; Even though hagiography is a substantial genre of Geez literature, almost nothing is known about the process of creation of hagiographical texts. This PhD dissertation examines a hagiographical work whose genesis is documented in a way that is unique among Ethiopic hagiography. Thanks to solid manuscript evidence it was possible to reliably reconstruct the complex creation process of this indigenous hagiography. It is the hagiography of the monk Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros, who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century and who is venerated as a saint in Dabra Warq (East Goǧǧām, Ethiopia). The hagiography of Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros comprises several texts including two versions of his Life: the short (i.e. the commemorative notice for the Sǝnkǝssār) and the long Life (i.e. the gadl), each in two redactions (I and II). ). All texts are transmitted in different manuscripts that were produced around the turn of the nineteenth century. Most of the text witnesses and other valuable materials were photographed during my own field trips to Goǧǧām, ʾƎnfrāz, and Bagemdǝr. A comprehensive and vivid picture of the creative work processes could be build up after a thorough examination of the extant text witnesses. The processes include the creation of the saint’s Long Life based on the Short Life as the source text, the intensive rewriting of the Long Life resulting in a second redaction and finally the compilation of a second version of Short Life. Of outstanding importance for the reconstruction of the work’s genesis is a paper manuscript, unique in Ethiopic philology, which served first as a temporary text carrier for the Long Life I and shortly afterwards as a ‘workbook’ for the rewriting to the Long Life II. A crucial discovery is, however, that the hagiography of Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros is in fact a collaborative work. Not only scribes, but highly skilled hagiographers were involved in the creation processes that took place in different institutions. It appears very plausible to attribute the creation of the Long Life I to the authoritative institution Dabra Sān in ʾƎnfrāz where the Life was designed and crafted around 1900. At least two authors were involved, who chose a machine-produced paper account book as a text carrier for their text. The production of a parchment codex suitable for the saint’s veneration and rituals was left to the place of veneration. In Dabra Warq, however, the paper book was not simply copied ‘as is’. Rather, it served as a ‘workbook’ for four redactors who made dramatic alterations (e.g., a new founding narrative was incorporated). The paper ‘workbook’ was ultimately given to a professional scribe who produced a beautiful parchment codex and fair copied therein the Long Life II in 1910 at the latest. Sometime afterwards the Short Life II was created which can be attributed to one or more compilers who used several Vorlagen and added own details. This PhD dissertation consists of two parts. The first part is divided into nine chapters, and after the Introduction, opens with the presentation of the current state of research (Ch. 1) and the state of transmission (Ch. 2). The longest chapter (Ch. 3) comprises the detailed descriptions of all relevant text witnesses and forms the basis for the following reconstruction of the work’s creation process through a chapter-wise comparison of the long and short version of the Life in both redactions (Ch. 4), as well as for discussion of the questions concerning the place of writing and the time of creation of the texts and its witnesses (Ch. 5). The contemporary context and the historical factors that influenced the creation of the work are presented next (Ch. 6). Finally, the historicity of the three founding narratives is examined (Ch. 7), and the reception and impact of the rewritten Life are outlined Ch. 8). The first part ends with a description and justification of the editorial technique I used (Ch. 9). An Index to the first part of the dissertation, two tables, a map, and fifty-eight figures are intended to facilitate the reading of the dissertation. The detailed and comprehensive examination of the work’s genesis did not allow a complete edition of the work. All parts of the texts that are relevant for the understanding of the work’s creation process are presented in a synoptic edition accompanied by a German translation and a detailed commentary. This partial edition forms the second part of the dissertation. Form and results of this dissertation are to a large extent due to the multiple field trips during which most of the material was collected, but the project exists at all only thanks to the unflagging efforts of the guardians of the manuscripts in Ethiopia, to whom the dissertation is dedicated.

This thesis is the first attempt to analyze the phenomenon of marginal annotation in North Indian and Nepalese manuscripts from a philological, historical and cultural point of view. A critical edition of selected annotations on texts belonging to different literary genres has been provided (Kālidāsa's Raghuvaṃśa, Abhinavagupta's Īśvarapratyabhijñāvimarśinī), along with a typological classification and a study of their origins and purpose. Also the material aspects of the manuscripts are dealth with.

The Indian poet Govardhana (c. 1200 AD) was a poet at the court of the Bengali king Lakṣmaṇasena. He is most famous for his massive work, the Āryāsaptaśatī, a collection of about 700 Sanskrit single-stanza poems (muktakas) in Āryā meter, mostly with an erotic theme. My dissertation is a literary study of Govardhana and his Āryāsaptaśatī. The first part of the dissertation presents the context of the poetry and explores the importance of the Āryāsaptaśatī and its relationship with other Sanskrit and Prākrit literary texts. Although the work takes much of its inspiration from the earlier Prākrit Gāhāsattasaī, the thesis presents the Āryāsaptaśatī itself as a unique example of the evolution of Sanskrit muktaka poetry throughout the development of the genre. The second part of the dissertation presents a text and translation of the entire Āryāsaptaśatī. The text has been edited on the basis of a number of manuscripts and earlier printed editions. The translation is a scholarly, rather than a poetic one, and has benefited from the consultation of both published and unpublished Sanskrit commentaries. At the same time, it attempts to showcase the wordplay and beauty of Govardhana’s poetry.

All Ethiopic chronicles composed for many Ethiopian kings from the fourteenth to the early twentieth century were edited and published by European scholars since the last quarter of the nineteenth century and translated into several European languages (especially into French and Italian). In this regard, the works of the European scholars have greatly contributed to the reconstruction of the history and culture of the country. However, these works do not meet the demand of today’s scientific text-critical edition. Because of that various scholars who have studied these chronicles in detail proposed a re-edition of these chronicles using modern editing techniques and methods. In addition, the trans-lation of these valuable historical documents into English, together with an updated commentary, is also equally important to make the chronicles widely available to the readers. In light of this background, this dissertation provides a new edition of the chronicle of King Gälawdewos (r.1540-1559), which was already edited and published by Conzelman in 1895 based on three textual witnesses and translated into French. The dissertation fullfills two main objectives. First, to prepare a critical edition of the Chronicle applying the so called Neo-lachmannian method based on six manuscripts. Second, translating the Gǝʿǝz critical text of the Chronicle into English and annotating it. The task of edition involves studying thoroughly the internal content and the history of the transmission, collating manually and grouping manuscripts into a family on the basis of their common errors and finally establishing the stemma codicum. The chronicle represents a peculiar text in Gǝʿǝz historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chronicler. Numerous Arabisms are another special element of the text which eventually led to the conclusion that the Chronicle was certainly written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic. Therefore, it is assumed that the most likely author of the Chronicle was the medieval church scholar, Ǝč̣č̣äge ʿƎnbaqom. Although the Chronicle lacks detailed historical data, approximately two thirds of the text can be regarded as valuable for the historical reconstruction and the other third is of purely literary value. The reason for this might be, as alluded in the text, that the author com-posed it mainly for the purpose of commemoration of his beloved king who died a martyr death and to maintain the royalty of Solomonic kingship. The chronicle is transmitted as part of a compilation and independently as an individual text. In the compilation form, together with other medieval chronicles, it appears in two compilations, namely in the Bruce compilation and in the Ḫaylu compilation. The manuscript with the Bruce compilation, named after the Scottish traveller James Bruce, is one of the oldest witnesses of the text written in 1592. The other four manuscripts descend from the Ḫaylu compilation. It exists as an individual text housed in the royal church, founded by the king, Tädbabä Maryam—where the chronicle is mainly used to commemorate the saintly king. It was used to be read in front of the faithful each month at the church; this tradition has been continued until today. In addition, the indirect textual tradition of the text is attested in other Gǝʿǝz texts and in the works of European Jesuit missionaries and travellers. The Sǝnkǝssar of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church contains a short passage concerning the life story of the saintly king. Other chronicles from the sixteenth and early seventeenth century refer to the chronicle of King Gälawdewos. Páez, Portuguese Jesuit father and scholar, who travelled as a missionary to Ethiopia in 1603, in his book História da Etiópia (‘History of Ethiopia’) accomplished in 1622, quoted directly from the chronicle. This, perhaps the oldest manuscript of the chronicle, which Páez consulted for his work, is no longer preserved. The reconstruction of the text has brought important philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos in particular and new input that calls for re-editing the Ethiopic chronicles in general. First of all, the re-edition of the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos has yielded several corrections to the previous edition of Conzelman. They include the readings which the editor had wrongly selected, corrections over his emendations, revealing and emend-ing some of the readings that were not recognized as an error. Apart from this, the edition re-veals that the medieval Ethiopic chronicles from fourteenth to seventeenth century share a similar even partly the same textual transmission which mainly evolved from two collections—the Bruce compilation and the Ḫaylu compilation. The collation and evaluation of the variants have showed that the Ḫaylu compilation suffers from numerous corruptions. Owning to that the Haylu compilation does not offer a reliable text and so it should be used for the edition of other royal chronicles only with great caution. Therefore, it may be considered as necessary to re-edit those chronicles which were edited exclusively based on the texts collected from the Ḫaylu compilation. The new edition adds valuable by now not recorded items for Gǝʿǝz lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the thesis has provided a historically authentic text of the chronicle of King Gälawdewos accompanied by an updated annotated English translation which offers new insights into the medieval historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

; The present work investigates a literary movement, literatura marginal/periférica, which has been operating since 2000 in the poor neighbourhoods (periferias) of Sao Paulo, from a Cultural Science point of view. Writers and poets, who were previously excluded from Brazilian literature, collectiveley negotiate issues like marginality, violence and life in the periferias. Through independently published books, blogs and sarau (open stages) in the pubs of the periferias, the authors and poets seek to conquer a place in the established literary scene, to gain visibility and also to change their social reality. In addition to conducting textual analyzes, the literary practices of authors such as sarau, books and blogs are discussed from an intermedial and ethnographic perspective.

The Skandapurāṇa is an extensive ancient Indian religious work, which was composed in North India approximately at the beginning of the 7th century. Like all texts belonging to the Purāṇic text corpus, the Skandapurāṇa is guided by a claim of encyclopaedic completeness, and above all had the purpose to impart religious doctrines. This is accomplished particularly by a literary treatment of the rich Indian mythology from a strong Śivaite perspective. The text was probably composed in times of religious change with the intention to spread the teachings of a relatively new doctrine, the Śaivism of the Pāśupatas. For centuries Viśṇuism was the dominant religion in North India and the Skandapurāṇa might have been an instrument to counter its deep-rooted beliefs. The name of the Purāṇa goes back to Skanda, the god of war, who is generally regarded as Śiva’s son. The myth about his birth and his fight against the demon king Tāraka is a central component of the Skandapurāṇa. Although the actual narrative about these events comprises only a relatively small part of the whole work, the question of these events is the starting point and the overarching theme of the text. The present thesis contains a critical edition of the adhyāyas 163 to 165 of the Skandapurāṇa, which are those chapters that comprise the Skanda myth. Of the three manuscript recensions handed down to us only the most ancient one (the so-called Nepalese Recension) contains the original version of the story. The three manuscripts of this recension as well as the editio princeps of the text, prepared and published by Kṛṣṇaprasāda Bhaṭṭarāī in 1988, are the basis for my edition. A synopsis of the content is given in English. Furthermore, I inserted a text passage (more than one hundred verses) from the Mahābhārata into the Edition and put it in juxtaposition with a corresponding passage in adhyāya 164 of the Skandapurāṇa. The parallels between these passages are striking, and they Support my argument for an extensive utilisation of the epic on the part of the authors of the Skandapurāṇa as a source for their own narrative. This Deliberation is a central element of the second important part of this work (which precedes the edition, so to say, as introduction). In this study I point out to what extent the composers of the Skandapurāṇa adopted the material of the different Skanda accounts in the Mahābhārata, and how far they attempted to obscure this procedure. I also included adhyāya 72 of the Skandapurāṇa into my considerations, although I do not regard it as original part of the account. It contains the back story of Skanda’s birth and shows significant parallels to the Skanda account in the Rāmāyaṇa, the other great Indian epic. Moreover, I trace the relation of the Skanda narrative in the Skandapurāṇa to the whole text. In all likelyhood the Skandapurāṇa is a grown composition, which was revised and extended several times in the process of its evolution. The so-called Kauśikī cycle (which mainly comprises the adhyāyas 53 to 69) displays curious similarities with the Skanda myth, which points to a particular connection between both these accounts. I conjecture that they once formed the major part of the original version of the text.

The present doctoral dissertation collects materials pertinent for the text-historical evaluation of several unpublished commentaries on the Kirātārjunīya, a classical Epic Poem in Sanskrit. Although the collected data deal primarily with a single poem, their analysis presented in the current thesis can be considered exemplary for the study of other texts belonging to the same genre — namely, the Sanskrit epic poetry. In this way, the current dissertation contributes to the broader field of study of classical Indian literature. The first chapter of my doctoral dissertation is concerned with general methodological issues. I commence my work by laying out the method of structural analysis of the commentaries on mahākāvya and subsequently deal with several questions pertaining to the composition of these texts. The second chapter comprises an examination of several important unpublished commentaries on the Kirātārjunīya. In dealing with each of these texts, I provide a detailed description of its manuscripts first and, in the following step, survey and evaluate all the relevant historical information pertaining to the author and the composition of the respective work. The third chapter briefly examines various procedures adopted by individual commentators, by means of which the texts of their predecessors were integrated into their own works. The analysis of textual reuse described in this chapter can be applied, on the one hand, in order to examine other similar works and, on the other hand, in order to evaluate the manuscript transmission of individual texts, a problem that is dealt with in the subsequent chapters of my dissertation. In the fourth chapter, I describe the available manuscripts of a single commentary on the Kirātārjunīya, the Laghuṭikā by Prakāśavarṣa. In the fifth chapter, I attempt a detailed analysis of the data about the author's life and works available to us so far. In the sixth chapter, I finally turn to a text-historical analysis of the available versions of the Laghuṭikā. In so doing, I pay particular attention to highlighting various difficulties involved in the attempt to compare these versions with each other. In a short conclusion I, therefore, propose possible strategies, which could aid in solving the problems thus described.

The Chronicle of John of Nikiu is an extremely important historical source for the history of Egypt, as well as for the history of Late Antiquity in general. Being written either in Coptic of in Greek, the text was translated into Arabic at an undetermined date. Later it was translated into Ethiopic in 1601, and at the very end of the nineteenth century into Amharic. According to the current state of knowledge only these two versions have survived. The Chronicle was completely published and translated for the first time by H. Zotenberg in 1883. Since that time the number of available witnesses to the text increased, and the preparation of a new edition became an obvious disederatum. The present dissertation is devoted to the preparation of a new text-critical edition of the Chronicle applying the so-called genealogical-reconstructive method. The dissertation contains a summary of the history of research, analysis of the history of the text transmission, including the provenance of the Amharic version. In the frame of this project a new dossier of the text was prepared, which incorporated all available direct and indirect witnesses. In the course of the work, all available witnesses were collated and two hypotheses for a possible stemma codicum were proposed. A text-critical edition of the first eighty Chapters of the Chronicle (which corresponds to some fifty per cent of the entire text) was prepared based on one of the proposed hypotheses for stemma codicum. The Apparatus Criticus of the edition includes not only readings attested in manuscripts, but also conjectures of the text proposed by different scholars. The translation in English is accompanied by commentaries on various aspects, including comparison with other texts, which might have served as a source for the Chronicle, explanations of conjectures, historical and linguistic commentaries. The translation is supplied with transliteration of proper names and ambiguous lexica, which serves for better analysis of the content of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu.

The present dissertation contains a critical edition and annotated translation of the Tiṇaimālai Nūṟṟaimpatu (TN), one of the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works. This is a corpus of six poetical texts from the late-classical period of Tamil literature representing the genre of love poetry (akam). As such, these texts form the direct continuation of the poetry found in the Caṅkam works, the oldest stratum of Tamil literature. Unlike Caṅkam literature, however, the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works have largely been ignored by scholarship. This dissertation aims at laying out the necessary philological groundwork for a further study of the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works by presenting a critical edition and annotated translation of the TN, the longest and most remarkable of these texts. The introduction to this dissertation briefly introduces the TN and the corpus of which it forms part. Furthermore, it describes the available witnesses for the TN and their interrelation. Nine manuscripts of the TN can be located today. As it is shown, five of these manu-scripts are copies of other manuscripts or even of a printed edition, which leaves us with four primary witnesses. It is shown that these can be grouped into two strands of transmission, one that is represented by the manuscripts A1, A2, and A3, and one that is represented by the man-uscript B. The accepted text of the TN was established by the first edition of this text, which was published by Rā. Irākavaiyaṅkār (Irā.) in 1904. As it is shown, this edition was based on only one of these ms., namely A1, and did not take into consideration the other strand of transmission, represented by the manuscript B. The centrepiece of this dissertation is the critical edition and annotated translation. On the basis of the available witnesses, it is in many cases possible to improve the text of the TN as it has been established by Irā. Moreover, the critical edition contains an apparatus that reports all variants found in the primary witnesses, making it possible to reassess the choices made in the present edition. The annotated translation aims at a close rendering of the word-ing of the poems and thus has to be understood as a tool for philological analysis. The annota-tions weigh different possibilities of interpretation and discuss uncertainties. Quite a number of textual problems, however, remains, especially in the case of the final section of the TN, which has been transmitted only in a very corrupted form. Nevertheless, the present disserta-tion hopefully can contribute towards a better understanding of the TN and thus open up a window to a so far neglected area of Tamil literary history.

; Up to now western sinologsts mainly treat Jiang Kui as a poet of ci (songs) and emphasize his reputation as the last serious master of the genre before its degeneration during the 13th century. The poet is portrayed as a specialist, virtuoso and representative of a historic décadence. This judgement seems to be rash as long as an overview on the diverse focusses of his oeuvre lacks. Therefore, the present study takes into consideration the complete poetry - including the Shi - and that part of the prose works in which a direct link to poetry is established. The personal style within the diverse subgenres is investigated as well as the leitmotivs and the degree of lyric abstraction or, in other words, the ambivalence of content of the formal strictly composed and clear-cut texts most characteristic of the poet. This study consists out of four chapters within two main sections. In the first chapter the personality of the poet is described on the basis of the biographic material, which is almost exclusively transmitted via the poems and viewed on the background of important historic events. The second chapter depicts the outlines of the poetic oeuvre, presenting at first the Shi, then the Ci and finally the writings on poetry. The third chapter shows how, from a traditional topos of literati poetry - homecoming (gui) - a leitmotiv is forged which characterizes Jiang Kuis lyrical style and the personality of his poetry. The forth and final chapter intends to follow the chronological development of the poets style by comparing important texts of all the poetic forms appearing in the oeuvre and by relating the results to poetological maxims discussed at the end of the first main section.

; Between 1789 and 1798, the high official Ji Yun (1724–1805) compiled five collections of notes. Shortly thereafter, in 1800, the approximately 1200 stories were published under the title Yuewei caotang biji (YWCT). Ji Yun is best known as one of the editors-in-chief of the literature encyclopaedia Siku quanshu. Upon reaching the pinnacle of his official career and completing the Siku quanshu, Ji Yun began to collect stories for the YWCT. He made notes of narratives exchanged during social gatherings with friends and colleagues, wrote anecdotes from and about his relatives, autobiographical accounts, and his thoughts on almost every subject. The stories of the YWCT belong to the genre of the biji (notes) and the zhiguai (describing anomalies). The latter are part of the didactic literature, through which the reader should receive moral instructions and be persuaded. Through their origin and claim of authentication the zhiguai are close to the historical writings, whereas their content reflects popular beliefs. Many collections were compiled in the 18th century, of which today’s best-known is the Liaozhai zhiyi by Pu Songling (1640–1715). Pu Songling used an unconventional literary style and therefore, his collection marks a turning point in classical oral storytelling. Ji Yun criticized this novelty in style and stayed in accordance with literary conventions. Accordingly, the authenticity of the orally transmitted accounts is retained and the contents more directly communicated. The stories of the YWCT have a wide range of topics. Typical for this genre, the names of persons, places, and dates are often given, so that many narrators, protagonists, and commentators can be identified to this day. Most of the narratives are set during Ji Yun’s lifetime and in his native region of northeast China. All narratives of the YWCT are considered, analyzed, and arranged according to topic. Of further interest are the fascinating definitions of the divergent supernatural beings and their relation to humans. Here, Ji Yun’s explanations are employed as the standard order for grouping the different beings. This leads towards a slightly different and sometimes unusual categorization of supernatural beings and phenomena in this study. This work consists of five main parts. In part one, Ji Yun’s biography is portrayed and his connection with historical persons in the YWCT is highlighted. The second part, stories about the natural, starts with narratives about the interests of the elite. Here, Ji Yun’s reflections on all kinds of topics, his broad knowledge and many interests become apparent. Following, the stories about humans and their social classes are explored. Subsequently, these stories will be compared with the characterization of humans and their social classes in the stories about the supernatural (parts III and IV). The supernatural is divided into “ordinary” and “extraordinary” beings and phenomena. The ordinary supernatural is not only familiar to the protagonist, but also a part of the natural order, clearly defined and understood by everyone. Alternatively, the extraordinary supernatural is seldom occurring or rarely mentioned in the collection. It is either not understood or belongs to a species that is defined as being unusual, like the magic fox. The second part of the present survey analyzes 296 narratives about the natural, of which 161 stories are about humans. The third part, which addresses the supernatural comprises nearly half of the whole collection. Here, Heaven, the highest in the supernatural realm, is followed by the gods who are directly subordinated to him. The stories about human destiny are also included, as fate is individually determined by Heaven and the Underworld. Finally, there are the ghosts. Each human becomes a ghost after his death and has to appear in the Underworld, where he will be judged accordingly. In contrast, the particular supernatural, which is analyzed in the fourth part, is not directly related to human destiny and generally not of practical benefit to society. It can be expected that Ji Yun’s moral messages are in accordance with his biography, which exemplifies him as a successful member of the traditional elite. Considering the different criticisms of the YWCT, it might further on be expected that the didactic messages displayed in his collection should be unchanging, whether the stories are about the natural or supernatural. The focus of this study is to analyze the portrayal of the individual and his social class in relation to the moral instructions contained within the different categories of stories. Accordingly, the treatise is more sociological and historical, than literary. The general argument developed in the present study is that Ji Yun and the other elite narrators used irony as a technique to criticize some aspects of the 18th century society. + + + For more information, please see the English Introduction pdf-file.
