Svenja Ludwig untersucht die wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen Tanz, Lithografie und Fotografie mit Blick auf die Darstellungsmöglichkeiten des ephemeren Tanzes, die kulturelle Praxis der Bilder und den künstlerischen Status von Plakaten und Fotografien und eröffnet damit einen neuen Zugang zum Werk Toulouse-Lautrecs

The new idea of perforMemory arises within a lively blend of interdisciplinary theory, interviews, performance analysis, and personal storytelling. Scholar and artist Layla Zami traces unexpected pathways, inviting the reader to move gracefully across disciplines, histories, and geographies

It is the first book to present a broad-ranging analysis of cultural dance in Australia. Topics include adaptation of dance customs within a post-migration context, multicultural festivals, prominent performers, historiographies and archives, and the relative positionings of cultural and Western theatrical dance genres. The book offers a decolonized appraisal of dance in Australia, critiquing past and present praxes and offering suggestions for the future. Overall, it underscores the highly variegated nature of the Australian dance landscape and advocates for greater recognition of amateur community dance practices. Cultural Dance in Australia makes a substantial contribution to the catalogue of work about immigrants and cultural dance styles that continue to be preserved in Australia. This book will be of interest to scholars of dance, performance studies, migration studies and transnationalism. Jeanette Mollenhauer researches immigrants' dance practices in Australia, focusing on cultural identity, transnationalism and multicultural performance. Jeanette is also Vice-President of Folk Dance Australia and a community dance teacher. She serves on the International Council for Traditional Music's Archives Committee and her first book was Dancing at the Southern Crossroads (2020)

    "This study positions four musicals and their associated artists as mobilizers of defiant joy in relation to trauma and healing in Puerto Rico. The book argues that the historical trajectory of these musicals has formed a canon of works that have reiterated, resisted or transformed experiences of trauma through linguistic, ritual, and geographic interventions. These traumas may be disaster-related, migrant-related, colonial or patriarchal. Bilingualism and translation, ritual action, and geographic space engage moments of trauma (natural disaster, incarceration, death) and healing (community celebration, grieving, emancipation) in these works. The musicals considered are West Side Story (1957, 2009, 2019); The Capeman (1998); In the Heights (2008); and Hamilton (2015). Central to this argument is that each of the musicals discussed is tied to Puerto Rico, either through the representation of Puerto Rican characters and stories, or through the Puerto Rican positionality of its creators. The author moves beyond the musicals to consider Lin-Manuel Miranda as an embodied site of healing, that has been met with controversy, as well as posthurricane Maria relief efforts led by Miranda on the island and from a distance. In each of the works discussed, acts of belonging shape notions of survivorship and witness. This book also opens a dialogue between these musicals and the work of island-based artists Y no había luz, that has served as sites of first response to disaster.     "This book provides a thorough analysis of terpsichorean lexis in Renaissance drama. Besides considering not only the Shakespearean canon, but also the Bard's contemporaries (e.g. dramatists as John Marston and Ben Jonson among the most refined Renaissance dance aficionados), the originality of this volume is highlighted in both its methodology and structure. As far as methods of analysis are concerned, corpora such as the VEP Early Modern Drama collection and EEBO, and corpus analysis tools such as #LancsBox, AntConc or the Sketch Engine software are used in order to offer the widest range of examples possible from early modern plays and provide co-textual references for each dance. Examples from Renaissance playwrights are fundamental for the analysis of connotative meanings of the dances listed and their performative, poetic and metaphoric role in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century drama.     What does it take to cross a border, and what does it take to belong? Sandra Noeth examines the entangled experiences of borders and of collectivity through the perspective of bodies. By dramaturgical analyses of contemporary artistic work from Lebanon and Palestine, Noeth shows how borders and collectivity are constructed and negotiated through choreographic, corporeal, movement-based, and sensory strategies and processes. This interdisciplinary study is made urgent by social and political transformations across the Middle East and beyond around 2011. It puts to the fore the residual, body-bound structural effects of borders and of collectivity and proceeds to develop notions of agency and responsibility that are immanently bound to bodies in relation.

In der Barockzeit entstand daraus eine Grundhaltung für den Tanz: Im Luftschritt pas grave wird der Körper kurz vor dem Bodenkontakt angehoben. Daraus entwickelte sich das Ideal der schwerelosen Ballerina, von dem sich Tanzschaffende seit der Moderne wiederum distanzieren. Pina Bauschs Tanzoper Orpheus und Eurydike wertet die Dichotomien schwer/männlich vs. leicht/weiblich um: Mühevoll trägt Orpheus seine Schattenfrau Eurydike durch den Hades. Mit dem Schweren Schweben entwickelt Mariama Diagne eine Denkfigur, die das Schweben in der europäischen Kulturgeschichte aufspürt und neu kontextualisiert. In »heavy floating«, the author develops a figure of thought that traces and re-contextualizes floating people in European dance and cultural history.

    Gabriele Klein entwickelt eine neue Sichtweise auf die künstlerische Arbeit des Tanztheaters Wuppertal. Die Erarbeitung der Stücke, ihre Aufführung, Weitergabe und Rezeption werden als ein reziproker, durch komplexe Übersetzungsprozesse gestalteter Zusammenhang charakterisiert. Erstmals rücken die internationalen Ko-Produktionen und die mit ihnen verbundene künstlerische Forschung in den Fokus. Umfangreiche Interviews mit Tänzer*innen, Mitarbeiter*innen und Publikum sowie ethnografische Studien an den ko-produzierenden Orten stützen die Untersuchung empirisch. Den theoretischen Rahmen bildet eine Praxeologie der kulturellen und ästhetischen Übersetzung, die hier als ein zentrales Konzept der Tanz- und Kunstforschung vorgestellt wird.

    What does it take to cross a border, and what does it take to belong? Sandra Noeth examines the entangled experiences of borders and of collectivity through the perspective of bodies. By dramaturgical analyses of contemporary artistic work from Lebanon and Palestine, Noeth shows how borders and collectivity are constructed and negotiated through choreographic, corporeal, movement-based, and sensory strategies and processes. This interdisciplinary study is made urgent by social and political transformations across the Middle East and beyond around 2011. It puts to the fore the residual, body-bound structural effects of borders and of collectivity and proceeds to develop notions of agency and responsibility that are immanently bound to bodies in relation

Im intensiven Dialog mit Schrift- und Bildtheorien analysiert er herausragende Arbeiten postmoderner und zeitgenössischer Choreographie, die Tanzbewegungen als ephemere Einschreibung im Raum organisieren. Er zeigt exemplarisch auf, wie diese Körperfigurationen als Veränderung eines imaginären Schriftbildes betrachtet werden können.     In this ceaselessly questioning book, acclaimed African American dancer, choreographer, and director Bill T. Jones reflects on his art and life as he describes the genesis of Story/Time, a recent dance work produced by his company and inspired by the modernist composer and performer John Cage. Presenting personally revealing stories, richly illustrated with striking color photographs of the work's original stage production, and featuring a beautiful, large-format design, the book is a work of art in itself.Like the dance work, Story/Time the book is filled with telling vignettes-about Jones's childhood as part of a large, poor, Southern family that migrated to upstate New York; about his struggles to find a place for himself in a white-dominated dance world; and about his encounters with notable artists and musicians. In particular, Jones examines his ambivalent attraction to avant-garde modernism, which he finds liberating but also limiting in its disregard for audience response.
