This book argues against the former translation and identifies a motif of the 'foreign woman' within the Hebrew scripture where she originates. It also continues to trace how this motif develops after she leaves Proverbs 1-9 to the later Jewish wisdom literature

    Der »Orient« als kulturgeografische Kategorie ist zugleich diffus und überdeterminiert: changierend zwischen den Klischees von Tyrannei und Despotismus einerseits, Sinnlichkeit und Weisheit andererseits. Obwohl die Idee einer orientalischen Entität ideologiekritisch hinterfragt worden ist, wird der Topos heute nicht nur verklärend als touristisches Reiseziel in Katalogen gepriesen, sondern auch in der aktuellen politischen Situation als Bild des arabischen, orientalischen Anderen massenmedial fortgeschrieben. In diesem Kontext erhalten Kunst und Literatur eine wichtige Funktion als Reflexionsmedien, mit denen Fremdbilder kritisch hinterfragt werden können. In zehn interdisziplinären Beiträgen analysiert der vorliegende Sammelband künstlerische und literarische Praktiken der Differenzsetzung der »orientalischen Fremde«.

The novel interweaves their endless suppositions into a work that is at once political parable and surreal fantasia. Some think X is 50 years old; others that she is 22. Some believe she has occult powers and has thereby enslaved the young men of the street; others think she is a clever trickster playing mind games with the common people. Who is Madam X? How has she brought the good people of Five Spice Street to their knees either in worship or in exasperation? The unknown narrator takes no sides in the endlessinterplay of visions, arguments, and opinions. The investigation rages, as the street becomes a Walpurgisnacht of speculations, fantasies, and prejudices.
