Marian maternity in late-medieval England takes advantage of the fifteenth century's intense interest in the Virgin Mary, the best-documented mother of the medieval period, to examine the constructions and performances of maternity in vernacular religious texts. By bringing together texts and authors that are not often discussed in tandem, this study offers a rich examination of the multiple factors at play as Marian material circulated among experienced devotional readers. Taking a close look at the private devotional reading of late-medieval patrons, the book shows how texts including Chaucer's poetry, Margery Kempe's Boke, and legendaries of female saints are saturated with indirect references to and imitations of the Virgin. Marian maternity in late-medieval England employs a matricentric feminist approach to discern how readers' devotional literacies inform their understanding and imitation of the Virgin's maternal practice. Attending to internal cues in the texts, to manuscript contexts, and to the evidence and content of readers' multiple literacies, the author examines Marian maternity as both theological concept and imitable practice. The result is a book that explains late-medieval perceptions of Mary's maternity and sets them against readers' devotional, emotional and relational circumstances

"Focusing on specific texts by Jamaica Kincaid, Maryse Conde, and Paule Marshall, this study explores the intricate trichotomous relationship between the mother (biological or surrogate), the motherlands Africa and the Caribbean, and the mothercountry represented by England, France, and/or North America. The mother-daughter relationships in the works discussed address the complex, conflicting notions of motherhood that exist within this trichotomy. Although mothering is usually socialized as a welcoming, nurturing notion, Alexander argues that alongside this nurturing notion there exists much conflict. Specifically, she argues that the mother-daughter relationship, plagued with ambivalence, is often further conflicted by colonialism or colonial intervention from the "other," the colonial mothercountry." "Mother Imagery in the Novels of Afro-Caribbean Women offers an overview of Caribbean women's writings from the 1990s, focusing on the personal relationships these three authors have had with their mothers and/or motherlands to highlight links, despite social, cultural, geographical, and political differences, among Afro-Caribbean women and their writings. Alexander traces acts of resistance, which facilitate the (re)writing/righting of the literary canon and the conception of a "newly created genre" and a "womanist" tradition through fictional narratives with autobiographical components."--Jacket Machine generated contents note:Introduction: Reclaiming Identities: Afro-Caribbean Women Writers Writing the Self --1.Resisting Zombification: (Re)Writing/Righting the Literary Canon --2.I Am Me, I Am You: The Intricate Mother-Daughter Dyadic Relationship --3.Imagined Homelands: Engendering a Mythic Return "Home" --4."An/Other Way of Knowing Things": Ancestral Line(age), Revalidating Our Ancestral Inheritances --5."Call[ing] Your Nation": A Journey Completed.

International contributors examine the mother without child, with child, and in her multiple identities as grandmother, mother, and daughter. The collection examines how authors use textual spaces to accept, negotiate, resist, or challenge traditional conceptions of mothering and maternal roles, and how these texts offer alternative practices and visions for mothers. Further, it illuminates how textual representations both reflect and help to define o

"Using writers such as Harriet Wilson, Frances E.W. Harper, Pauline Hopkins, Toni Morrison, Sherley Anne Williams, and Gayl Jones, the author highlights recurring themes and the various responses of black women writers to the issues of race and gender. Time and again these writers link slavery with motherhood - their depictions of black womanhood are tied to the effects of slavery and represented through the black mother. Patton shows that both the image others have of black women as well as black women's own self image is framed and influenced by the history of slavery. This history would have us believe that female slaves were mere breeders and not mothers. However, Patton uses the mother figure as a tool to create an intriguing interdisciplinary literary analysis."--Jacket

Literary criticism considers the father-son conflict to be one of the standard themes of German Expressionist drama. Closer examination reveals however, that clashes limited to fathers and sons are less ubiquitous in Expressionism than many critics assume and that mothers actually assume significant roles in the plots of many plays The interpretation of plays by Frank Wedekind, Carl Sternheim, Georg Kaiser, Arnolt Bronnen, Reinhard Johannes Sorge, and Fritz von Unruh illustrates the spectrum of maternal roles in Expressionism drama. From the Home Fires to the Battlefield studies criticism of social standards and mores that define the role of women, and especially mothers, in Wilhelminian society

"Throughout human history, motherhood and maternal experience have been largely defined and written by patriarchal culture. Religion, art, medicine, psychoanalysis, and other bastions of male power have objectified the maternal and have disregarded female subjectivity. As a result, maternal perspectives have been ignored and the mother's voice silenced. In recent literary texts, however, more substantial attention has been given to motherhood and to the physical, psychological, social, and cultural dynamics affecting maternal experience. In Maternal Body and Voice in Toni Morrison, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Lee Smith, Paula Gallant Eckard examines how maternal experience is depicted in selected novels by three American writers, emphasizing how they focus on the body and the voice of the mother."--Jacket
