Through study of female writers of the 18th-century novel, Kukkonen explores how literary texts draw on embodied experience and the lived reality of literature and reading. She approaches embodied style through the approach of 4E cognition, which understands the mind as embodied, embedded, extended, and enactive in the environment. The work breaks new ground in showing the promise of 4E cognition for cognitive poetics, and how the fiction-writing develops diverse repertoires of embodied language for the history of the novel.

"Samuel Beckett's private writings and public work show his deep interest in the workings of the human mind. Samuel Beckett and Psychology is an innovative study of the author's engagement with key concepts in early experimental psychology and rapidly developing scientific ideas about perception, attention and mental imagery. Through innovative new readings of Beckett's later dramatic and prose works, the book reveals the links between his aesthetic method and the methodologies of experimental psychology through the 20th century. Covering important later works including Happy Days, Not I and Footfalls, Samuel Beckett and Psychology sheds important new light on Beckett's depictions of the workings of the embodied mind"-- Introduction: Literary Experiments and the Work of Samuel Beckett -- Experimental Transitions -- Attention and Speech Perception in Not I -- Face Reading and Attentional Management in That Time -- Inattention in Footfalls -- Beckett and the Mental Image -- Percept and Image in Nohow On -- Conclusion: Experimental Beckett.

For centuries, poets have been ensnared - as one of their number, Andrew Marvell put it - by the beauty of flowers. Then, from the middle of the eighteenth century onward, that enjoyment was enriched by a surge of popular interest in botany. Besides exploring the relationship between poetic and scientific responses to the green world within the context of humanity's changing concepts of its own place in the ecosphere, Molly Mahood considers the part that flowering plants played in the daily lives and therefore in the literary work of a number of writers who could all be called poet-botanists: Erasmus Darwin, George Crabbe, John Clare, John Ruskin and D. H. Lawrence. A concluding chapter looks closely at the meanings, old or new, that plants retained or obtained in the violent twentieth century

The focus of this study is on the working of Milton’s sensibilities and the reader’s response to the materials of the poem. Professor Shumaker demonstrates the special resonance Milton gave to Paradise Lost through his development of its mythic quality and through the emotive patterns in the poem. Shumaker describes the effect on the reader’s subconscious responses of Milton’s choice of visual and auditory images. Underlying the treatment is an assumption that during the act of composition the poet’s mind is often stirred to its depths and registers with astonishing fidelity what is happening on all the levels of his psyche, conscious and unconscious.Originally published in 1967.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Through study of female writers of the eighteenth-century novel, Kukkonen explores how literary texts draw on embodied experience and the lived reality of literature and reading. Neuro-narratology -- Spatial perception, negative emotions, and narratives -- Sense perceptions and representation of consciousness in Vladimir Nabokov's Invitation to a beheading and Poe's 'The pit and the pendulum' -- Storytelling with Tourette's Syndrome in Jonathan Kethem's Motherless Brooklyn -- Narrative space and motion(lessness) in 'The ivory acrobat' -- Narrative experience as kinetosis for the reader : spatial perception in The body artist -- Disorientation, dislocation, and disnarration in Mark Z. Danielewski's House of leaves. -- Representation of dissociation and negative emotions in Haruki Murakami's "Sleep". "This book encourages cross-disciplinary dialogues toward introducing a new framework for neuro-narratology, expanding on established theory within cognitive narratology to more fully encompass the different faculties involved in the reading process. In order to investigate narrative cognition, the book traces the ways in which cognitive patterns of embodiment - and the neural connections that comprise them - in the reading process are translated into patterns in narrative fiction. Drawing theories of episodic memories and nonvisual perception of space, Farmasi draws on theories of episodic memories and nonvisual perception of space in analyzing a range of narratives from 20th century prose. The first set of analyses shines a light on perception and emotion in narrative discourses and the construction of storyworlds, while the second foregrounds the reader's experience. The volume makes the case for the fact that narratives need to be understood as dynamic elements of the interaction between mind, body, and environment, generating new insights and inspiring further research. This book will appeal to scholars interested in narrative theory, literary studies, cognitive science, neuroscience, and philosophy"--

"This book examines Thomas Hardy's writing in both prose and poetry, focusing on issues of perception, 'being', class and environment. It illustrates the ways in which Hardy represents a social world which serves as a 'horizon' for the individual and explores the dialectic between the perceptible world and human consciousness. Ebbatson demonstrates how, in Hardy's oeuvre, modern life becomes alienated from its roots in rural life -- individual freedom is achieved in works like Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure or The Woodlanders at the cost of personal insecurity and a deepening sense of homelessness. However, this development occurs against the marginalisation of dialect forms of speech. This book also explores how Hardy's impressionist vision serves to undermine the prevailing conventions of plot structure." --
