"This book examines how (and why) rodeo has provided diverse communities ways in which they can prove themselves as real Americans, real men, and real heroes, often through the enactment of ever-shifting concepts like authenticity, tradition, and heritage. The author analyzes how the space of the rodeo arena has exposed fractures in the narrative of the cowboy over the twentieth century, focusing particularly on the experiences of non-normative cowboys and cowgirls to demonstrate how people stripped of their place in a collectively imagined Western past have both challenged and reinforced the cowboy as an icon of American authenticity. The case studies include female bronc-riders in the 1910s and 1920s, convict cowboys in the mid-twentieth century, all-black rodeos in the 1960s and 1970s, and gay rodeoers in the late century. Cast out of popular Western mythology and pushed to the fringes in everyday life, these people found belonging and meaning at the rodeo, staking a claim to national inclusion through regional performance. Yet, alongside their challenges to the restrictive definition of the cowboy, they also contributed to the persistent idea of an authentic Western identity"--

    Der vorliegende Band widmet sich dem deutschen Landjudentum aus literaturhistorischer Perspektive und geht der Frage nach, inwiefern die jahrhundertelange Existenz jüdischer Gemeinden im ländlichen Raum erzählliterarisch auf Widerhall stieß. Den Ausgangspunkt dieser Spurensuche bildet eine historisch fundierte Klärung des Begriffs "Landjude", der im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts einem Wandel unterworfen war und zusehends zum Gegenbild des kulturell assimilierten, städtischen Juden geriet. Als Projektionsfläche heranziehen und argumentativ vereinnahmen ließ sich der "Landjude" von mancherlei Seite. So behandelt der erste Teil von "Land, Dorf, Kehilla" wesentlich Texte nicht-jüdischer Autoren der Spät- und Gegenaufklärung, während der zweite Teil den Erzählungen jüdischer Autoren des 19. und frühen 20.     What did it mean for people of color in nineteenth-century America to speak or write "white"? More specifically, how many and what kinds of meaning could such "white" writing carry? In ReWriting White, Todd Vogel looks at how America has racialized language and aesthetic achievement. To make his point, he showcases the surprisingly complex interactions between four nineteenth-century writers of color and the "standard white English" they adapted for their own moral, political, and social ends. The African American, Native American, and Chinese American writers Vogel discusses delivered their messages in a manner that simultaneously demonstrated their command of the dominant discourse of their times-using styles and addressing forums considered above their station-and fashioned a subversive meaning in the very act of that demonstration. The close readings and meticulous archival research in ReWriting White upend our conventional expectations, enrich our understanding of the dynamics of hegemony and cultural struggle, and contribute to the efforts of other cutting-edge contemporary scholars to chip away at the walls of racial segregation that have for too long defined and defaced the landscape of American literary and cultural studies

    In the United States miscegenation is not merely a subject of literature and popular culture. It is in many ways the foundation of contemporary imaginary community. The Romance of Race examines the role of minority women writers and reformers in the creation of our modern American multiculturalism. The national identity of the United States was transformed between 1880 and 1930 due to mass immigration, imperial expansion, the rise of Jim Crow, and the beginning of the suffrage movement. A generation of women writers and reformers-particularly women of color-contributed to these debates by imagining new national narratives that put minorities at the center of American identity. Jane Addams, Pauline Hopkins, Onoto Watanna (Winnifred Eaton), María Cristina Mena, and Mourning Dove (Christine Quintasket) embraced the images of the United States-and increasingly the world-as an interracial nuclear family. They also reframed public debates through narratives depicting interracial encounters as longstanding, unacknowledged liaisons between white men and racialized women that produced an incestuous, mixed-race nation. By mobilizing the sexual taboos of incest and miscegenation, these women writers created political allegories of kinship and community. Through their criticisms of the nation's history of exploitation and colonization, they also imagined a more inclusive future. As Jolie A. Sheffer identifies the contemporary template for American multiculturalism in the works of turn-of-the century minority writers, she uncovers a much more radical history than has previously been considered

After the Party tells the stories of minoritarian artists who mobilize performance to produce freedom and sustain life in the face of subordination, exploitation, and annihilation. Through the exemplary work of Nina Simone, Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas, Danh Vō, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Eiko, and Tseng Kwong Chi, and with additional appearances by Nao Bustamante, Audre Lorde, Martin Wong, Assata Shakur, and Nona Faustine, After the Party considers performance as it is produced within and against overlapping histories of US colonialism, white supremacy, and heteropatriarchy. Building upon the thought of José Esteban Muñoz alongside prominent scholarship in queer of color critique, black studies, and Marxist aesthetic criticism, Joshua Chambers-Letson maps a portrait of performance’s capacity to produce what he calls a communism of incommensurability, a practice of being together in difference. Describing performance as a rehearsal for new ways of living together, After the Party moves between slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, the first wave of the AIDS crisis, the Vietnam War, and the catastrophe-riddled horizon of the early twenty-first century to consider this worldmaking practice as it is born of the tension between freedom and its negation. With urgency and pathos, Chambers-Letson argues that it is through minoritarian performance that we keep our dead alive and with us as we struggle to survive an increasingly precarious present
