    Katherine Mansfield's contemporaries knew her primarily as a contributor to magazines and periodicals. In 1922, for instance, Wyndham Lewis described her as 'the famous New Zealand Mag.-story writer'. This book provides the first in-depth study of Mansfield's engagement in periodical culture, examining her contributions to the political weekly The New Age, the avant-garde little magazine Rhythm and the literary journal The Athenaeum. Reading these writings against the editorial strategies and professional cultures of each periodical, Chris Mourant situates Mansfield's work within networks of production and uncovers the many ways in which she engaged with the writings of others and responded to the political, aesthetic and social contexts of early twentieth-century periodical culture. By examining Mansfield's ambivalent position as a colonial woman writer working both within and against the London literary establishment, in particular, this book provides a new perspective on Mansfield as a 'colonial-metropolitan modernist' and proto-postcolonial writer

    Die "Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung" ist die vergessene Größe der deutschen Literaturkritik um 1800. Erinnert werden bis heute nur ihre namhaften Beiträger (Kant, Fichte, Schiller, A. W. Schlegel) und ihre Vermittlerfunktion für den Kantianismus. Verwischt ist dagegen ihre eigene Kontur als progressives und führendes Organ wissenschaftlicher und ästhetischer Kritik. Alternativ zur personenorientierten Forschung bietet dieser Band eine strukturelle Beschreibung der A. L. Z. und ihrer "Organisation der Kritik": Anonymität, Vollständigkeit, Unparteilichkeit sind die Leitbegriffe eines aufklärerischen Kritikkonzeptes, das sich hier im Medium Zeitschrift mit universalem Anspruch institutionalisiert. Damit ist die A. L. Z. nicht nur der epochale Kontrasthintergrund, sondern auch die Voraussetzung für die romantische Kunst der Kritik in Deutschland. Zusammen mit den konzeptionellen werden rechts-, wissenschafts- und wirtschaftsgeschichtliche Aspekte dieses einflussreichsten Rezensionsjournals des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts behandelt.     "The Fateful Lightning is the second volume of Diffley's trilogy on Civil War magazine fiction, called Making War Civil. Where her first book of the trilogy titled, Where My Heart is Turning Ever (UGA Press, 1992) charted the role of magazine fiction from the Northeast in "grounding the rites of citizenship" following the end of the Civil War, in Fateful Lightning, Diffley traces the sectional conflicts in a postwar nation, and how region shaped the political agendas of these post-war editorials. Diffley argues that the journals she looks at in this project present stories that give "unpredictable" results of sectional conflict and commemorate the Civil War differently from the Northeast publishing establishments. Diffley threads this through her analysis of four literary journals-the Baltimore's Southern Magazine, Charlotte's The Land We Love, Chicago's Lakeside Monthly, and San Francisco's Overland Monthly. Diffley uses a method of literary analysis that looks at not only on what is present in the text but through historically informed context, gleans cultural meanings from what the stories also "filter out." Coupling this literary analysis with city studies, Diffley's innovative approach demonstrate how these editorials offer, in her words, "varying gauges of continued political unrest, rising social opportunity, and dickering commemorative investments as Reconstruction began to unfold.""--
