    Abstract ; Die Filmkunst Andrej Tarkowskijs wird am ehesten durch sein Bildmotiv gekennzeichnet. Nach Tarkowskij manifestiert sich im filmischen Bild die "Beobachtung von Lebensfakten, die in der Zeit angesiedelt sind, die entsprechend den Formen des Lebens selbst und dessen Zeitgesetzen organisiert werden." Die Filmkunst ist demnach eine Bildhauerei aus Zeit. In der vorliegenden Abhandlung werden die wahrnehmungstheoretischen und historischen Grundlagen der verschiedenen Bildmotive bei Tarkowskij, dargestellt in den Filmen Ivans Kindheit, Andrej Rubljow, Solaris, Spiegel, Stalker, Nostalgia und Opfer, untersucht. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Versuch, zu veranschaulichen, wie das filmische Bild - als Gegenwarts- und Geschichtsbilder sowie als Erinnerungs- und Traumbilder - sich zu eigener zeitlicher und räumlicher Existenz entfaltet, und folglich der Wirklichkeit und seiner erzählerischen Kontinuität gegenüber Grenzen zieht. Die Untersuchung zielt auch darauf ab, die filmtechnische Eigenart der Bildmotive bei Tarkowskij, wie Zeitlupe, Überwindung der Trägheit sowie das Schweben bzw. die Überwindung der Gravitation, zu erörtern, und ihre epistemologischen und ästhetischen Implikationen zu deuten. ; Abstract ; Andrey Tarkovsky’s aesthetics is characterised predominantly through his image motifs. For Tarkovsky the film image is “basically observation of life’s facts within time, organised according to the pattern of life itself, and observing its time laws.” The art of film is therefore a “sculpting in time.” This treatise examines the epistemological and historical foundations of various image motifs in Tarkovsky’s films: Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, Nostalgia and Sacrifice. It attempts to illustrate how the cinematic image - as represented in the presence, history, remembrance and dreams - unfolds into its own temporal and spatial existence and draws its bounds against reality and its narrative continuity. This study also aims at interpreting the technical nature Tarkovsky’s image motifs, such as slow motion, overcoming inertia and gravity (motif of floating), and their epistemological and aesthetic implications.

    This book offers a new interpretation of ancient Greek sacrifice from a cultural poetic perspective. Through close readings of the 'Theogony', the Homeric 'Hymn to Demeter', the Homeric 'Hymn to Hermes', and the 'Odyssey' in conjunction with evidence from material culture, it demonstrates how sacrifice narratives in early Greek hexameter poetry are intimately connected to a mythic-poetic discourse referred to as the "politics of the belly". This mythic-poetic discourse presents sacrifice as a site of symbolic conflict between the male stomach and female womb for both mortals and immortals. Ultimately, the book argues that the ritual of sacrifice operates as a cultural mechanism for the perpetuation of patriarchal ideology not just in early Greek hexameter, but throughout Greek cultural history

    The Italian fascists under Benito Mussolini appropriated many aspects of the country’s Catholic religious heritage to exploit the mystique and power of the sacred. One concept that the regime deployed as a core strategy was that of "sacrifice." In this book, Chiara Ferrari interrogates how the rhetoric of sacrifice was used by the Italian fascist regime throughout the interwar years to support its totalitarian project and its vision of an all-encompassing bond between the people and the state.The Rhetoric of Violence and Sacrifice in Fascist Italy focuses on speeches by Benito Mussolini and key literary works by prominent writers Carlo Emilio Gadda and Elio Vittorini. Through this investigation, Ferrari demonstrates how sacrifice functioned in relation to other elements of fascist rhetoric, such as the frequent reiterations of an impending national crisis, the need for collaboration among social classes, and the forging of social contact between the leader and the people

    Jean Chrysostome est l’un des témoins de l’insistance mise, dès le ive siècle, sur la radicalité de la présence du Christ dans l’eucharistie et sur la sainteté de la figure du prêtre. Dans une oeuvre aussi imposante que la sienne, beaucoup de textes peuvent évoquer une irruption du langage du sacré dans la théologie chrétienne des sacrements et des ministères. Pourtant, le coeur de la vision chrysostomienne du sacerdoce renvoie au sacrifice du Christ et à celui qu’offrent, à leur tour, les chrétiens dans leur vie ordinaire. Au sens propre, le prêtre n’accomplit aucun sacrifice. L’identité du prêtre chrétien se trouve donc pour une certaine part dans la médiation qu’il accomplit à l’égard des sacrements, mais plus encore dans l’expression qu’il donne au ministère hiérarchique. Ainsi, la spécificité du ministère ordonné dans la vie de l’Église s’exprime principalement dans les fonctions de gouvernement et d’enseignement. John Chrysostom is a witness of the insistence, from the fourth century, on the radicality of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist and on the holiness of the priest’s figure. In a work as imposing as his, many texts can allude to an irruption of the language of the sacred in Christian theology of sacraments and ministries. Yet the heart of the Chrysostomian vision of the priesthood refers to the sacrifice of Christ and to the sacrifice which the Christians offer in their ordinary lives. In the literal sense, the priest makes no sacrifice. To some extent, the identity of the Christian priest is thus found in the mediation he carries out with regard to the sacraments, but even more in the expression he gives to the hierarchical ministry. Thus, the specificity of the ordained ministry in the life of the Church is expressed principally in the functions of government and teaching.

    In recent decades, scholars have come to see 1 Corinthians as a rhetorically unified response to the problem of divisions among Corinthian believers. This essay explores the ways in which Paul presents the cross as the organizing principle that can bind together three different forms of community division: the cult of the personality (1:10–4:21); the freedom to eat idol meat (8:1–11:1); and economic disparities when gathered for a meal (11:17–34). In each case, Paul appeals implicitly or explicitly to the cross as a remedy for the all-too-familiar strains on the fractured community. In the end, Paul’s countercultural message about the cross offers a word of exhortation for the American church today, as it navigates a society that shares much in common with first-century Corinth.

First, I describe the Roman context, and the natural “reading” of the image of a crucified person there, as the background to considering the absence of that image in early Christianity. This leads to exploration of the ways that early Christianity used a variety of typological images to weave a new frame of meaning around the crucifixion of Christ. Then, using Tom Holland’s recent historical synopsis of Christianity, I indicate how this new aesthetic of the cross lodged itself in shared cultural assumptions and perceptions. Finally, I consider the crucial American case of lynching, in which White Christian churches betrayed this distinctive meaning of the crucifixion, Black churches affirmed it, and the cultural aesthetic of crucifixion proved itself a key medium for resistance to lynching. Finally, I suggest some implications for church preaching and teaching in relation to the surrounding culture today.

    This monograph examines Hebrews’ understanding of the relationship between old covenant sacrifices and Christ’s new covenant sacrifice, especially as it relates to the question of efficacy. Most scholars think the author of Hebrews strips the levitical sacrifices of most, if not all, efficacy, but this work affirms a more positive depiction of the levitical sacrifices. A mystical apocalyptic tradition stands behind Hebrews’ description of the heavenly cult , which establishes the framework for relating the levitical sacrifice to Christ’s sacrifice. The earthly, levitical cult was efficacious when it corresponded to or synchronized with the heavenly sacrifice of Christ. Still, the author of Hebrews develops the notion of the heavenly cult in unique ways, as Christ’s sacrifice both validates the earthly practice but also, due to his new covenant theology, calls for its end. Ribbens’ bold proposal joins a growing number of scholars that place Hebrews in the mystical apocalyptic tradition, highlights positive statements in Hebrews related to the efficacy of levitical sacrifices that are often overlooked, and relies on the heavenly cult to reconcile the positive and negative descriptions of the levitical cult.

    Blood for Thought delves into a relatively unexplored area of rabbinic literature: the vast corpus of laws, regulations, and instructions pertaining to sacrificial rituals.
