This welcome volume brings to English-language readers two beautifully crafted works by the internationally acclaimed French author Pierre Michon. Populated by distant and little-known figures-Irish and French monks, saints, and scientists in Winter Mythologies; Benedictine monks in the Vendée region of France in Abbots-the tales frequently draw on obscure histories and other literary sources. Michon brings his characters to life in spare, evocative prose. Each, in his or her own way, exemplifies a power of belief that brings about an achievement-or catastrophe-in the real world: monasteries are built upon impossibly muddy wastes, monks acquire the power of speech, lives are taken, books are written, saints are created on the flimsiest of evidence. Michon’s exploration in ancient archives has led him to the discovery of such often deluded figures and their deeds, and his own exceptional powers bestow upon them a renewed life on the written page. This in turn is an example of the power of belief, which for Michon is what makes literature itself possible. Winter Mythologies and Abbots are meant to be read slowly, to be savored, to be mined for the secrets Michon has to tell

"Holiness on the Move: Mobility and Space in Byzantine Hagiography, explores the literary, religious, and social functions of monastic mobility in Byzantine hagiography, touching on aspects of space, narrative, and identity. The ten chapters included in this volume highlight the multifaceted and rich nature of travel narratives, exploring topics such as authorship and audience, narrative structure and function, identity-making and practicalities of and discourse on travel. In terms of geographical span, the case studies cover Constantinople and its hinterland, Asia Minor, mainland Greece, Trebizond, the Balkans, and southern Italy, and range chronologically from the end of the sixth to the fourteenth century. The contributions offer novel insights and perspectives on the importance of mobility in the literary construction of holiness in the Byzantine world and the wider medieval Mediterranean, the spatial dimension of sacred mobility, and the ways in which mobility is employed in the narrative construction of hagiographical texts. As such, the volume joins the burgeoning research on sacred mobilities and will interest students and scholars of Byzantine and medieval literature, religion, and history, as well as a wider readership with an interest in the study of space and mobility"--...

In this, which many consider this to be Clarke's best novel, Vannevar Morgan is the greatest civil engineer of the mid-22nd century. Having built a bridge across the Straits of Gibraltar, he dreams of an even greater accomplishment, a bridge to space: a "skyhook," or "space elevator." This will be a cable stretching from the Earth's equator to an anchoring satellite in geosynchronous orbit. First Morgan must deal with the monks who own the ideal real estate, a mountaintop on the fictional island of Taprobane (a version of Clarke's adopted home of Sri Lanka, moved south so that it lies on the equator). He also has to work on the financing, solve various political problems, deal with skeptics, and finally solve some critical engineering issues and deal with the inevitable crises accompanying the actual building of the elevator.

The Robe of Leaves is an early modern text written by Gyochi (1778-1841), a priest and head scholar of the Tozan Shugendo organization. It presents the erudite face of a tradition that is usually associated with folklore and practice, rather than scholasticism. Along with a rise in government control and sectarianism, Shugendo in the Edo period witnessed significant textual production as doctrine and practice were interpreted and recorded. In his work, Gyochi portrays Shugendo as sitting squarely within the confines of Japanese Buddhism as well as connected to the history of continental Buddhism. A competent Sanskritist, equally at ease with native and continental Asian sources, he quotes collections of imperial poetry and sources from continental Buddhism, connecting to the roots of Buddhism in India and China, as well as early Buddhist ascetic practice in Japan. Gyochi also devotes considerable space to eulogizing En no Gyoja, the founder of his tradition, and defending him from charges of heterodoxy. The Robe of Leaves is considered an important record of early modern Shugendo and offers us a glimpse into the concerns of a tradition that was persecuted a few decades after the text was written.

This article illuminates the significance of the Mañjuśrī cult during Jōkei's (1155-1213) Kasagi years and his innovative synthesis of material, textual, and ritual culture. The study of such medieval Nara scholar-monks as Jōkei suffers from lingering biases that privilege the Buddhist schools strongest now over the many other movements thriving in medieval Japan. Their activities are typically cast as reactionary responses to popularizing tendencies championed elsewhere rather than as creative transformations of Buddhist teachings and practices in their own right. Even amid revisionist studies, the textual concerns of scholar-monks are often contrasted with the “lived religion” in such practices as icon veneration, pilgrimage, and simplified chanting rituals. However, this article uses Jōkei's involvement in the Kasagidera restoration and the Mañjuśrī cult, including his composition of a kōshiki devoted to Mañjuśrī (Jp. Monju), to show how these same practices were integral to the concerns of Nara scholar-monks. The online supplement includes a complete annotated translation of Jōkei's Monju kōshiki.
