    Der Begriff „Literatur“ ist seit jeher unbestimmt und definitionsresistent, zugleich aber als disziplinäre Begrenzung gerade in Zeiten der Überschreitung überkommener Fachgrenzen unverzichtbar. Der Band diskutiert Möglichkeiten, den Begriff so zu bestimmen, dass er zur Heuristik in unterschiedlichen historischen und kulturellen Milieus fruchtbar verwendet werden kann. Zugleich wird ausgehend von Phänomenen wie Fiktionalität und Literarizität nach gemeinsamen Merkmalen von Literatur gesucht. Behandelt werden folgende Themen: 1. Aspekte des Prototyps ‚Literatur‘, 2. Fiktionalität, 3. Historische Aspekte des Phänomens ‚Literatur‘, 4. Kulturelle und soziale Aspekte des Phänomens ‚Literatur‘, 5. Konstitution des Gegenstandes Literatur durch die Literaturwissenschaft. Der Band versammelt Beiträge u. a. von Els Andringa, Alexander H. Arweiler, Karl Eibl, Ulla Fix, Hans-Edwin Friedrich, Daniel Fulda, Fotis Jannidis, Liesbeth Korthals Altes, Oliver Krug, Gerhard Lauer, Matías Martínez, Hans-Harald Müller, Bruno Quast, Christoph Reinfandt, Michael Scheffel, Erich Schön, Jost Schneider, Margrit Schreier, Roberto Simanowski, Werner Strube, Elisabeth Stuck, Friedrich Vollhardt, Klaus Weimar, Simone Winko und Frank Zipfel The concept of "literature" is notoriously vague and defies definition, yet at the same time it is indispensable in an age where traditional subject boundaries are breaking down. This volume discusses possible ways of defining the concept in such a manner that it can be productively deployed heuristically in varied historical and cultural contexts. At the same time, phenomena such as fictionality and literaricity are taken as the starting point for a search for common features of literature. The following topics are dealt with: 1.     Employing thc theoretical resources provided by cultural critics such as Adorno, Jameson, Althusser, and Foucault, M. Keith Booker examines the treatment of issues of power and domination in modern literature. Discussing texts such as Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, Thomas Pynchon's V., and Italo Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler, Booker focuses on gender relations as a locus of struggles for power in human relations generally. He also pays special attention to the work of Samuel Beckett, reading the novels Watt and The Lost Ones to explore the issues of power and domination in an Irish cultural context. For all of the texts read, such issues are explored in terms not only of content but of style and form. What is distinctive about many modern texts, Booker claims, is the reflexive way literary meditations on power, authority, and domination turn inward to involve examinations of textuality and reading as images of the kinds of struggles for mastery that inform society at large. Booker suggests that literary knowledge is of a different order than the traditional theoretical knowledge that is equated with power in the West. "Literature has the potential to explore and illuminate objects of inquiry in a mode of dialogue and performance rather than by seeking to dominate them in the traditional mode of science," he writes. "Especially in the difficult and complex texts of modern literature, successful reading requires that readers and texts work together, pointing toward ways the human drive for mastery can be fulfilled through cooperation rather than through demanding the submission of some Other who is being mastered or dominated."

    "Les collègues et amis du Professeur Claude Roussel ont souhaité rendre hommage à sa personne et à son oeuvre en lui offrant un volume de Mélanges. Les trente études de langue et de littérature réunies dans cet ouvrage portent sur des sujets qui ont nourri sa recherche et façonné sa pensée : l'édition de textes, dont il est un maître absolu, et la chanson de geste composée à l'automne du Moyen Âge. Son édition de La Belle Hélène de Constantinople et l'étude littéraire qu'il a consacrée à cette oeuvre ont transformé radicalement l'appréciation quelque peu réservée, voire négative, de la critique sur l'esthétique des chansons de geste tardives et sur leur place dans la culture et la production littéraire médiévales. Depuis, Claude Roussel a dédié des articles à des thèmes variés : courtoisie, hospitalité et savoir-vivre, mythe des enfants-cygnes, figure royale, croisade, culture populaire et culture cléricale, et a participé à l'édition du Devisement du Monde de Marco Polo dirigée par Philippe Ménard. Engagés à leur tour sur la voie ouverte par ces travaux, les auteurs de ce volume se sont intéressés aux motifs épiques et à leurs relectures ou réécritures (la geste), à l'exploration de mondes exotiques ou spirituels (la route) et à des problèmes éditoriaux ou de tradition manuscrite (le livre).
