    Second-person storytelling is a continually present and diverse technique in the history of literature that appears only once in the oeuvre of an author. Based on key narratives of the post-war period, Evgenia Iliopoulou approaches the phenomenon in an inductive way, starting out from the essentials of grammar and rhetoric, and aims to improve the general understanding of second-person narrative within literature.     The essays in this volume are concerned with early printed narrative texts in Western Europe. The aim of this book is to consider to what extent the shift from hand-written to printed books left its mark on narrative literature in a number of vernacular languages. Did the advent of printing bring about changes in the corpus of narrative texts when compared with the corpus extant in manuscript copies? Did narrative texts that already existed in manuscript form undergo significant modifications when they began to be printed? How did this crucial media development affect the nature of these narratives? Which strategies did early printers develop to make their texts commercially attractive? Which social classes were the target audiences for their editions? Around half of the articles focus on developments in the history of early printed narrative texts, others discuss publication strategies. This book provides an impetus for cross-linguistic research.     From today's vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization.     Spain has been a fruitful locus for the European imagination for centuries, and it has been most often perceived in black-and-white oppositions -- either as a tyrannical and fanatical force in the early modern period or as an imaginary geography of a ‘Romantic’ Spain in later centuries. However, the image of Spain, its culture and its inhabitants did not evolve inexorably from negative to positive. From the early modern period onwards, it responded to an ambiguous matrix of conflicting Hispanophobic and Hispanophilic representations. Just as in the nineteenth century latent negative stereotypes continued to resurface, even in the Romantic heyday, in the early modern period appreciation for Spain was equally undeniable. When Spain was a political and military superpower, it also enjoyed cultural hegemony with a literary Golden Age producing internationally hailed masterpieces. Literary Hispanophobia and Hispanophilia in Britain and the Low Countries (1550-1850) explores the protracted interest in Spain and its culture, and it exposes the co-existent ambiguity between scorn and fascination that characterizes Western historical perceptions, in particular in Britain and the Low Countries, two geographical spaces with a shared sense of historical connectedness and an overlapping, sometimes complicated, history with Spain

    Addressing the history of the production and reception of the great medieval poem, Piers Plowman, Lawrence Warner reveals the many ways in which scholars, editors and critics over the centuries created their own speculative narratives about the poem, which gradually came to be regarded as factually true. Warner begins by considering the possibility that Langland wrote a romance about a werewolf and bear-suited lovers, and he goes on to explore the methods of the poem's localization, and medieval readers' particular interest in its Latinity. Warner shows that the 'Protestant Piers' was a reaction against the poem's oral mode of transmission, reveals the extensive eighteenth-century textual scholarship on the poem by figures including the maligned Chaucer editor John Urry, and contextualizes its first modernization by a literary forger inspired by the 1790s Shakespeare controversies.     Seductive Reasoning takes a provocative look at contemporary Anglo-American literary theory, calling into question the critical consensus on pluralism's nature and its status in literary studies. Drawing on the insights of Marxist and feminist critical theory and on the works of Althusser, Derrida, and Foucault, Rooney reads the pluralist’s invitation to join in a "dialogue" as a seductive gesture. Critics who respond find that they must seek to persuade all of their potential readers. Rooney examines pluralism as a form of logic in the work of E. D. Hirsch, as a form of ethics for Wayne Booth, as a rhetoric of persuasion in the books of Stanley Fish. For Paul de Man, Rooney argues, pluralism was a rhetoric of tropes just as it was, for Fredric Jameson, a form of politics.

Oltre al valore biografico, esse sono opere letterarie a tutto tondo, che spaziano dalla scrittura «di servizio» (nelle lettere redatte su commissione della moglie di Simone di Guido Guidi) all'autocommento (nelle epistole al marchese Malaspina e a Cino di Pistoia, che accompagnavano dei testi poetici) e al manifesto politico (soprattutto nelle cosiddette «arrighiane»). Questo volume è il primo dedicato alle lettere dantesche, e offre finalmente al lettore i risultati di due momenti di incontro e discussione sviluppati a Venezia, Università Ca' Foscari, nel 2016 e 2017, nell'ambito di un progetto ERC BIFLOW. Più di 20 specialisti di diverse discipline (filologia, storia, letteratura) si sono misurati con questi testi, fornendone una interpretazione puntuale, sviluppando nuove letture, inserendoli nel contesto sociale e intellettuale del tempo, collocandoli nella tormentata biografia di Dante. Oggetto dell'interesse dei contributi è anche la sparuta, ma assai qualificata, tradizione manoscritta dei testi, che viene studiata tenendo presente sia gli illustri copisti (Giovanni Boccaccio; il notaio, poi vescovo, Francesco Piendibeni da Montepulciano) sia i contesti di trasmissione. Notevole spazio è anche dato alle competenze epistolografiche di Dante e al rapporto tra la sua scrittura e la tradizione del dictamen Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302-1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante's works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante's texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context

Once married, he doubts his wife's per-fection and therefore tests her for more than ten years by taking away her chil-dren, pretending to have them killed, and by repudiating her. Finally, the marquis asks her to prepare his second wedding with a young noble lady. This second wedding never occurs, since the marquis finally reveals that the bride and her brother are Griselda's children; what is actually celebrated is the family reunion and Griselda's patience. This tale, which to our modern perceptions may appear horrible, fascinated Europe from the late fourteenth century until the nineteenth century, as the many translations and adaptations it underwent attes

Dass Produktion wie Rezeption von Kunst und Literatur keine geschlechtsneutralen Tätigkeiten sind, ist keine neue Einsicht der Gender Studies. Doch der Umstand, dass diesen 14 ausgezeichneten Frauen 100 männliche Nobelpreisträger gegenüberstehen, macht deutlich, dass die Eroberung der Autorposition durch Frauen weiterhin ein schwieriger und vielschichtiger Prozess ist. So fokussiert der Band nicht nur literarische Traditionen von Frauen, sondern auch Fragen nach weiblichem Schreiben und einer erweiterten Kanonbildung. Im Mittelpunkt der Beiträge stehen exemplarische Lektüren des Werks und das intellektuelle Profil der jeweiligen Autorin. Dabei wird in Anschluss an die von Virginia Woolf in ihrem Essay „A Room of One‘s Own" schon 1929 beschriebenen Herausforderungen für das literarische Schreiben von Frauen auch die Frage nach Bedingungen und Widersprüchen künstlerischer Kreativität gestellt. Benjamin Langer zeigt in seiner umfassenden Analyse erstmals auf, wie diese südosteuropäische Region in deutschsprachigen Texten aus einer terra incognita an der Peripherie Europas geformt und mit Zuschreibungen versehen wurde.     Par la puissance métaphorique et la force de modélisation qu'ils revêtent, les savoirs biologiques et leurs représentations suscitent au XIXe siècle la fascination des écrivains. Ceux-ci y trouvent la source d'une nouvelle poésie, d'un imaginaire dépassant la logique positiviste, mais aussi des formes textuelles nouvelles, une poétique, voire une esthétique permettant de redéfinir l'idée du « beau ». Le présent volume étudie l'impact des savoirs biologiques sur la création littéraire du XIXe siècle, en se donnant trois objectifs : (1) étudier la diffusion et la réception des savoirs biologiques par les écrivains du XIXe siècle, en prêtant une attention particulière aux travaux étrangers majeurs en la matière ; (2) analyser l'usage et les fonctions des savoirs biologiques dans les textes littéraires, leurs transformations sur le plan du contenu, de l'écriture et de la poétique, ce qui présuppose aussi l'identification des enjeux idéologiques de ces savoirs ; (3) penser les rapports ou les décalages entre l'histoire des sciences et l'histoire de la littérature, qui tantôt rend compte de débats d'actualité, tantôt au contraire s'inscrit dans des savoirs plus anciens Frontmatter -- Avant-propos -- Table des Matières -- Introduction / Klinkert, Thomas / Séginger, Gisèle -- I.     The essays in this volume are concerned with early printed narrative texts in Western Europe. The aim of this book is to consider to what extent the shift from hand-written to printed books left its mark on narrative literature in a number of vernacular languages. Did the advent of printing bring about changes in the corpus of narrative texts when compared with the corpus extant in manuscript copies? Did narrative texts that already existed in manuscript form undergo significant modifications when they began to be printed? How did this crucial media development affect the nature of these narratives? Which strategies did early printers develop to make their texts commercially attractive? Which social classes were the target audiences for their editions? Around half of the articles focus on developments in the history of early printed narrative texts, others discuss publication strategies. This book provides an impetus for cross-linguistic research.     The canon of Russian poetry has been reshaped since the fall of the Soviet Union. A multi-authored study of changing cultural memory and identity, this revisionary work charts Russia’s shifting relationship to its own literature in the face of social upheaval.Literary canon and national identity are inextricably tied together, the composition of a canon being the attempt to single out those literary works that best express a nation’s culture. This process is, of course, fluid and subject to significant shifts, particularly at times of epochal change. This volume explores changes in the canon of twentieth-century Russian poetry from the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union to the end of Putin’s second term as Russian President in 2008. In the wake of major institutional changes, such as the abolition of state censorship and the introduction of a market economy, the way was open for wholesale reinterpretation of twentieth-century poets such as Iosif Brodskii, Anna Akhmatova and Osip Mandel′shtam, their works and their lives. In the last twenty years many critics have discussed the possibility of various coexisting canons rooted in official and non-official literature and suggested replacing the term "Soviet literature" with a new definition – "Russian literature of the Soviet period".Contributions to this volume explore the multiple factors involved in reshaping the canon, understood as a body of literary texts given exemplary or representative status as "classics". Among factors which may influence the composition of the canon are educational institutions, competing views of scholars and critics, including figures outside Russia, and the self-canonising activity of poets themselves. Canon revision further reflects contemporary concerns with the destabilising effects of emigration and the internet, and the desire to reconnect with pre-revolutionary cultural traditions through a narrative of the past which foregrounds continuity. Despite persistent nostalgic yearnings in some quarters for a single canon, the current situation is defiantly diverse, balancing both the Soviet literary tradition and the parallel contemporaneous literary worlds of the emigration and the underground.Required reading for students, teachers and lovers of Russian literature, Twentieth-Century Russian Poetry brings our understanding of post-Soviet Russia up to date
