    The contributions compiled in this volume comprise studies of Jewish texts – biblical, rabbinic, medieval, and modern – as well as of patristic and medieval Christian texts, and in one case, a passage of the Muslim text par excellence, the Quran. The authors, scholars in the fields of Jewish Studies, Catholic and Protestant Theology, Islamic Studies, German philology etc., invited to reflect on texts of their respective disciplines in context-sensitive interpretations, taking into account the link connecting Midrash, hermeneutics, and narrative, provide illuminating narratological and/or hermeneutical insights into the texts in question. The interdisciplinary dialogue that characterized the conference “Narratology, Hermeneutics, and Midrash” that gave rise to the volume proves to be rich and full of potential for further research in the direction proposed by the Series Poetics, Exegesis and Narrative.     Mischlei 31,10-31 – das sogenannte Eschet Chayil – lobt die ideale, starke, tüchtige und tatkräftige Frau, der es nachzustreben gilt. Im Midrasch Eschet Chayil aus dem Midrasch Mischlei wird jedem Vers von Mischlei 31,10-31 eine biblische Frau zugeordnet. Diese Zuordnung erfolgt manchmal kommentarlos und manchmal begleitet von kürzeren oder längeren Begründungen in Bezug auf die biblische Persönlichkeit. Während auf den ersten Blick das Arrangement des Midrasch Eschet Chayil vollständig und holistisch wirkt, wird bei näherer Betrachtung ersichtlich, dass sich der Midrasch auf zahlreiche biblische und rabbinische Quellen bezieht, diese selektiv referenziert und somit ein eigenes Bild der idealen Frau entwickelt und vertritt, das Mischlei 31,10-31 als Ausgangspunkt nimmt.Diese Arbeit zeigt den intertextuellen Charakter des Midrasch Eschet Chayil im Midrasch Mischlei auf und fragt nach dem Frauenbild, das ihm zugrunde liegt. Der Midrasch Eschet Chayil ist ein höchst intertextueller, kompilierender Midrasch, dessen Beschäftigung zu einem besseren und tiefgründigeren Verständnis von Intertextualität in der rabbinischen Literatur und des rabbinischen Frauenbildes beiträgt. Die vergleichend-hermeneutische Analyse des Textes legt dar, dass sich der Midrasch Eschet Chayil in zentralen Aspekten von seinem biblischen Ausgangstext abhebt und ein traditionelles, idealisierendes Frauenbild vertritt, das letztlich unerreichbar ist. Mishlei 31:10-31 – known as Eshet Chayil – praises the ideal, strong, capable and active woman to aspire to. In the Midrash Eshet Chayil, which can be found in Midrash Mishlei, a biblical woman is associated with each verse of Mishlei 31:10-31. This association is sometimes made without any comments and sometimes accompanied by shorter or longer explanations concerning the biblical personality. While at first glance the arrangement of the Midrash Eshet Chayil appears complete and holistic, closer examination reveals that the midrash refers to numerous biblical and rabbinic sources. It selectively references those sources and thus develops and upholds its own image of the ideal woman, which takes Mishlei 31:10-31 as its starting point.This paper investigates the intertextual character of the Midrash Eshet Chayil in Midrash Mishlei and examines the image of women that underlies it. Midrash Eshet Chayil is a highly intertextual, compiling midrash. Its study contributes to a better and deeper understanding of intertextuality in rabbinic literature and the rabbinic conception of women. A comparative-hermeneutical analysis of the text reveals that the Midrash Eshet Chayil differs in central aspects from its biblical source and represents a traditional, idealising image of women that is, ultimately, unattainable.

    Portraits through the Generations follows a group of biblical figures who have been refashioned in the Second Temple, Mishnah and Talmudic literature. The intriguing question underlying the study is what causes the fluctuations in the nature of the interpretation of their actions, Sometimes a character portrayed in the Bible in a negative light stands in full glory in the later literature, and vice versa: a positive biblical character wrapped in a critique that doubts the purity of her actions. Tracking the nature of the crystallization of traditions on biblical figures opens a wide window to expose hidden stages of development of the creative periods, and allows for a sketch of social, religious, and polemical characteristics that were sometimes disguised in halakhic and legendary genres or presented from one-dimensional perspectives. These exposures allow for a deeper and more complete understanding of the various traditions. In this book, the biblical figures are indeed building blocks, but its main occupation is in deepening the acquaintance with those who chose to write about them and attributing to them motives and deeds that do not adhere to what is described in the verses. The greater the distance between the original character and the character in his new attire, the more it is necessary to understand the motive of the seeker, to know his cultural-social and sometimes even biographical environment. he book is divided into four chapters, which deal with the challenges of Jewish life in the generations from the Second Temple to the Talmudic period: Israel and its foreign neighbors, attribution and greatness in the Torah, leadership, the status of women. In each section, biblical prototypes were chosen that formed the basis for expressing the positions of the homilists in each of the fields. The evaluation of the prototype for positive or negative, the characteristics attributed to it, and the freedom that the homilist took in interpreting his actions differently from what is described in the Bible, are the pieces of information through which the diverse views of the creators of traditions and homilies can be established

    This article combines intertextual and comparative midrashic approaches to argue that the story of Jesus's transfiguration in the Gospel of Matthew, understood in light of a set of concerted intertextual connections among Matthew, the story of Isaac's Aqedah in Genesis 22, and a number of parallel Jewish interpretive traditions, should be read as a proleptic passion narrative. By assessing the intertextual relationship between Matt 17:1-9 and Gen 22:1-19 LXX more thoroughly than has been done previously (particularly as regards the Greek form of the Aqedah) and by giving sustained attention to points of contact between Matthew's use of the Aqedah as a narrative explicating the life of Jesus and early Jewish midrashim interpreting the Aqedah in light of the history of Israel, I argue that the ancient story of Isaac functions according to the midrashic technique of the mashal.
