    This paper explores the possibility of international technology transfer in lieu of trade in a model with absolute and comparative advantage. Countries having absolute advantage in producing a good may offer that technology to a possible trading partner against a fee and both the countries might gain. Thus, gains from trade might be dominated by gains from technology transfer depending on the extent of comparative and absolute advantages. We provide detailed conditions under which free trade equilibrium will be pre-empted by technology transfer. Such an avenue of fruitful exchange remains unexplored in the Ricardian model of trade.

    The collapse of the Soviet Union forced Russia to engage in a process of nation building. This involved a reassessment of the past, both historical and cultural, and how it should be remembered. The publication of previously barely known underground and émigré literary works presented an opportunity to reappraise 'official' Soviet literature and re-evaluate twentieth-century Russian literature as a whole.This book explores changes to the poetry canon – an instrument for maintaining individual and collective memory – to show how cultural memory has informed the evolution of post-Soviet Russian identity. It examines how concerns over identity are shaping the canon, and in which directions, and analyses the interrelationship between national identity (whether ethnic, imperial, or civic) and attempts to revise the canon. This study situates the discussion of national identity within the cultural field and in the context of canon formation as a complex expression of aesthetic, political, and institutional factors. It encompasses a period of far-reaching upheaval in Russia and reveals the tension between a desire for change and a longing for stability that was expressed by attempts to reshape the literary canon and, by doing so, to create a new twentieth-century past and the foundations of a new identity for the nation

    Im Kern ist die vorliegende Untersuchung zu Scham als narrative Strategie eine Untersuchung verschiedener Schamaffekte in Romanen und Kurzgeschichten von Autorinnen der schottischen Gegenwartsliteratur. Die seit 1990 entstandenen Texte von Laura Hird, Jackie Kay, A. L. Kennedy und Ali Smith bilden ein in seiner Vielfalt und Präsenz herausragendes Korpus literarischer Schamnarrative. Die behandelten Texte schildern eine große Bandbreite von Schamerlebnissen, Schamgefühlen und Schamreaktionen; da sie dies sowohl aus weiblicher wie auch aus männlicher Perspektive tun, decken sie ein sehr großes Spektrum möglicher Schamszenarien ab. Der Aspekt der Scham hat in Bezug auf die hier behandelten Texte in der Forschungsliteratur bislang noch keine Erwähnung gefunden, weswegen sich der Hauptteil der Arbeit diesem Desiderat widmet. Im Anschluss an den Hauptteil der Studie folgt ein Ausblick auf aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten zu Literatur und Emotionen. Im Kapitel Perspectives on Emotion and Literature werden verschiedene affekttheoretische Perspektiven angeboten.     Two British novels exemplify an observation made analysing a larger corpus of contemporary 'hotel novels': both Ali Smith's "Hotel World" (2002) and Monica Ali's "In the Kitchen" (2009) focus on the hotel as a precarious workplace, with women being most vulnerable to its exploitative structures. The Imperial Hotel in Ali's novel is an architectural relic from the British Empire; a setting, where the migrant workers' labour conditions become evident. The Global Hotel in Smith's novel synthesises globalised and local structures, for instance by subverting the function of a hotel as a guest house accommodating affluent customers from all over the world: a receptionist opens the doors to a homeless woman, while the ghost of a female worker killed in an accident haunts the Global Hotel. The hotel has long served as a political metaphor when it comes to criticising liberal migration politics - especially in Britain, which the conservative MP Kenneth Baker referred to as "a sovereign nation, not a hotel" in 1995. In 2004, Tony Blair - then Prime Minister - famously said that "[w]e will neither be fortress Britain, nor will we be an open house". This paper explores these dialectics of openness and closeness in hotel fiction with a focus on the depiction of labour.

    Das Studienobjekt ist The Book of Mormon (1830), welches höchst selbstreflexiv ist. Die Studie folgt dem Impuls des Affective Turn und nutzt die spezifische Entwicklung des Begriffs des Postsäkularen (Jürgen Habermas) nach Burkhard Hasebrink und Peter Strohschneider. In der Studie wird die Kategorie Heilige Schrift betrachtet – Texte, die dem Prozess der Scripturalization (Seth Perry) unterliegen. Viele solche Texte wurden auf einen transzendenten Schreibbefehl (Ursula Peters) hin geschrieben und werden von Gläubigen als Epiphanie (Mircea Eliade) betrachtet. Die besonderen Eigenschaften und das Selbstverständnis solcher Texte macht einen säkular-wissenschaftlichen Zugang besonders schwierig. Die Studie betont die Performativität (J. L. Austin) solcher Texte und entwickelt einen Ansatz, die Performativität des geschriebenen Textes zu erfassen. Sie hinterfragt das Konzept von Heiliger Schrift „als Literatur“ mit dem pragmatisch-historisierenden Literaturbegriff von Fotis Jannidis, Gerhard Lauer und Simone Winko. Der Textbegriff beruht auf Konrad Ehlichs Überlieferungstext. Die selbstreflexiven textimmanenten Rezeptions-Anweisungen von The Book of Mormon werden mit der südasiatischen Rasa-Ästhetik gefasst, insbesondere anhand der Dhvani-Schule der Theoretiker Ānandavardhana und Abhinavagupta. Die Ästhetik-Tradition betont das Primat der empathisch-affektiven Kunsterfahrung, und die Dhvani-Schule behauptet, dass die affektive Gesamtbedeutung eines Werks in der emotionalen Entwicklung des Protagonisten liegt. Rasadhvani schlägt zwei unterschiedliche jedoch komplementäre Lesemethoden für Heilige Schrift vor: als śāstranaye (Glaubenslehre) und als kāvyanaye (affektive Poesie). Die verschiedenen theoretischen Begriffe werden weitestgehend aus dem Text heraus legitimiert, z. B. wird die Fiktionalität (Jannidis, Lauer und Winko) durch die Linse der utopischen Methode (Hans-Jürgen Krysmanski) betrachtet.     Theory's engagement with language on the one hand, with literature's potential to generate knowledge that is theoretically relevant on the other, has a long history. One of its roots lies in the approach to culture and society developed by enlightenment anthropology and philosophy. In this paper Christian Moser intends to analyze the function attributed to language in eighteenth-century theories of the origin of culture and society. What we nowadays call 'cultural theory' is genealogically related to these early investigations into the constitution of human society. Social theories of the enlightenment first emerged in the contexts of a secularized universal history and the nascent discourses of anthropology and the philosophy of history. They often took the form of a 'conjectural history': speculations about the origin of society and its institutions; the origin of government, of law, and of social inequality; all of them linked systematically to the origin of language. While present-day cultural theory no longer harbours this obsession with origins, it still carries with it a rich legacy of enlightenment thought, not least its idea that social structure and linguistic structure are interconnected. Therefore it seems apposite to trace back current 'languages of theory' to eighteenth-century 'theories of language' and their interplay with 'theories of society.'
