    "In the years following 9/11, American TV developed a preoccupation with apocalypse. Science fiction and fantasy shows ranging from Firefly to Heroes, from the rebooted Battlestar Galactica to Lost, envisaged scenarios in which world-changing disasters were either threatened or actually took place. During the same period numerous commentators observed that the American media's representation of gender had undergone a marked regression, possibly, it was suggested, as a consequence of the 9/11 attacks and the feelings of weakness and insecurity they engendered in the nation's men. Eve Bennett investigates whether the same impulse to return to traditional images of masculinity and femininity can be found in the contemporary cycle of apocalyptic series, programmes which, like 9/11 itself, present plenty of opportunity for narratives of damsels-in-distress and heroic male rescuers.     "Following the release of Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000 the ancient world epic has experienced a revival in studio and audience interest. Building on existing scholarship on the Cold War epics of the 1950s-60s, including Ben-Hur, Spartacus and The Robe, this original study explores the current cycle of ancient world epics in cinema within the social and political climate created by September 11th 2001. Examining films produced against the backdrop of the War on Terror and subsequent invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, this book assesses the relationship between mainstream cinema and American society through depictions of the ancient world, conflict and faith. Davies explores how these films evoke depictions of WWII, the Vietnam War and the Western in portraying warfare in the ancient world, as well discussing the influence of genre hybridisation, narration and reception theory. He questions the extent to which ancient world epics utilise allegory, analogy and allusion to parallel past and present in an industry often dictated by market forces.     Der 11. September 2001 stellt ein Ereignis von historischem Ausmass dar. Auch wenn heute, fünf Jahre danach eine Art Normalität eingekehrt zu sein scheint. Die Arbeiten am Ground Zero sind abgeschlossen und schon bald wird der Freedom Tower die Skyline von New York wieder vervollständigen und ein neues Symbol des American Way of Life verkörpern. Angesichts des Ausmasses der Anschläge, scheint es nur all zu leicht nachvollziehbar, dass viele Menschen sich zu diesem Thema äussern wollten, und so kam es in der unmittelbaren Zeit danach zu einer wahren Flut an Veröffentlichungen. Doch welcher Art waren die Veröffentlichungen und mit welcher Intention schrieben die Autoren ihre Werke? Und wie kann sich ihre Intention innerhalb des gewählten Genres etablieren? Diesen Fragen möchte ich im Rahmen dieser Arbeit nachgehen. Ein Begriff der eng im Zusammenhang mit dem 11.September steht ist der von Samuel P. Huntington geprägte Begriff "Kampf der Kulturen". In diesem Aufsatz nimmt Huntington Stellung zur Position der Westlichen Staaten, deren Vormachtstellung nicht länger haltbar ist, da es Staaten gibt, die nicht länger im Schatten des Westens stehen wollen. So bleibt dem Westen nach Huntington nur eins, wenn er eine dauerhafte Konfrontation und seinen Untergang vermeiden will, er muss seine Vormachtsstellung zu Gunsten von Multikulturalität und Multipolarität aufgeben. Anders als Huntington sieht der Sprachtheoretiker und Begründer der Generativen Transformationsgrammatik, Noam Chomsky in seinem Werk "The Attack" nur einen Hauptschuldigen für die Terroranschläge auf die Twin Towers, die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Mit ihrer Aussenpolitik sind sie für Chomsky ein Terrorstaat, welcher anderen Staaten ihre Sichtweise aufzwingen will. Anne Nelson und Neil la Bute wählen mit ihren Theaterstücken "The Guys" und "The Mercy Seat" ein Genre, das auf zwei Wegen die Rezipienten erreicht, als Text und auf der Bühne. Anne Nelson bettet ihr Stück in eine wahre Begebenheit, in der sie von Ihrer Begegnung mit dem Chef der New Yorker Feuerwache erzählt. Darüber hinaus quälen ihn tiefe Schuldgefühle, da er nicht für seine Jungs da sein konnte, um sie zu beschützen. Anne Nelson soll ihm helfen die Worte wieder zu finden und sich selbst zu vergeben. Der Zeichner Art Spiegelmann erzählt in seinem Comic "In the Shadow of no Towers" wie er und seine Familie den 11. September 2001 erlebten. Doch stellt er sich als Erzähler nicht selbst dar, sondern schlüpft wie in seinen erfolgreichen "Maus" Comics in die Gestallt einer Maus, um so die nötige Distanz zu gewinnen die Ereignisse zu erzählen. Ausserdem nimmt er so Rückbezug auf seine Vergangenheit, übt Kritik an der bestehenden Regierung und mahnt seine Mitbürger ihr Recht als mündiger Staatsbürger wahrzunehmen und zur Wahl zu gehen. In der Zeit nach dem 11. September gab es zahlreiche Konzerte, um Geld für die Opfer zu sammeln und wie zu Zeiten des Vietnam Krieges die Moral der Bevölkerung zu stärken. Doch was kann Musik beim Menschen bewirken? Sie wird als therapeutisches Mittel eingesetzt, da nur sie in der Lage ist den Menschen in eine Stimmung zu versetzen, in der er sich lösen kann und so in der Lage ist sich dem Erlebten zu stellen und es zu verarbeiten. Darüber hinaus muss die Frage in Bezug auf die Texte gestellt werden, ob und in wie weit die Texte politisch sind oder genutzt werden können.

During the same period numerous commentators observed that the American media's representation of gender had undergone a marked regression, possibly, it was suggested, as a consequence of the 9/11 attacks and the feelings of weakness and insecurity they engendered in the nation's men. Eve Bennett investigates whether the same impulse to return to traditional images of masculinity and femininity can be found in the contemporary cycle of apocalyptic series, programmes which, like 9/11 itself, present plenty of opportunity for narratives of damsels-in-distress and heroic male rescuers.     "Following the release of Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000 the ancient world epic has experienced a revival in studio and audience interest. Building on existing scholarship on the Cold War epics of the 1950s-60s, including Ben-Hur, Spartacus and The Robe, this original study explores the current cycle of ancient world epics in cinema within the social and political climate created by September 11th 2001. Examining films produced against the backdrop of the War on Terror and subsequent invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, this book assesses the relationship between mainstream cinema and American society through depictions of the ancient world, conflict and faith. Davies explores how these films evoke depictions of WWII, the Vietnam War and the Western in portraying warfare in the ancient world, as well discussing the influence of genre hybridisation, narration and reception theory. He questions the extent to which ancient world epics utilise allegory, analogy and allusion to parallel past and present in an industry often dictated by market forces.
