    "In Don't Look Away Brianne Cohen considers the role of contemporary art in developing a public commitment to ending structural violence in Europe. Cohen focuses on art activism after the turn of the twenty-first century that confronts the slow violence perpetuated against precarious peoples. Exploring the work of German filmmaker Harun Farocki, Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn, and the art collective Henry VIII's Wives, Cohen argues that their recursive art practices offer a more sustained counter to the violence undergirding the public sphere than do artworks premised on immediate rupture. Their art reflects on a variety of flashpoints of violence and vulnerability in Europe, from the legacy of the Holocaust to Islamophobia and rising anti-immigrant sentiment. Because this violence has often cultivated fear-based publics, Cohen contends that art must foster ethical and civic relations between strangers across physical and virtual borders. In contrast to art-critical practices that privilege direct action in contemporary art activism, Cohen advocates for the imaginative, messier, often more elusive potential of art in changing mindsets and fostering a nonviolent social imaginary"--

    "Elisa Giomi and Sveva Magaraggia propose that men engage in violent conduct at a higher rate than women because they are socially and culturally 'programmed' to do so. Popular culture representations play a crucial role in this process: TV series, films, pop music and videos, advertising commercials and tabloids all tend to 'normalise' violence against women as an allegedly natural inclination of males. Violent women, on the other hand, are believed to transgress both criminal and 'natural' laws, according to which they are supposed to give life, not death. By examining popular culture's depiction of men and women in their opposite, yet complementary, roles of perpetrators and victims, the authors show unexplored interconnections, namely that gender 'does' violence and violence 'does' gender. Empirical evidence is presented drawing on the following case studies: - male violence in contemporary Italian pop music - female violence in crime TV series including The Killing (Denmark, 2007-2012),The Fall (UK, 2013-2016) and True Detective (USA, 2015) - the use and abuse of gendered violence in Italian and international advertising images such as billboards and posters - male and female intimate partner violence in factual entertainment (Who the (bleep) Did I Marry? (Investigation Discovery, 2010-2015))"--

    Gewalt in den Medien wird heute im Gegensatz zu früheren Zeiten recht streng gesellschaftlich geächtet. In Rundfunk, Internet und Zeitung werde nur noch über negative und schreckliche Dinge berichtet, bemängeln Kritiker, es drohe eine „Verrohung der Kultur“. Schlimmste Folgen werden für die Leser dieser alltäglichen Grausamkeiten befürchtet. Dabei bestimmt dieser doch selbst über seinen Konsum. Mit dem Thema der Faszination von Gewalt befasst sich die vorliegende Studie. Mit verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Verfahren wie dem Eye-Tracking und Interviews nähert sich die Autorin einer möglichen Erklärung, wie und warum Gewalt in der Zeitung eine solche Beachtung erfährt. Das Layout spielt dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Dazu kommen die persönlichen Bedürfnisse: Von den Gewalt-Nachrichten versprechen die Leser sich sachliche Informationen, aber auch eine Befriedigung ihrer Neugier – Unterhaltung wird dabei eher selten gesucht. Gewalthaltige Artikel können Grenzen aufzeigen, sie können sogar lehrreich sein. Wenn ein Mord mit mehreren Toten vielleicht nicht unterhaltend ist, dann aber der Bericht über einen Trickbetrüger, der sich besonders dumm angestellt hat. Gleichzeitig kann der Text dazu dienen, sich Informationen über die Vorgehensweise von Gaunern dieser Art zu beschaffen. Auch liefern solche Informationen Stoff für Unterhaltungen mit anderen. Insgesamt stießen die gewalthaltigen Artikel in der Untersuchung auf ein deutliches Interesse, wenn auch nicht so stark wie erwartet. Im Gegenzug ließen sich auch einige Leser finden, die gewalthaltige Texte vermeiden. Sie beurteilten sie sie einerseits als nicht relevant genug, zu alltäglich und profan, sich persönlich als abgestumpft und deshalb interesselos. Andere verurteilten die Gewalt in der Zeitung als zu brutal, zu plakativ und zu detailliert. Die Beobachtungen der Untersuchung verdeutlichen, warum Gewalt in all ihren Formen so beliebt ist und in ihre Vermarktung viel Kreativität investiert wird. Das gibt es nicht erst seit der Neuzeit - deshalb ist der Unkenruf des Untergangs von Moral und Sittlichkeit durch Phänomene wie Reality-TV oder Boulevard-Journalismus wohl verfrüht. Eine Vorstellung gewaltfreier Medien ist allerdings eine Utopie, auch wenn das Informationsinteresse der Öffentlichkeit Grenzen hat. Die Faszination an medialer Gewalt entspringt durchaus "gesunden" Bedürfnissen und ist nicht verwerflich. Natürlich muss der Journalist sich in der Pflicht sehen, nicht nur das zu veröffentlichen, was dem vermuteten Leserinteresse entspricht. Selbst wenn sich Autor und Leser so weit annähern, dass beide das Gleiche wollen, liegt es in der Macht des Mediensystems, die Entscheidung zwischen öffentlichem Interesse oder Voyeurismus, Information oder Unterhaltung zu diskutieren.

    As the controversy surrounding the release of Uli Edel and Bernd Eichinger's 2008 feature film ‘The Baader Meinhof Complex’ demonstrates, West Germany's terrorist period, which reached its height in the ‘German autumn’ of 1977, is still a fascinating - and troubling - subject. One of the most provocative aspects, still today, is the high proportion of women involved in terrorism, most notoriously Ulrike Meinhof. That the film concentrates on the trajectory of Meinhof's life and mobilizes established and hence reassuring paradigms of femininity in its representation of her (as ‘mother’ and ‘hysterical woman’) suggests that the combination of women and violence is still threatening and that there is still mileage to be had from feminizing the discourse. The present study returns to the West German print media of the 1960s and 1970s and raises questions about the continuing preoccupation with this period. Looking at publications from the right-wing ‘Bild’ to the liberal ‘Der Spiegel’, it explores how violent women - not only terrorists but also others such as the convicted murderer and media femme fatale Vera Brühne - were represented in text and image. This is the first book to explore print-media representations of German terrorism from an explicitly gendered perspective, and one of very few books in English to address the period in Germany at all, despite steadily increasing interest in the UK and the US.
