    This volume collects twenty-two major essays by Werner Wolf published between 1992 and 2014, all of them revised but retaining the original argument. They form the core of those seminal writings which have contributed to establishing 'intermediality' as an internationally recognized research field, besides providing a by now widely accepted typology of the field and opening intermedial perspectives on areas as varied as narratology, metareferentiality and iconicity. The essays are presented chronologically under the headings of ?Theory and Typology?, ?Literature?Music Relations?, ?Transmedial Narratology?, and ?Miscellaneous Transmedial Phenomena? and cover a wide spectrum of topics of both historical and contemporary relevance, ranging from J.S.     Dieses Buch leistet die Rekonstruktion eines für die Literaturgeschichte folgenreichen Prozesses: die Überlagerung des Literatursystems durch die Massenmedien im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts und das damit verbundene Gendering des gesamten literarischen Lebens. Die Studie fokussiert eine Mediengeschichte der Literatur, die von der Differenz der Geschlechter dirigiert wird. An die Stelle des 'Kunstwerks' treten die medialen Bedingungen, die seiner Bedeutungsbildung zugrunde liegen. Ausgehend vom Erfolg der Familienzeitschriften und der extensiven Praxis des Vorabdrucks werden die Spielräume ausgelotet, die die Literatur in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts durch ihr Aufgehen in den periodischen Printmedien hinzugewinnt.     "Jennifer Egan described her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad as a combination of Proust and The Sopranos. In rereading the book, Ivan Kreilkamp takes Egan up on her comparison, showing how it blends a concern with the status of the novel in the twenty-first century with an elegiac meditation on how we experience the passage of time. Kreilkamp, a former music critic, examines how Egan's characters turn to rock and especially punk in search of community and meaning. He considers what the novel's portrayal of music says about the role of art in contemporary culture as digitization makes older technologies obsolete. Combining personal and critical reflection, he reveals how A Visit from the Goon Squad articulates and responds to the sense of loss many feel as cherished physical objects are replaced with immaterial data. For Kreilkamp, Egan's novel compellingly combines the psychological realism of the nineteenth-century novel with more recent and transient forms such as the celebrity magazine profile or a PowerPoint presentation to provide a self-reflective diagnosis of the decay and endurance of literature.     "Global Perspectives on Digital Literature: A Critical Introduction for the Twenty-First Century explores how digital literary forms shape and are shaped by aesthetic and political exchanges happening across languages and nations. The book understands 'global' as a mode of comparative thinking and argues for considering various forms of digital literature-the popular, the avant-garde, and the participatory-as realizing and producing global thought in the twenty-first century. Attending to issues of both political and aesthetic representation, the book includes a diverse group of contributors and a diverse corpus of texts, composed in a variety of languages and regions, including East and South Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, Australia, and Africa. The book's contributors adopt a wide array of interpretive approaches to make visible new connections and possibilities engendered by cross-cultural encounters. Among other topics, they reflect on the shifting conditions for production and distribution of literature, participatory cultures and technological affordances of Web 2.0, the ever-changing dynamics of global and local forces, and address fundamental questions such as, what do we mean when we talk about literature today?
