Le présent ouvrage donne une vue d’ensemble des recherches actuelles consacrées à l’émigration russe en France. Il ose une approche nouvelle en confrontant les émigrés russes réels, dont de nombreux écrivains et poètes russes transitant par la France ou s’y installant, aux figures fictionnelles reflétant les retentissements de ces flux migratoires dans l’imaginaire du pays d’accueil. Le choix inhabituel d’une période très longue, du début du XIXe siècle à nos jours, permet de suivre les continuités et les évolutions, des migrations passagères et cas individuels sous le régime tsariste aux différentes vagues de l’émigration après la Révolution russe. Le recueil se compose d’une trentaine d’articles rédigés par des chercheurs internationaux, spécialistes de littératures russe, française et comparée. Leurs contributions, qui rendent compte de la complexité du phénomène, sont accompagnées de plusieurs témoignages ainsi que de nombreuses illustrations permettant de visualiser aussi bien la réalité que la fiction de l’émigration russe en France

A travers tout le XIXe siècle, l’empire des tsars et ses habitants ont largement inspiré la production littéraire en France. Mais si des recherches se sont intéressées aux récits de voyages, aux journaux et aux correspondances, la Russie en tant qu’objet de la fiction est généralement jugée inintéressante car très éloignée de la réalité. Reposant sur l’analyse d’un corpus de cent textes environs, ce livre se propose de révéler toute la richesse de la Russie et des Russes imaginés par la fiction française du XIXe siècle – un imaginaire effectivement peu fidèle à la réalité russe, mais fortement influencé par le contexte historique des relations franco-russes dont il retrace les hauts et les bas. Trois stades d’évolution se dégagent entre la débâcle napoléonienne de 1812 et la Révolution russe de 1917. Pendant la première moitié du XIXe siècle, l’image de l’autre, du Russe, reprise au XVIIIe siècle se fragmente en plusieurs types. Entre 1855 et 1880 environs, ces types – le tsar, le prince, le Cosaque, le moujik, la femme-martyre et la séductrice – évoluent devant un arrière-plan également stéréotypé et forment un véritable univers imaginaire qu’auteurs et lecteurs identifient comme « russe ». Entre 1880 et 1917 enfin, l’harmonie de l’univers est passagèrement mise en cause par l’intrusion des nihilistes. Cependant, au même moment, de nombreux textes de la décadence recourent aux personnages russes parfaitement excessifs, et la littérature populaire diffuse abondamment le concept de l’âme slave

    Publisher description: The Russian influence took root in the Chinese intellectual tradition that evolved after the Literary Revolution of 1917. When the Chinese communists turned to Russia for their inspiration they also accepted the Russian version of the novel's form and function in society. However, they did not accept it uncritically. Chinese understanding of the arts goes back for thousands of years and thus Chinese intellectuals brought their own kinds of tradition and intelligence to these new arts and political solutions. In this lucid study, the author demonstrates how Chinese writers, guided by Russian authors such as Chekhov, Turgenev, and Andreyev, created works of art that are both original and Chinese. However, he also shows that the familiar heroes of such famous novelists as Lu Xun, Yu Dafu, Mao Dun, and Ba Jin have a strong Russian flavor linked to prototypes in the Russian literary tradition. The author depicts the fortune of Soviet literature and the fate of the intellectual hero in the People's Republic of China. He believes that the humanistic May Fourth intellectual tradition, which inspired enthusiasm for classical Russian literature, has been revived with the publication of works like Dai Houying's Man ah, Man! and Zhao Zhenkai's Waves.

    Galya Diment explores the complicated and fascinating relationship between Vladimir Nabokov and his Cornell colleague Marc Szeftel who, in the estimate of many, served as the prototype for the gentle protagonist of the novel Pnin. She offers astute comments on Nabokov's fictional process in creating Timofey Pnin and addresses hotly debated questions and long-standing riddles in Pnin and its history. Pniniad - the epic of Pnin - begins with Szeftel's early life in Russia and ends with his years in Seattle at the University of Washington, turning pivotally upon the time when Szeftel's and Nabokov's lives intersected at Cornell. Nabokov apparently was both amused by and admiring of the innocence of his historian friend. Szeftel's feelings toward Nabokov were also mixed, ranging from intense disappointment over rebuffed attempts to collaborate with Nabokov on a scholarly study (of a medieval Russian epic) or to write about his work (Lolita), to persistent envy of Nabokov's success and an increasing wistfulness over his own sense of failure. A generous selection of relevant archival materials includes Szeftel's autobiographical writings, his talks and published essays relating to Nabokov, and his correspondence with Nabokov and Roman Jakobson

    Marc Szeftel's odyssey : an alien and an exile -- Colleagues and collaborators : Szeftel and Nabokov at Cornell -- Pnin -- Szeftel in search of success : Lolita -- Life after Nabokov

    Galya Diment explores the complicated and fascinating relationship between Vladimir Nabokov and his Cornell colleague Marc Szeftel who, in the estimate of many, served as the prototype for the gentle protagonist of the novel Pnin. She offers astute comments on Nabokov's fictional process in creating Timofey Pnin and addresses hotly debated questions and long-standing riddles in Pnin and its history. Pniniad - the epic of Pnin - begins with Szeftel's early life in Russia and ends with his years in Seattle at the University of Washington, turning pivotally upon the time when Szeftel's and Nabokov's lives intersected at Cornell. Nabokov apparently was both amused by and admiring of the innocence of his historian friend. Szeftel's feelings toward Nabokov were also mixed, ranging from intense disappointment over rebuffed attempts to collaborate with Nabokov on a scholarly study (of a medieval Russian epic) or to write about his work (Lolita), to persistent envy of Nabokov's success and an increasing wistfulness over his own sense of failure.
