After a period of disfavour, the literature is returned today in the classes of foreign language as authentic document. If this position is not any more disputed in the theoretical speeches, in the facts, numerous teachers still put away this teaching aid which conveys almost in spite of him, numerous allusions. To extend the literary corpus and introduce into the class of the rewarding documents and presenting numerous advantages, we suggest using the term « literature » in the plural, including paralittératures, the French-speaking literature or the « classical » literature. This opening can motivate in particular the learners by the use of less marked texts, destroy the sacred aura of the usign of the literary texts or still reflect more the current market of the book. Furthermore, the qualitative and thematic variety of the literatures is a factor which allows adapting the support of learning at the level of the learner or of group-class. The literatures being very vast, we paid our attention on a genre in particular: the police novel, which entered recently the French school programs. We propose a comparative study of a corpus constitued by urban descriptions on one hand of realistic novels, and on the other hand police novels of the type urban whodunit. We proceed then to diverse experience to validate the acquisition by the learners of a generic skill participating in the lectoriale skill

"From the 1890s through the 1920s, the best-selling fiction of Ralph Connor, Robert Stead, Nellie McClung, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Arthur Stringer was internationally recognized. In this intriguing cultural history of the conception, production, and reception of popular fiction, Clarence Karr challenges the common assumption that best-sellers are a conservative cultural influence, reflecting and promoting traditional values. By focusing on a society and its cultural leaders at a period when they were coming to grips with modernity, Karr provides a new perspective on culture and the interaction between readers and popular authors." "Authors and Audiences reveals the cultural milieu that gave rise to the golden age of hardcover fiction. Karr describes the relationships between authors, literary agents, and publishers in Toronto, London, New York, and other centers; examines the relationship between authors and the movie industry; and discusses the reception of fiction by critics and readers. This is the first Canadian study to use fan mail to highlight readers' interactions with author and text. Karr places the authors' careers in an international setting and shows how, despite living a considerable distance from the leading cultural production centers of New York and London, they became internationally recognized and read."--BOOK JACKET

This collection offers a revisionist picture of modernism. This group of prominent scholars including Havey Teres, David Bromwich, A. Walton Litz, Louis Menand, and Lucy McDiarmid consider the major modernist writers who are customarily treated as if they wrote in different eras and different worlds: the "epicene" high modernists (such as Yeats, Joyce, Eliot and Woolf) and the more "popular" low modernists (including Hardy, Shaw and Wells), and bring these writers into critical proximity with one another

Like academic theorists, who are trained in a tradition of philosophical and political skepticism that challenges all orthodoxies, the vernacular theorists McLaughlin identifies display a lively and healthy alertness to contradiction and propaganda. They are not passive victims of ideology but active questioners of the belief systems that have power over their lives. Their theoretical work arises from the circumstances they confront on the job, in the family, in popular culture. And their questioning of established institutions, McLaughlin contends, is essential and healthy, for it clarifies the purpose and strategies of institutions and justifies the existence of cultural practices. Street Smarts and Critical Theory leads us through eye-opening explorations of social activism in the Southern Christian anti-pornography movement, fan critiques in the 'zine scene, New Age narratives of healing and transformation, the methodical manipulations of the advertising profession, and vernacular theory in the whole-language movement. Emphasizing that theory is itself a pervasive cultural practice, McLaughlin calls on academic institutions to recognize and develop the theoretical strategies that students bring into the classroom Thomas McLaughlin argues that critical theory - raising serious, sustained questions about cultural practice and ideology - is practiced not only by an academic elite but also by savvy viewers of sitcoms and tv news, by Elvis fans and Trekkies, by labor organizers and school teachers, by the average person in the street. - Like academic theorists, who are trained in a tradition of philosophical and political skepticism that challenges all orthodoxies, the vernacular theorists McLaughlin identifies display a lively and healthy alertness to contradiction and propaganda.
