Viele sind Mitglied in einem Blasorchester oder einer Blaskapelle, und ihr ehrenamtliches Engagement leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur regionalen (Musik-)Kultur. Doch was ist die Motivation dahinter? In einer Online-Befragung von 214 hessischen Amateurmusikern und 123 Amateurfußballern geht Jennifer Nowak dieser Frage auf den Grund. Die Autorin beleuchtet ausgewählte Konzepte der Motivationspsychologie und präsentiert anschließend die Ergebnisse ihrer Online-Befragung zu Motivation, Persönlichkeit und Flow-Erleben. Ihre daraus abgeleiteten Hypothesen sowie ein Modellvorschlag zur Motivation des ehrenamtlichen Musizierens führen zu relevanten Ergebnissen für Theorie und Praxis. Around 14 million people in Germany regularly play music in their spare time. Many of them are members of wind orchestras or brass bands, who thus make an important contribution to regional (music) culture. However, what are their incentives in this respect? In an online survey of 214 amateur musicians and 123 amateur football players in Hesse, Jennifer Nowak addresses this question in depth. She highlights selected concepts in motivational psychology and subsequently presents the results of her online survey in terms of incentives, personality and flow state. Both the hypotheses she derives from these results plus a blueprint she suggests for encouraging playing music in one’s spare time reveal relevant findings for theory and practice in this regard.

    Nobody doubts that music has a special, somewhat mysterious power. Less clear is how we can evaluate that power. What makes music good or bad? Are there objective criteria for such a distinction? What impact can or should music have on individuals and on society as a whole? What are the factors responsible for the effect of music? This book summarizes and discusses how authors of classical antiquity addressed these questions on musical «ethos» and how they can be approached from a modern-day perspective. After systematically assembling and assessing the value-carrying characterizations of music in poetic literature, the author reviews all noteworthy Greek and Latin writings which enlighten musical «ethos» from the theoretical-philosophical perspective. He then carries the intuitions of the ancients into our time by proposing a coherent model to explain the relationship between music, ethos, and emotions based on the results of contemporary research in the disciplines of music psychology and philosophy. The concept of harmony, understood as the appropriate measure or as the balance of opposites and so central to the reflections of the ancient authors, plays a key role in shedding light on the value and impact, both positive and negative, of music in human existence. This book provides the most comprehensive overview available about the effect and ethos of music in antiquity and discusses many related questions of scholarly interest.     Nobody doubts that music has a special, somewhat mysterious power. Less clear is how we can evaluate that power. What makes music good or bad? Are there objective criteria for such a distinction? What impact can or should music have on individuals and on society as a whole? What are the factors responsible for the effect of music? This book summarizes and discusses how authors of classical antiquity addressed these questions on musical «ethos» and how they can be approached from a modern-day perspective.After systematically assembling and assessing the value-carrying characterizations of music in poetic literature, the author reviews all noteworthy Greek and Latin writings which enlighten musical «ethos» from the theoretical-philosophical perspective. He then carries the intuitions of the ancients into our time by proposing a coherent model to explain the relationship between music, ethos, and emotions based on the results of contemporary research in the disciplines of music psychology and philosophy.     Departing from the traditional German school of music theorists, Michael Klein injects a unique French critical theory perspective into the framework of music and meaning. Using primarily Lacanian notions of the symptom, that unnamable jouissance located in the unconscious, and the registers of subjectivity (the Imaginary, the Symbolic Order, and the Real), Klein explores how we understand music as both an artistic form created by "the subject" and an artistic expression of a culture that imposes its history on this modern subject. By creatively navigating from critical theory to music, film, fiction, and back to music, Klein distills the kinds of meaning that we have been missing when we perform, listen to, think about, and write about music without the insights of Lacan and others into formulations of modern subjectivity
