"The Routledge Companion to Literature and Human Rights provides a comprehensive, transnational, and interdisciplinary map to this emerging field, offering a broad overview of human rights and literature while providing innovative readings on key topics. The first of its kind, this volume covers essential issues and themes, necessarily crossing disciplines between the social sciences and humanities. Sections cover: - subjects, with pieces on subjectivity, humanity, identity, gender, universality, the particular, the body; - forms, visiting the different ways human rights stories are crafted and formed via the literary, the visual, the performative, and the oral; - contexts, tracing the development of the literature over time and in relation to specific regions and historical events; - impacts, considering the power and limits of human rights literature, rhetoric, and visual culture. Drawn from many different global contexts, the essays offer an ideal introduction for those approaching the study of literature and human rights for the first time, looking for new insights and interdisciplinary perspectives, or interested in new directions for future scholarship" -- pt. 1. Subjects -- pt. 2. Forms -- pt. 3. Contexts -- pt. 4. Impacts

This volume of essays emphasizes the common theme that bodies of water may segregate, but, ironically, also unite nations and their readers through the literature that authors from various countries produce. It reveals the importance of valuing literature that, over time, has travelled down bubbling streams, across lakes, along ocean waves, and white-water rivers because fiction, drama, and poetry know neither actual nor artificial boundaries, and, therefore, they cross-fertilize, and even transform, beliefs, practices, and roles across cultures. Topics examined here range from South Africa's on-going crises that, in part, mirror those of Somalia and Mozambique to poetry that has been reinvented as a literature in movement and to philosopher Henri Bergson's influence on other philosophers, as well as Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek. The scholars contributing to this collection hail from across the globe, allowing the work to add to conversations on regional and international literary study, with special emphasis on writings from such places as Japan, Luxembourg, the Caribbean, the United States, Hungary, South Africa, Greece, and Turkey. Reader Response Theory began to take hold in the 1960s. Much like the phenomenological approach to criticism that preceded it, it allows both reader and author intentionality and conscious presence, and it gives the reader particular presence in the fulfillment or completion of the text. The work of art mediates between author and reader, and the reader participates in an interpretive community that gives the work life and liveliness. This book is divided into three sections: Part I discusses the history and practice of Reader Response criticism; Part II comprises a collection of thirty-eight sonnets responding both critically and creatively to Shakespeare's works; and Part III discusses the poems of Part II as both creative and critical acts, elaborating on what they aim to show about the plays and how Shakespeare's plays continue to encourage varied analytical and personal response. As shown here, the creative and the critical need not be separate, exclusive acts; each invades the other. Intro -- Table of Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Part I: Poetry as Literary Criticism: Sonnets and Reader Response -- Part II: The Poems -- Part III: From Poems to Commentary: Analysis of the Reader Response Text -- Bibliography -- Index.

The places and spaces of childhood and youth are remembered and imagined in literary and media presentations. The current topographical studies open up new prospects for the spatial exploration of these childhood landscapes. The articles in this volume survey this basic research terrain, investigating child and adolescent spatial structures from literary, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary frames of reference. Jenny Erpenbeck and Peter Bichsel's literary approaches under discussion also allow new perspectives on topographies of childhood and adolescence. To speak of 'thinking with literature' is to make the assumption that literature (in the broadest sense) is neither a side-show nor a side-issue in human cultures: it belongs to the spectrum of imaginative modes that includes both philosophical and scientific thought. Whether one regards it as a practice or as an archive, literature is highly pervasive, robust, enduring, and pregnant with values. This book argues that what it affords above all is a way of thinking, whether for writer, reader, or critic

The infamous and formidable mythological figure of Medea has deservedly held an enduring appeal throughout the ages. This is the first book to present an account of literary meaning and effects drawing on our best understanding of mind and language in the form of a Cognitive Grammar. The contributors provide exemplary analyses of a range of literature from science fiction, dystopia, absurdism and graphic novels to the poetry of Wordsworth, Hopkins, Sassoon, Balassi, and Dylan Thomas, as well as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Barrett Browning, Whitman, Owen and others. The application of Cognitive Grammar allows the discussion of meaning, translation, ambience, action, reflection, multimodality, empathy, experience and literariness itself to be conducted in newly valid ways. With a Foreword by the creator of Cognitive Grammar, Ronald Langacker, and an Afterword by the cognitive scientist Todd Oakley, the book represents the latest advance in literary linguistics, cognitive poetics and literary critical practice.
