er Jahren, eine 1998 erschienene Verlags ausgabe ("Ad marginem"), als auch seit den späten 1990er Jahren Internet veröffentlichungen mit künstlerischen Zeugnissen der Gruppe. Die Verschiedenartigkeit der ineinander greifenden Stufen der Textualisierung und textuellen Selbstreproduktion der eigenen künstlerischen Praxis waren für die Auswahl dieses Beispiels aus schlaggebend. Dabei war insbesondere zu berücksichtigen, dass der in diesen Bänden dokumentierten Arbeit der Gruppe eine charakteristische Verschränkung von kollektiver Aktions- und kollektiver Textkunst eigen ist. Die Fokussierung auf einen prozessualen Archivbegriff hilft somit, die scheinbare Unvereinbarkeit von Aktions kunst und (Selbst) Archivierungsbestrebungen zu über spannen, ohne dass die Aktion ...

    This intervention argues that Morrison s Beloved highlights the workings of memory (Erinnerungsarbeit) rather than the concept of memory as a duty, as well as assesses the debate known as memory wars in France and gives a brief survey of what has been achieved at the level of the French state in the midst of a violent controversy about history, national memory and memorials.
