    Scholarly interest in radical Islam is long-standing and crosses multiple disciplines. Yet, while the labelling of Islam and Muslim actors as ‘radical’ is extensive, this has not been interrogated as a particular scholarly practice. And while studies of non-Western radicalism have grown in recent years, cross-cultural analysis of radicalism as a particular concept in political thought has been neglected. This article aims to begin to address this question, with reference to radical Islam. By treating radicalism as a meta-concept, it identifies radical Islam as a malleable and composite category that is constituted by, and made legible through, conceptual properties associated with four discourses in the study of radicalism with origins in the Western academy: Euro-radicalism, identified with the European left and critical theory; fundamentalism; radicalisation; and liberalism. I argue that radical Islam is under-theorised and over-determined as a scholarly category. This can be explained by how concepts originating in the Western academy to address Western contexts and phenomena function as master frameworks, narratives, or pivots against or around which radical Islam is defined. This is the case even when Eurocentrism is contested by critical theorists who tend to reproduce it because they do not abandon Western conceptions of radicalism but rather draw on them. Academic accounts of radical Islam also authenticate Islam by advancing selective, strategic or apologetic descriptions of what constitutes radicalism. In these ways, critical scholarship, including within IR, can also be insufficiently attentive to marginal and heterodox voices that fall outside hegemonic conceptions of Islamic normativity.

    A zone of complex mobilities, a region with a diversified history and plural development, a key space for major socio-economic and political balances, the Sahel has produced its own internal conflicts, but also the mechanisms to manage them. However, for a decade, the Sahel has also been a region affected by crises resulting from the presence of radical groups which strongly affect pastoral areas and have turned into cross-border conflicts, with multidirectional contamination between areas which has led to numerous military engagements. national, regional and international. This note covers on the one hand many subjects related to the economies of arid zones, of which pastoralism is the main mode of development and in particular with the methods of management of the resources of these agroecosystems, in particular the water resources that they feature. It offers a reading that seeks to enhance the endogenous mechanisms of conflict management in pastoral areas. On the other hand, it deals with the interactions with the conflictual dynamics that have appeared with the emergence of radical movements, the takeover of territories with pastoral dominance by the latter and the counter-reaction of agricultural societies and that of the governments of the region. Finally, it seeks to identify some avenues of work to better understand these areas and to seek solution options.

    Afghanistan's Central Asian neighbours have generally reacted pragmatically to the Taliban’s seizure of power there. For the autocratically ruled, secular states on the periphery of the former Soviet empire, economic cooperation and the stabilisation of humanitarian and political conditions in Afghanistan are at the forefront of their interests in maintaining relations with their southern neighbour. According to offi­cial discourse, Central Asia’s entrenched secularism is not challenged by the Taliban’s Islamism. On social media in Central Asia, however, the Islamic emirate of the Taliban is portrayed as a political counter-model; one which is more positively received in coun­tries with greater discursive freedom and under governments whose policies more openly confront the Taliban. This reveals a trend towards Islamist-inspired iden­tity formation that will be difficult to stop through censorship and repression.

    Radicalization is a major challenge of contemporary global security. It conjures up images of violent ideologies, "homegrown" terrorists and jihad in both the academic sphere and among security and defense experts. While the first instances of religious radicalization were initially limited to second-generation Muslim immigrants, significant changes are currently impacting this phenomenon. Technology is said to amplify the dissemination of radicalism, though there remains uncertainty as to the exact weight of technology on radical behaviors. Moreover, far from being restricted to young men of Muslim heritage suffering from a feeling of social relegation, radicalism concerns a significant number of converted Muslims, women and more heterogeneous profiles (social, academic and geographic), as well as individuals that give the appearance of being fully integrated in the host society. These new and striking dynamics require innovative conceptual lenses.

    Pohlmann kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Textbereiche und Textfolgen zum Themenkomplex "Militanz und Antimilitanz im Koran" eine Konfliktkonstellation innerhalb der koranischen Gemeinde nach dem Tod des "Gesandten" widerspiegeln. Die Militanz propagierenden Passagen im Koran sind späte Interpolationen und kollidieren als ein "Fremdkörper" mit der Grundkonzeption koranischer Frömmigkeit. Ihre Autoren haben bereits die kriegerischen Entwicklungen auf der arabischen Halbinsel nach dem Rückzug der byzantinischen Ordnungsmacht im Blick. Ihre Textprodukte zielen letztlich darauf ab, den koranischen Glauben samt der entsprechenden friedfertigen Frömmigkeitspraxis zu einer Herrschaft stabilisierenden sowie Macht und Gewalt legitimierenden Religion, zur Religion eines zu organisierenden Imperiums umzugestalten. Bekanntlich wird der gesamte Inhalt des Korans muslimischerseits bislang ausnahmslos von Mohammed hergeleitet. Dass dies keinesfalls stimmen muss, legt Pohlmann in dieser Untersuchung dar. Pohlmann wendet wie bereits in seinem früheren Band über "Die Entstehung des Korans" konsequent den Methodenapparat historisch-kritischer Textanalysen an, wie das in der heutigen Bibelwissenschaft Standard ist, in den sogenannten westlichen akademischen Koranwissenschaften dagegen noch eher eine Seltenheit.
