Analysiert werden nach einer theoretischen Grundlegung zunächst die kulturgeschichtlichen Diskurse von Sexualität und Tod in dieser Zeit und dann u.a. Texte von Walpole, Lewis, Mary Shelley, Emily Brontë, Collins, Le Fanu, Wilde und Stoker

    Main description: The study deals with the thematic combination of 'sexuality and death' in order to explore the functional-structural relationship between literary and cultural discourses and its historical changes. The areas of investigation are English culture between the late 18th and the late 19th century as well as the gothic and sensation narratives of the time. A thorough theoretical foundation is followed first by an investigation of historical developments in the cultural discourses of sexuality and death, and then by extensive analyses of texts by Walpole, Lewis, Mary Shelley, Emily Brontk, Collins, Le Fanu, Wilde, Stoker and others

    This book explores the extent to which four sensation novelists responded to the Victorian theorizing of professionalism. A crucial period of redefinition of the professional ideal, the third quarter of the nineteenth century also witnessed the rise and the decline of the sensation novel, a scandalous and electrifying form that challenged aesthetic and socio-cultural standards. Owing to their controversial position in the literary marketplace, novelists like Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Charles Reade and Ellen Wood developed a keen interest in professional issues, which occupy centre stage in their 1850s-70s narratives. By drawing on a variety of sociological, cultural and philosophical theories, Costantini skilfully assesses the ideological implications of the genre’s fictionalization of professionalism. The study approaches these texts through the lens of domestic space, gender, knowledge, and power. This approach serves to investigate the cultural roots of the 'closet' - the male homosexual secret - which reveals a more general notion of male sec.
