    Nachdem bisher vor allem neue Formen des Bürgerprotestes außerhalb des politischen Systems beschrieben worden sind (z.B. E. Schulak: "Vom Systemtrottel zum Wutbürger", ID-G 41/11), geht es hier um wissenschaftliche Ansätze, die neue Protestbewegung zu begreifen. Der Leiter des Göttinger Instituts für Demokratieforschung, Franz Walter, und seine Mitarbeiter erarbeiten Grundlagen zum Verständnis neuer Formen bürgerschaftlichen Engagements. Sie betrieben empirische Forschung in ganz Deutschland, um die Motivation der Beteiligten zu erkennen. Es geht um Wertewandel, um generationenbedingte und gesellschaftliche Veränderungen. Stuttgart 21, Energiewende, Bildungspolitik, Anti-Euro-Protest sind die wichtigsten Themen, auch neue Kommunikationsformen durch das Internet, mit denen die Bewegungen Mitstreiter gewinnen und aktivieren. Das Buch betritt sowohl inhaltlich als auch methodisch Neuland, indem es exemplarisch Forschungsgänge vorstellt. Da mit Protestbewegungen auch in den nächsten Jahren zu rechnen ist, hat das Buch besondere Brisanz. (2) (Klaus Hohlfeld) Von Hamburg bis München: Diese Studie unternimmt eine Reise quer durch die deutsche Protestlandschaft und interviewt die Aktiven vor Ort. Wofür oder wogegen engagieren sie sich? Was erhoffen sie sich von der Demokratie? Und wie ist ihr Blick auf Politik und Gesellschaft? Herausgekommen ist ein tiefer Einblick in die aktuellen Protestbewegungen und die Gedankenwelt der Aktivisten. Die pauschalisierende Diskussion über die "Wutbürger" erhält damit endlich eine solide wissenschaftliche Grundlage. „Der Band scheint zunächst wenig Neues über die verschiedenen Protestfelder zu bieten. Aufschlussreich sind jedoch der von Franz Walter zusammenfassende Vergleich der empirischen Ergebnisse sowie der demokratietheoretische Ausblick unter dem Titel „Bürgerlichkeit und Protest in der Misstrauensgesellschaft“. Dabei kann Walter durchaus Opfer seiner Formulierungslust werden, die dann dem wissenschaftlich-analytischen Anspruch der Untersuchung zuwiderläuft - so wenn er von einer „wabernden, dabei sediert wirkenden Misstrauensgesellschaft“ spricht. Hervorstechend ist zunächst die Beobachtung, dass eine Grundbedingung für das Protest-Engagement der Aktivisten ihr Zeitbudget ist. Protest braucht Zeit. „Insofern findet man in der Trägergruppe des Protests auffällig viele Hausmänner, Teilzeitangestellte, Freiberufler, Schüler, Pastoren, Lehrer und - ganz besonders Vorruheständler, Rentner und Pensionäre.“ Die älteren Bundesbürger dominieren“ (FAZ)

    During the 1970s, London-based photographers joined together to form collectives which engaged with local and international political protest in cities across the UK. This book is a survey of the radical community photography that these collectives produced.0The photographers derived inspiration from counterculture while finding new ways to produce, publish and exhibit their work. They wanted to do things in their own way, to create their own magazines and exhibition networks, and to take their politicised photographic and textual commentary on the re-imagination of British cities in the post-war period into community centres, laundrettes, Working Men's Clubs, polytechnics, nurseries - anywhere that would have them. The laminated panel exhibitions were sufficiently robust, when packed into a laundry box, to withstand circulation round the country on British Rail's Red Star parcel network.0Through archival research, interviews and newly discovered photographic and ephemeral material, this tells the story of the Hackney Flashers Collective, Exit Photography Group, Half Moon Photography Workshop, producers of Camerawork magazine, and the community darkrooms, North Paddington Community Darkroom and Blackfriars Photography Project. It reveals how they created a 'history from below', positioning themselves outside of established mainstream media, and aiming to make the invisible visible by bringing the disenfranchised and marginalised into the political debate

    Why did people mobilize for the Arab Spring? While existing research has focused on the roles of authoritarian regimes, oppositional structures, and social grievances in the movement, these explanations fail to address differences in the behavior of individuals, overlooking the fact that even when millions mobilized for the Arab Spring, the majority of the population stayed at home. To investigate this puzzle, this book traces the reasoning processes by which individuals decided to join the uprisings, or to refrain from doing so. Drawing from original ethnographic interviews with protestors and non-protestors in Egypt and Morocco, Dornschneider utilizes qualitative methods and computational modeling to identify the main components of reasoning processes: Beliefs, inferences (directed connections between beliefs), and decisions. Bridging the psychology literature on reasoning and the political science literature on protest, this book systematically traces how decisions about participating in the Arab Spring were made. It shows that decisions to join the uprisings were "hot", meaning they were based on positive emotions, while decisions to stay at home were "cool", meaning they were based on safety considerations. Hot Contention, Cool Abstention adds to the extensive literature on political uprisings, offering insights on how and why movements start, stall, and evolve.

Resistance in the eighteenth century was extensive, and the act of protest to foment meaningful societal change took on many forms from the circulation of ballads, swearing of oaths, to riots and work stoppages, or the composition of essays, novels, posters, caricatures, political cartoons as well as theater and opera. The contributors to this volume examine the causes of protest as well as the broad ways in which common artifacts such as poles, trees, drums, conchs, and songs acted as flashpoints for conflict and vehicles of protest. Rather than approaching the topic with strict geographical, temporal and structural limitations, this book focuses on the time period from an international perspective and an interdisciplinary scope. Because of its wide scope, this book is an important contribution to the subject that will be of interest to both faculty and students of the history of protest, resistance and the changes that these forces bring as it also reminds us that the protests of today are rooted in historical resistances of the past"--

    Departing from the existing literature, The Roots of Engagement examines the individual-level factors that shape a person's opinions over resource extraction. It looks at what makes some individuals accept extractive activities close to their homes, while other individuals strongly reject them. Moisés Arce, Michael S. Hendricks, and Marc S. Polizzi find that an individual's level of social engagement--defined by a person's participation in local organizations--is critical for understanding these differences. Based on three original public opinion surveys and interviews conducted in Tía María in Peru, Fuleni in South Africa, and Rancho Grande in Nicaragua, The Roots of Engagement is the first book to measure social engagement in organizations and its connection to attitudes about extraction and development.     More than a decade after the birth of contemporary social movements in the Middle East and North Africa scholars are asking what these movements have achieved and how we should evaluate their lasting legacies. The quiet encroachments of MENA counterrevolutionary forces in the post-Arab Spring era have contributed to the revival of an outdated Orientalist discourse of Middle East exceptionalism, implying that the region's culture is exceptionally immune to democratic movements, values, and institutions. This volume, inspired by critical post-colonial/decolonial studies, and interdisciplinary perspectives of social movement theories, gender studies, Islamic studies, and critical race theory, challenges and demystifies the myth of "MENA Exceptionalism". Composted of three sections, the book first places MENA in the larger global context and sheds light on the impact of geopolitics on the current crises, showing how a postcolonial critique better explains the crisis of democratic social movements and the resilience of authoritarianism. The second section focuses on the unfinished projects of contemporary MENA social movements and their quest for freedom, social justice, and human dignity. Contributors examine specific cases of post-Islamist movements, the Arab youth, student, and other popular non-violent movements. In the final section, the book problematizes the exceptionalist idea of gender passivity and women's exclusion, which reduces the reality of gender injustice to some eternal and essentialized Muslim/MENA mindset. Contributors address this theory by placing gender as an independent category of thought and action, demonstrating the quest for gender justice movements in MENA, and providing contexts to the cases of gender injustice to challenge simplistic, ahistorical and culturalist assumptions.
