    William Scott’s Troublemakers explores how a major change in the nature and forms of working-class power affected novels about U.S. industrial workers in the first half of the twentieth century. With the rise of mechanization and assembly-line labor from the 1890s to the 1930s, these laborers found that they had been transformed into a class of "mass" workers who, since that time, have been seen alternately as powerless, degraded victims or heroic, empowered icons who could rise above their oppression only through the help of representative organizations located outside the workplace. Analyzing portrayals of workers in such novels as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Ruth McKenney's Industrial Valley, and Jack London’s The Iron Heel, William Scott moves beyond narrow depictions of these laborers to show their ability to resist exploitation through their direct actions—sit-down strikes, sabotage, and other spontaneous acts of rank-and-file "troublemaking" on the job—often carried out independently of union leadership. The novel of the mass industrial worker invites us to rethink our understanding of modern forms of representation through its attempts to imagine and depict workers’ agency in an environment where it appears to be completely suppressed

Häufig werten sie das ›Andere‹ des tätigen Lebens auf oder operieren mit Überblendungen zwischen Arbeit und Nicht-Arbeit. Der Band erkundet die kultur-, sozial- und ästhetikgeschichtlichen Dimensionen dieser Thematik. Er sucht die von den Romantikern bevorzugten Inszenierungsräume von Arbeit und Müßiggang auf und schafft Begegnungen mit romantischen Figuren, die als Fleißige, Faulpelze, Künstler, Taugenichtse, Wanderer oder Mittagsschläfer die imaginierten Welten bevölkern

"When is writing poetry more labor than inspiration, more like housework than heroics of the mind? In this revisionist study, Katie Kadue shows that some of the authors we credit with groundbreaking literary feats--including Michel de Montaigne and John Milton--conceived of their writing in notably domestic and modest terms, more like putting up preserves than creating something new. In contrast to the vigorous civilizing work associated with the literature of the age and inspired by Virgil's "Georgics," poetic labor of the Renaissance emerges here as more often aligned with women's work. Kadue reveals male authors' surprising engagements with a feminized georgic mode and shows how it became central to their conceptions of what literature is and could be. This other georgic strain in literature shared the same primary concern as housekeeping: the necessity of constant, almost invisible labor in order to keep the things of the world intact. "Domestic Georgic" brings into focus a conception of literary--as well as scholarly and critical--labor not as a striving for originality and fame but as a form of maintenance work that aims at preserving individual and collective life"--

When is literary production more menial than inspired, more like housework than heroics of the mind? In this revisionist study, Katie Kadue shows that some of the authors we credit with groundbreaking literary feats—including Michel de Montaigne and John Milton—conceived of their writing in surprisingly modest and domestic terms.     Over recent decades concerns at the increased scarcity and precarity of salaried employment have dominated political struggles, theoretical debates and cultural representations in France. This study argues that such concerns are evidence of a profound shift in contemporary French economy, culture and society. Engaging with work in political economy and sociology, the book sketches a new interpretative framework, the better to understand the nature and implications of these profound changes. It examines the challenges such changes have posed to fundamental French republican values, arguing they have opened up a rift between older notions of French republican citizenship and the precarious forms of subjectivity characteristic of post-Fordist labour. The book traces the symptoms of this rift in a range of cinematic and literary representations of the contemporary workplace, as these depict the dilemmas faced, the trajectories followed, and the geographical regions inhabited by French workers of different ages, sexes, social classes, and ethnicities. This study offers close readings of cinematic and literary representations of the contemporary French workplace, focusing on the dilemmas faced by French workers of different ages, sexes, classes, and ethnicities, workers depicted as being caught between the apparent certainties of French republican citizenship and the precarious forms of subjectivity characteristic of post-Fordism.

So greifen sie etwa die Vielfalt der Vorstellungen über Arbeit auf, die von einer mühevollen, nützlichen Tätigkeit bis hin zu einem hervorbringenden, sinnhaften Tun reichen, und reflektieren somit die Ausweitung des Arbeitsverständnisses von einer ökonomischen zu einer anthropologischen Konstante. Darüber hinaus spiegeln sie das Alltagswissen im proto-industriellen Zeitalter über die Bipolarität der Arbeit als produktives und gleichzeitig destruktives Phänomen
