    Broken Masculinities portrays the post-dictatorial novel of the 1970s in all its complexity, and introduces the reader to a 1968-era Turkey, a period which challenges Turkey’s now reinforced Islamic image by portraying the quest for sexual liberation and critical student uprisings. Günay-Erkol argues that the literature written after the 1971 coup in Turkey constitutes a coherent sub-genre and needs to be considered together. These novels share a common ground which is rich in images of men and women craving for power: general isolation, sexual-emotional frustration, and a traumatic sense of solitude and alienation. This book is an original and significant contribution to two major fields of study: (1) gender and sexuality with respect to formation of subjectivity through literature, and (2) modern literature and history through the study of Turkish literature. The chief concern in this book is not only literature’s response to a particular period in Turkey, but also the role of literature in bearing witness to trauma and drastic political acts of violence—and coming to terms with them

Bu insanların tanık olduğu Ermeni tehciri, ardından Rus işgali, ağır kış koşullarında aylarca süren göç ve bu sırada görülen ölüm, yokluk, açlık ve hastalık gibi felaketler sıralanıyor. Son kurşunu hep kendime sıkmak için, bir ‘teberık’ gibi taşıyarak kaçtım. Ölüm fermanımı okuyan ve bir celadı sevindirecek lokmayı tatırmamak uğruna kaçtım. Sonra teslim olmamak gururunu yaşamak uğruna; Karer, Kanireş, Şerefdîn, Korbox, Silbus u Stariyi kendime barınak ettim ve kaçtım... İki yıl boyunca ‘perişan palas’ diye adlandırdığımız barınaklarımızda, eriyen ve çürüyen bedenlerimize asla aldırış etmeksizin ve yorulmaksızın kaçtım. Şahsımda, yakalanmam durumunda, ‘ellerinin çok uzun’ olan abartı balonlarını, ‘zafer’ diye ispatlayacak tünemişe, bu ‘zaferi’ tattırmamak için kaçtım. Bir deri, bir kemik misaliydim çıplak dağlarda. Kış kurtlarıyla, yaz yılanlarıyla, baharın çılgınlaşırcasına eriyen kar, yağan yağmurların eşliğinde çakan şimşekleriyle bır tofanı andıran çoşkulu sel sularıyla dans edercesine kaçtım. Kaçarken kaybettiklerim ve kazandıklarım oldu. Kuşatmadan kaçtım. Daha gerillalarla tanışmamış kovboy şımarıkların rahatça cirit attığı o kırsal silsilelerde "yakalanması an meselesi" söylemine inananların ezberlerini bozmak için kaçtım . Bütün korkuları ayaklarımın altına alıp kaçmaktı kaçışım. Yakalanıp esmer yürekli çocukların gözleri önünde onurlarıyla oynanmaması için, bedenlerini son çare Dersim'in çılgın uçurumlarına savuran o gelinlerin kınalarını içimde taşıyarak kaçtım. Bir gün geri dönüp, kırılan aşkımı kırılan devrimimi kırılan dilimi ve kırılan halkımı, yarıda kesilen gülücüklerimi, özlemlerimi ve Hüseyin Morsümbül ile "benamus!" diye alay ettiğimiz zoru yenmek için kaçtım... Şaşkınlıklar yaratarak, "Yahu bu adam yerin dibine mi girdi?" cümlesine yansıyan "yenilgi" itirafını sahiplerine tattırmayı, bir "efsane" misali, Meriç Irmağı'nın öte yanına geçebildiğim o yıldızlı gecenin bir vaktinde başardım. Kendimi ansızın ve yalnız bulduğum Şerefdin Dağı'nın doruklarından Meriç Irmağı'nın öte yanına kadar olan o serüvenli yolculuklarımı, yıldızlara haykırarak, başlanacak özlemlerimin kapılarını aralayarak başardım. Başlanacak özlemin "başarı" sayılacağı bir serüveni anlıyor ya da biliyor musunuz? Böyle bir serüvenin anlaşılması için ancak yaşanması gerekir diye düşünüyorum. Siz bunu yaşamayın, hayat size bunu yaşatmasın, varsın ben anlaşılmayayım. Parçalanmış hislerin, darmadağın edilmiş duyguların o ağır yükünü taşıyan bir iradeyi okuyacaksınız bu romanda. Ben kaçmayı başardım, özlemlerim kuşatma altında kaldı. Ve ben özlemlerimi özlediklerimi hep özledim, onların özlemiyle bir iltica yürek taşıdım hep. Halen özlemlerimle bekliyorum!

    The Turkish Novel and the Quest for Rationality' is the first book to contextualize the Turkish novel with regard to the intellectual developments motivating the Turkish modernization project since the 18th century. The book provides a dialectical narrative for the emergence and development of the Turkish novel in order to highlight the genre's critical role within the modernization project. In doing so, it also delineates the changing forms the novel assumes in the Turkish context from a platform for new literature to a manifestation of crisis in the face of totalizing rationality. Vis-a-vis modernization's engagement with rationality, 'The Turkish Novel and the Quest for Rationality' reveals unexplored ways of conceptualizing the development of the genre in non-western contexts

"The Turkish journalist and intellectual Celal Nuri Ileri's unique blend of advocacy for modernity and westernization with Turkish nationalism and Muslim reformism set him apart from his fellow "Young Turk" thinkers, politicians and publicists, all of whom sought to halt the decay of the Ottoman Empire in its competition with the European powers. Although a supporter of the national resistance movement after World War I, his core beliefs about the need for a continued role for Islam in society, and maintenance of the Ottoman caliphate, were increasingly at odds with the secularist and Turkish-nationalist republic established by Mustafa Kemal and his circle from 1923. Here, in the first monograph in English on Celal Nuri, York Norman outlines and analyses his ideas and policies, from Nuri's position on minorities, to women and family and Islamic reform. Based on a broad range of primary and secondary sources, Norman reveals the prophetic qualities of and renewed interest in Nuri's ideas after the rise of Islamist political movements in Turkey in the 1990s."--

    This volume seeks to understand more about the lives and histories of the general population of the Republic of Turkey during the years 1928 and 1945. During this period, concepts of Turkish nationalism were expounded in a top-down effort to rally the population to be united as Turks. Being a top-down effort, there needed to be mechanisms through which to transmit these concepts to the general population. This work assesses the level to which authors of indigenous Turkish detective fiction written between 1928 and 1945 attempted to aid in this process of transmission. Five series of this period are carefully analysed; the clear conclusion is that there was authorial intent to spread ideas of "Turkism" in each and every series
