An Exposition of the Buddhist Philosophy of Protecting Life and Animal Production Chinese Environmental Humanities showcases contemporary ecocritical approaches to Chinese culture and aesthetic production as practiced in China itself and beyond. As the first collaborative environmental humanities project of this kind, this book brings together sixteen scholars from a diverse range of disciplines, including literary and cultural studies, philosophy, ecocinema and ecomedia studies, religious studies, minority studies, and animal or multispecies studies. The fourteen chapters are conceptually framed through the lens of the Chinese term huanjing (environment or “encircling the surroundings”), a critical device for imagining the aesthetics and politics of place-making, or “the practice of environing at the margin.” The discourse of environing at the margins facilitates consideration of the modes, aesthetics, ethics, and politics of environmental inclusion and exclusion, providing a lens into the environmental thinking and practices of the world’s most populous society

This book examines the reception of British Romanticism in India and East Asia (including Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan). Building on recent scholarship on 'Global Romanticism', this book develops a model for a more reciprocal and cross-cultural model of scholarship, in which 'Asian Romanticism' is recognised as an important part of the Romantic literary tradition. It explores the connections between canonical British Romantic authors (including Austen, Blake, Byron, Shelley, and Wordsworth) and prominent Asian writers (including Nehru, Ōe, Sōseki, Tagore and Zhimo). In addition, this study challenges Eurocentric assumptions about literary reception and periodisation, focusing on how, from the early nineteenth century, British Romanticism was creatively adapted and transformed by writers in a number of Asian nations Introduction -- British Romanticism in Asia, 1820-1950: Modernity, Tradition, and Transformation in India and East Asia -- Section I: Romanticism in Asia: Cross-Cultural Networks -- The News from India: Emma Roberts and the Construction of Late Romanticism -- Flora Japonica: Linnaean Connections Between Britain and Japan During the Romantic Period -- An ‘Exot’ Teacher of Romanticism in Japan: Lafcadio Hearn and the Literature of the Ghostly -- On William Empson’s Romantic Legacy in China -- Section II: Colonialism and Resistance -- Romanticism in Colonial Korea: Coterie Literary Journals and the Emergence of Modern Poetry in the Early 1920s -- "Truth in Beauty and Beauty in Truth": Rabindranath Tagore’s Appropriation of John Keats’ "Ode on a Grecian Urn" (1819) -- Romantic, Rebel, and Reactionary: The Metamorphosis of Byron in Twentieth-Century China -- Section III: Nature, Aesthetics, and Translation -- Nature and the Natural: Translating Wordsworth’s "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" (1807/15) into Chinese -- "With Sidewise Crab-Walk Western Writing": Tradition and Modernity in Shimazaki Tōson and Natsume Sōseki -- Of Ponds, Lakes, and the Sea: Shōyō, Shakespeare, and Romanticism -- Section IV: Bodies and the Cosmos -- Nogami Yaeko’s Adaptations of Austen Novels: Allegorising Women’s Bodies -- The Romantic Skylark in Taiwanese Literature: Shelleyan Religious Scepticism in Xu Zhimo and Yang Mu -- A Japanese Blake: Embodied Visions in William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790) and Tezuka Osamu’s Phoenix (1967-88) -- "Rouse up O Young Men of the New Age!": Ōe Kenzaburō and William Blake on bodies, biopolitics, and the imagination

The Doors of Posthuman Sensory Perception in Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West This book is the sequel to Britain Through Muslim Eyes and examines contemporary novelistic representations of and by Muslims in Britain. It builds on studies of the five senses and ‘sensuous geographies’ of postcolonial Britain, and charts the development since 1988 of a fascinating and important body of fiction by Muslim-identified authors. It is a selective literary history, exploring case-study novelistic representations of and by Muslims in Britain to allow in-depth critical analysis through the lens of sensory criticism. It argues that, for authors of Muslim heritage in Britain, writing the senses is often a double-edged act of protest. Some of the key authors excoriate a suppression or cover-up of non-heteronormativity and women’s rights that sometimes occurs in Muslim communities. Yet their protest is especially directed at secular culture’s ocularcentrism and at successive British governments’ efforts to surveil, control, and suppress Muslim bodies

This book critically examines the postcolonial canon, questioning both the disproportionate attention to texts written in English and their overuse in attempts to understand the postcolonial condition. The author addresses the non-representation of Indian literature in theory, and the inadequacy of generalizing postcolonial experiences and subjectivities based on literature produced in one language (English). It argues that, while postcolonial scholarship has successfully challenged Eurocentrism, it is now time to extend the dimensions beyond Anglophone and Francophone literatures to include literatures in other languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Tagalog, and Swahili 1. This edited book focuses on the role of different types of pedagogical solutions in the acquisition of the Japanese grammatical system by reviewing, assessing and measuring current theory and research. Findings from this research have implications for the way Japanese grammar is learned and taught in a classroom context. The editors and contributors address a number of questions around the role of Japanese grammar learning and teaching such as: what is the role of instruction in Japanese second language acquisition? What are the main findings of empirical research into the acquisition of Japanese grammar? Is any one particular pedagogical intervention or solution to the teaching of Japanese grammar more effective than another? What pedagogical options do we have for the teaching of Japanese grammar? This book offers a unique insight into its practical implications for Japanese language learning and teaching for applied linguists, researchers, language teaching professionals and curriculum developers alike. Alessandro G. Benati is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies at the University of Greenwich, UK, and Director of the Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education (CAROLE). He holds a PhD in second language acquisition from the University of Greenwich and is internationally known for his research in second language learning and teaching, with special emphasis on processing instruction. Sayoko Yamashita is Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Jissen Women’s University, Japan. She holds an Ed.D, and specializes in applied linguistics, SLA, and pragmatics. Her publications include Six Measures in JSL Pragmatics, “Politeness in classrooms-comparison between JSL and EFL classrooms” in Selected Research Papers in Applied Linguistics, and “Investigating interlanguage pragmatics ability” in Investigating Pragmatics in Foreign Language Learning, Teaching and Testing - Introduction -- PART I: Theoretical Perspectives -- Chapter 1. Drawing on Buddhist thought and offering, in part, a response to Edward Said's classic work in the same field, Translating Orients re-interprets Orientalism and shows the vital presence of the Orient in twentieth century and contemporary world literatures. Defining Orients as neither subjects nor objects but realities that emerge through translational acts, Timothy Weiss argues that all interpretation can be viewed as translations that contain utopian as well as ideological aspects. The translational approach to literary and cultural interpretations adds depth to Weiss's analysis of works by Jorge Luis Borges, Paul Bowles, V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, and Kazua Ishiguro, among others.Weiss examines texts that reference Asian, North African, or Middle Eastern societies and their imaginaries, and, equally important, engage questions of individual and communal identity that issue from transformative encounters. Interpretation is thus viewed as an act that orients, mapping the world not in the sense of delineating a pre-given form, location, or order, but rather as a charting of its emergence and possibilities. In addressing the principal challenges of contemporary critical thinking, fundamentalism, and groundlessness, Weiss puts forward new concepts of identity and citizenship in the reinterpretation of Orientalism.

Weaving together careful readings of plays and reviews, memoirs and interviews, biographies and critical essays, Acting Like a Woman in Modern Japan traces the emergence of the first generation of modern actresses in Japan, a nation in which male actors had long dominated the public stage. What emerges is a colorful and complex picture of modern Japanese gender, theater, and nationhood. Using the lives and careers of two dominant actresses from the Meiji era, Kano reveals the fantasies, fears, and impact that women on stage created in Japan as it entered the twentieth century

At the heart of this book is a spectral theory of world literature that draws on Edward Said, Aamir Mufti, Jacques Derrida and world-systems theory to assess how the field produces local literature as an "other" that haunts its universalising, assimilative imperative with the force of the uncanny.

"Is memory always a reliable register of the past? Is trauma a concept that can be translated across cultures? Can pain and affect have global applicability and utility for literary and cultural analysis? Do the approaches and perspectives generated by literary and cultural texts hold purchase for social, political, and historical interventions in the 21st century? Contemporary Asia is a diverse and sweeping region throughout which the traumatic legacies of colonialism persist and military regimes and dictatorships have produced untold human suffering. Countless loss of lives have been caused by revolution, civil war, and genocide. A global pandemic, natural catastrophes, closed borders, and acute xenophobia render existing social and political tensions even more volatile today. The insights of trauma theory for the analysis of literary and cultural representations in Asia and its diasporas and the enrichment of trauma studies by Asian texts are two imperative research fields. Memory, Trauma, Asia broadens the scope of memory and trauma studies by critically meditating on whether existing concepts of memory and trauma are sustainable in relation to the histories, present states, and futures of the non-Occidental world. Explore the complex and surprising intersections of literature, history, ethics, affect, and social justice across the region through its wide-ranging but closely comparative focus on geo-political sites across East, South, and Southeast Asia. This volume unite perspectives on both dominant and marginalized sites in the broad Asian continent, including Cambodia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. As such, it is the first of its kind to comparatively argue for an intersectional mode of memory and trauma studies that centers the Orient rather than pushing it to the periphery of the Occident. This volume will appeal to scholars, students, teachers, and readers interested in memory and trauma studies, comparative Asian studies, diaspora and postcolonial studies, global studies, and women, gender, and sexuality studies in the 21st century"--

"In this ambitious volume, Yunfei Bai delves into the creative adaptations of classical Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan literary texts by four renowned nineteenth- and early twentieth-century authors in France and Argentina: Théophile Gautier, Stéphane Mallarmé, Victor Segalen, and Jorge Luis Borges. Without any knowledge of the source languages, the authors crafted their own French and Spanish retellings based on received translations of these Asian works. Rewriting the Orient not only explores the so far untapped translation-rewriting continuum to trace the pivotal role of Orientalism in the formation of a singular corpus of world literature that goes beyond the Anglophone canon, but also sheds light on a wide range of innovative discursive strategies that readily challenge traditional notions of cultural appropriation"--
