Die vorliegende Aufsatzsammlung geht vor allem dem Einfluss nach, den die Reden Ciceros auf die rhetorische Theorie und Praxis und damit auf Sprache, Stiltheorie und literarische Gestaltung in den romanischen Ländern (Kapitel I: Italien und Frankreich; Kapitel II: Spanien; Kapitel III bei Georg von Trapezunt) und in Deutschland (Kap. VI und VII; Kapitel VII bei Heinrich Bebel) im fünfzehnten und sechzehnten Jahrhundert ausgeübt haben. Im fünften Kapitel wird zum Vergleich der Einfluss des jüngeren Seneca im sechzehnten Jahrhundert miteinbezogen, im vierten Kapitel der Einfluss Quintilians auf die rhetorischen und pädagogischen Ideen des fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts dargestellt, im zehnten der Ciceros auf die Johannes Sturms. Das neunte Kapitel ist den Neuerungen gewidmet, denen Melanchthon die rhetorischen Theorien der Antike und die mittelalterlichen Predigtlehren unterwirft, sowie dem vielfältigen Einfluss dieser Neuerungen, das elfte ergänzend den antiken und mittelalterlichen Traditionen, die im Stadtlob Lodovico Guicciardini's fortleben.     James Biester sees the shift in late Elizabethan England toward a witty, rough, and obscure lyric style-metaphysical wit and strong lines-as a response to the heightened cultural prestige of wonder. That same prestige was demonstrated in the search for strange artifacts and animals to display in the wonder-cabinets of the period.By embracing the genres of satire and epigram, poets of the Elizabethan court risked their chances for political advancement, exposing themselves to the danger of being classified either as malcontents or as jesters who lacked the gravitas required of those in power. John Donne himself recognized both the risks and benefits of adopting the'admirable'style, as Biester shows in his close readings of the First and Fourth Satyres.Why did courtier-poets adopt such a dangerous form of self-representation? The answer, Biester maintains, lies in an extraordinary confluence of developments in both poetics and the interpenetrating spheres of the culture at large, which made the pursuit of wonder through style unusually attractive, even necessary. In a postfeudal but still aristocratic culture, he says, the ability to astound through language performed the validating function that was once supplied by the ability to fight. Combining the insights of the new historicism with traditional literary scholarship, Biester perceives the rise of metaphysical style as a social as well as aesthetic event

    The argument of this study is that the Arcadia, like the High Renaissance painting analysed by Heinrich Wolfflin, is characterized by what may be called 'multiple unity.' The complexity of its organization, whether examined rhetorically in terms of language and thought or tonally through its sequence of events, or narratively through the relation of episode to main plot, is an expression of Sidney's need to control and arrange experience for aesthetic and moral purposes without giving up his perception of its chaos or unmanageability. The nature of Sidney's complex vision, in spite of the apparently pastoral title of Arcadia, is not pastoral but epic. Like much important Renaissance writing, the work is a paedeia, an education of princes, in which the narrative seeks what Sidney considered the paramount object of learning: 'the knowledge of a man's self, in the ethnic and politic consideration.' Professor Lindheim finds that the key to the greater stylistic and narrative complexity of the revised Arcadia lies in the larger and deeper reading of experience that it offers. The New Arcadia is not merely the Old Arcadia heavily ornamented and reassembled in quaint ways, but a radically receonceived work, a re-vision as well as a revision of the earlier version. The radical (root, upwards from the very foundation) coherence of the work is here explored by tracing its rhetoric to an inherent rhetoricism and by abalysing its style stylistically. The Arcadia is a masterpiece of Elizabethan literature because of this integrity: because Sidney's technique, whether stylistic, rhetorical, or narrative, has a direct bearing on his humanist understanding of experience

    Renaissance plays and poetry in England were saturated with the formal rhetorical twists that Latin education made familiar to audiences and readers. Yet a formally educated man like Ben Jonson was unable to make these ornaments come to life in his two classical Roman plays. Garry Wills, focusing his attention on Julius Caesar, here demonstrates how Shakespeare so wonderfully made these ancient devices vivid, giving his characters their own personal styles of Roman speech.In four chapters, devoted to four of the play’s main characters, Wills shows how Caesar, Brutus, Antony, and Cassius each has his own take on the rhetorical ornaments that Elizabethans learned in school. Shakespeare also makes Rome present and animate by casting his troupe of experienced players to make their strengths shine through the historical facts that Plutarch supplied him with. The result is that the Rome English-speaking people carry about in their minds is the Rome that Shakespeare created for them. And that is even true, Wills affirms, for today’s classical scholars with access to the original Roman sources

With Rhetoric in Tooth and Claw, Debra Hawhee explores this unexpected aspect of early thinking about rhetoric, going on from there to examine the enduring presence of nonhuman animals in rhetorical theory and education. In doing so, she not only offers a counter-history of rhetoric but also brings rhetorical studies into dialogue with animal studies, one of the most vibrant areas of interest in humanities today. By removing humanity and human reason from the center of our study of argument, Hawhee frees up space to study and emphasize other crucial components of communication, like energy, bodies, and sensation. Tables of Relationships -- NOTES -- INDEX The argument of this study is that the Arcadia, like the High Renaissance painting analysed by Heinrich Wolfflin, is characterized by what may be called 'multiple unity.' The complexity of its organization, whether examined rhetorically in terms of language and thought or tonally through its sequence of events, or narratively through the relation of episode to main plot, is an expression of Sidney's need to control and arrange experience for aesthetic and moral purposes without giving up his perception of its chaos or unmanageability. The nature of Sidney's complex vision, in spite of the apparently pastoral title of Arcadia, is not pastoral but epic. Like much important Renaissance writing, the work is a paedeia, an education of princes, in which the narrative seeks what Sidney considered the paramount object of learning: 'the knowledge of a man's self, in the ethnic and politic consideration.' Professor Lindheim finds that the key to the greater stylistic and narrative complexity of the revised Arcadia lies in the larger and deeper reading of experience that it offers. The New Arcadia is not merely the Old Arcadia heavily ornamented and reassembled in quaint ways, but a radically receonceived work, a re-vision as well as a revision of the earlier version. The radical (root, upwards from the very foundation) coherence of the work is here explored by tracing its rhetoric to an inherent rhetoricism and by abalysing its style stylistically. The Arcadia is a masterpiece of Elizabethan literature because of this integrity: because Sidney's technique, whether stylistic, rhetorical, or narrative, has a direct bearing on his humanist understanding of experience

That same prestige was demonstrated in the search for strange artifacts and animals to display in the wonder-cabinets of the period.By embracing the genres of satire and epigram, poets of the Elizabethan court risked their chances for political advancement, exposing themselves to the danger of being classified either as malcontents or as jesters who lacked the gravitas required of those in power. John Donne himself recognized both the risks and benefits of adopting the'admirable'style, as Biester shows in his close readings of the First and Fourth Satyres.Why did courtier-poets adopt such a dangerous form of self-representation? The answer, Biester maintains, lies in an extraordinary confluence of developments in both poetics and the interpenetrating spheres of the culture at large, which made the pursuit of wonder through style unusually attractive, even necessary. In a postfeudal but still aristocratic culture, he says, the ability to astound through language performed the validating function that was once supplied by the ability to fight. Combining the insights of the new historicism with traditional literary scholarship, Biester perceives the rise of metaphysical style as a social as well as aesthetic event
