    « Comic books for adults have become one of the most novel and colourful forms of cultural expression in the Arab world today. During the last ten years, young Arabs have crafted stories explaining issues such as authoritarianism, resistance, war, sex, gender relations and youth culture. These are distributed through informal channels as well as independent bookstores and websites. Events like the annual Cairocomix festival in Egypt and the Mahmoud Kahil Award in Lebanon evidence the importance of this cultural phenomenon. ‘Comics in Contemporary Arab Culture’ focuses on the production of these comics in Egypt and Lebanon, countries at the forefront of the development of the genre for adults. Jacob Hoigilt guides the reader through the emergence of independent comics, explores their social and political critique, and analyses their visual and verbal rhetoric. Analysing more than 50 illustrations, included here, he shows that Arab comics are revealing of the changing attitudes towards politics, social relations and even language. While political analysts often paint a bleak picture of the Arab world after 2011, this book suggests that art and storytelling continue to nourish a spirit of liberty and freedom despite political setbacks.     ger: Die zentrale Fragestellung der Diplomarbeit ?Socio-cultural influences on motivation in a multicultural language classroom? ist, ob und zu welchem Grad äußere Faktoren, wie Eltern, der Freundeskreis, LehrerInnen und der soziale Hintergrund eines Lernenden deren Motivation, und in Folge die Ergebnisse des Sprachenlernens beeinflussen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit theoretischen Ansätzen und Theorien, um einen wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund zum Thema Motivation zu gewährleisten. Der zweite Teil der Diplomarbeit konzentriert sich auf individuelle Charakteristiken des jeweiligen Lernenden. Die Frage nach einem idealen Alter, Geschlecht und Persönlichkeit für positiven Spracherwerb wird behandelt. Ebenso wird Sprache als Marker für soziale Identität diskutiert, da Sprache und Sprachbeherrschung als wichtiger Teil des Selbstkonzepts eines Individuums gesehen werden. Der folgende Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Mikrokontext des Lernenden und knüpft damit schlussendlich an die eingangs gestellte Fragestellung an. Die Rolle der Eltern und des sozialen Umfelds eines Lerners wird anhand einer Reihe von Studien betrachtet. Schlussendlich wird eine Studie der englischen Qualifications and Curriculum Authority behandelt, welche die Einstellung von SchülerInnen zum Sprachenlernen untersucht. Der letzte Teil meiner Diplomarbeit präsentiert meine eigene empirische Studie, welche an vier höheren Schulen in der Region West Midlands, in England durchgeführt wurde. Sie beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie englische SchülerInnen, sowie deren Freunde und Eltern die deutsche Sprache und die Kultur deutschsprachiger Länder einschätzen und bewerten. eng: The main question of the thesis ?Socio-cultural influences on motivation in a multicultural language classroom? is whether and to what extent outer factors, such as parents, peers, teachers and the social background of a learner influences their motivation for, and consequently their performance in learning a foreign language. The first part of the work is mainly concerned with theoretical approaches and theories, in order to provide a scientific background to the issue of motivation. The second part of the thesis draws on individual learner differences. The question whether there is such thing as an ideal age, gender and personality for language learning is discussed. The next part of the thesis deals with the learner?s micro-context, and as such finally relates to the initial hypothesis in particular. The role of parents and the social context of a learner are examined, a number of studies which underline the correlation between a financially-secured background and academic success are provided. Mother and father support also seems of outmost importance for the development of the child, especially during the time before puberty. Moving on, the impact of teacher motivation and teaching methods, such as giving constructive feedback are discussed. The following sub-chapter shows the influences of peer groups on academic achievement and motivation, and underlines the human urge to feel incorporated and accepted by a certain social group. Last but not least, a study of the English Qualifications and Curriculum Authority on pupils? views on language learning is presented. The final part of the thesis presents my own empirical study carried out among students and teachers in four secondary schools in the West Midlands, England. It is concerned with how English students, and their friends and parents, value the German language as well as the culture of German speaking countries.

With the rise of industrialization, they were largely considered peripheral to the course of urban affairs. Now they have become central to new ways of thinking about the challenges of economic and social change, as well as repositioning cities within competitive global networks. In this timely and thought-provoking book, John and Margaret Gold provide a reflective and evidence-based historical survey of the processes and actors involved, charting the ways that regular festivals have now become embedded in urban life and city planning. Beginning with David Garrick's rain-drenched Shakespearean Jubilee and ending with Sydney's flamboyant Mardi Gras celebrations, it encompasses the emergence and consolidation of city festivals. After a contextual historical survey that stretches from Antiquity to the late nineteenth century, there are detailed case studies of pioneering European arts festivals in their urban context: Venice's Biennale, the Salzburg Festival, the Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh's International Festival.     Das Lehrbuch bietet eine aktuelle Einführung in das Studium der gegenwärtigen multizentrischen Welt.
