    “What do people want to do when they write − and what do they actually do?” (Perrin 2003, 825). This question in the introduction to an issue of the Journal of Pragmatics has contributed to shifting the focus of writing research from cognitive to social and pragmatic aspects of text production, forgrounding the relevance of writers’ pragmatic competence. Text processes and production are influenced by writers’ cultural and biographical background, (professional) role in the respective communicative setting, the concrete communicative situation, as well as the communicative patterns of the community of practice (Wenger, 1998). At the same time, text evaluation and text impact depend on readers’ perception and involvement. These processes, driving and driven by language use in sociocultural contexts, trigger the topics and foci of research in pragmatics (Verschueren 2001). Research so far in this field has provided evidence of pragmatic competence as a key sub-competence of writing and writers (Konstantinidou, Hoefele & Kruse, 2016). In our panel, we focus on pragmatic aspects of writing in specific sociocultural context, social settings, and situations of language use. We investigate both the development and teaching of pragmatic competence in multilingual and professional settings. By doing so, we reflect on the relation of pragmatic competence with the quality of both writing processes and text products and discuss the challenges of measuring pragmatic competence using automated assessment methods.

    "This book combines explanatory breadth with analytical delicacy. It offers a comprehensive study of a broad array of traditional figures of speech by systematizing linguistic evidence of the cognitive processes underlying them. Such processes are explicitly linked to different communicative consequences, thus bringing together pragmatics and cognition. This type of study has allowed the authors to provide new definitions for all the figures while making their dependency relations fully explicit. For example, hypallage, antonomasia, anthimeria, and merism are studied as variants of metonymy, and analogy, paragon, and allegory as variants of metaphor. An important feature of the book is its special emphasis on the combinations of figures of speech into conceptually more complex configurations. Finally, the book accounts for the principles that regulate the felicity of figurative expressions. The result is a broad integrative framework for the analysis of figurative language grounded in the relationship between pragmatics and cognition"--

    Satire, Humor and the Construction of Identities' conveys how satire can contribute to the construction of social subjects' identities. It attempts to provide a theoretical ground for a novel understanding of the relationship between satire and identity by finding their common denominator, namely opposition, in order to explain the mechanism through which satire can form identity. After establishing the role of opposition in satire and identity construction through a detailed analysis of various theories, it will be argued that satire can contribute to the construction of racial, ethnic, national, religious, and gender identities. Several examples from British, Persian and ancient Roman literary traditions and different epochs illustrate the theoretical discussions. The prevalence of satire and the challenges that identity has encountered in our contemporary world guarantee the significance of this study and its socio-political implications

    This book offers a cognitive-pragmatic, and specifically relevance-theoretic, analysis of different types of humorous discourse, together with the inferential strategies that are at work in the processing of such discourses. The book also provides a cognitive pragmatics description of how addressees obtain humorous effects. Although the inferences at work in the processing of normal, non-humorous discourses are the same as those employed in the interpretation of humour, in the latter case these strategies (and also the accessibility of contextual information) are predicted and manipulated by the speaker (or writer) for the sake of generating humorous effects. The book covers aspects of research on humour such as the incongruity-resolution pattern, jokes and stand-up comedy performances. It also offers an explanation of why ironies are sometimes labelled as humorous, and proposes a model for the translation of humorous discourses, an analysis of humour in multimodal discourses such as cartoons and advertisements, and a brief exploration of possible tendencies in relevance-theoretic research on conversational humour.
