Is Peace Possible?; Conclusion; Notes; Index Europe has long imagined itself as the centre of the universe, although its precise geographical, cultural and social terrains have always been amorphous. Exploring the fear and fascination associated with the continent as an allegory, Hamid Dabashi considers Europe to be a historically formed barricade against the world.0Frantz Fanon's assessment that "Europe is literally the creation of the Third World" is still true today; but in more than one sense for the colonial has always been embedded in the capital, and the capital within the colonial. As the condition of coloniality shifts, so have the dividing lines between coloniser and colonised, and this shift calls for a reappraisal of our understanding of nationalism, xenophobia and sectarianism as the dangerous indices of the emerging worlds.0As the far-right populists captivate minds across Europe and Brexit upsets the balance of power in the European Union, this book, from a major scholar of postcolonial thought, is a timely and transformative intervention

This article deals with the economic effects of xenophobic incidents. To analyze these effects, we focus on one important industry, namely tourism. Combining a novel, district-level data set on tourism in Germany with data on xenophobic activities, we find that xenophobic demonstrations lead to a decline in tourism numbers. A media analysis on German newspapers shows that the effect is driven by the media attention towards the incidents. Looking at Dresden as a case study with the Synthetic Control Method provides support for our results. The findings presented here highlight the direct economic costs of xenophobia and strengthen the political case to fight political extremism.

In the wake of addressing multiculturalism, transculturalism, racism, and ethnicity, the issue of xenophobia and xenophilia has been somewhat marginalized. The present collection seeks, from a variety of angles, to investigate the relations between Self and Other in the New Literatures in English. How do we register differences and what does an embrace signify for both Self and Other? The contributors deal with a variety of topics, ranging from theoretical reflections on xenophobia, its exploration in terms of intertextuality and New Zealand/Maori historiography, to analyses of migrant and border narratives, and issues of transitionality, authenticity, and racism in Canada and South Africa. Others negotiate identity and alterity in Nigerian, Malaysian, Australian, Indian, Canadian, and Caribbean texts, or reflect on diaspora and orientalism in Australian–Asian and West Indian contexts

"This book's purpose is to demonstrate, via the examination of popular youth literature from the 1920s through to the 1950s, that the stories therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before the Great War, but intensified afterwards"--Provided by publisher.

Others negotiate identity and alterity in Nigerian, Malaysian, Australian, Indian, Canadian, and Caribbean texts, or reflect on diaspora and orientalism in Australian¿Asian and West Indian contexts
