    On the unstable boundaries between "interior" and "exterior," "private" and "public," and always in some way relating to a "beyond," the imagery of interior space in literature reveals itself as an often disruptive code of subjectivity and of modernity. The wide variety of interior spaces elicited in literature -- from the odd room over the womb, secluded parks, and train compartments, to the city as a world under a cloth -- reveal a common defining feature: these interiors can all be analyzed as codes of a paradoxical, both assertive and fragile, subjectivity in its own unique time and history. They function as subtexts that define subjectivity, time, and history as profoundly ambiguous realities, on interchangeable existential, socio-political, and epistemological levels. This volume addresses the imagery of interior spaces in a number of iconic and also lesser known yet significant authors of European, North American, and Latin American literature of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries: Djuna Barnes, Edmond de Goncourt, William Faulkner, Gabriel García Márquez, Benito Pérez Galdós, Elsa Morante, Robert Musil, Jules Romains, Peter Waterhouse, and Émile Zola

    The Diseased Brain and the Failing Mind charts changing cultural understandings of dementia and alzheimer’s disease in scientific and cultural texts across the 20th Century. Reading a range of texts from the US, UK, Europe and Japan, the book examines how the language of dementia – regarding the loss of identity, loss of agency, loss of self and life – is rooted in scientific discourse and expressed in popular and literary texts. Following changing scientific understandings of dementia, the book also demonstrates how cultural expressions of the experience and dementia have fed back into the way medical institutions have treated dementia patients. Dieses Buch erarbeitet ein neues Fiktionsmodell, das solche Werke als Fiktionen beschreibbar macht und zugleich eine methodische Grundlage für deren Analyse bietet. Fiktionen werden darin als synästhetische Erfahrungen konzipiert, die sowohl mentale Vorstellungen als auch sinnliche Interaktionen umfassen können. Dabei werden nicht nur imaginierte Inhalte, sondern auch materiale Objekte als mögliche Bestandteile von Fiktionen in den Blick genommen. In komparatistisch angelegten Analysen, die den Schwerpunkt auf Beispiele aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und der Gegenwart legen, werden konkrete Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für das Fiktionsmodell vorgestellt und dessen Mehrwert demonstriert.

    Dieses Open-Access-Buch geht der Zeitreflexion im Feld der Novellistik nach und ergründet Erzählstrategien und -logiken der literarischen Vertextung von ‚Zeit‘, ihre funktionale Einbindung wie auch ihre selbstreflexive und poetologische Gestaltung in Texten. Die Grundlage bildet ein fundiertes, semiotisches Analyseinstrumentarium. Berücksichtigt wird eine breite Textauswahl mit Werken unter anderem von Büchner, Eichendorff, Gutzkow, Hauff, Hebbel, Mundt, Stifter und Tieck. Den historischen Abschnitt zwischen Goethezeit und Realismus kennzeichnet ein Selbstverständnis als Zwischenphase, in der merklich etwas zu Ende geht, ohne dass bereits etwas Neues begonnen hätte. Verankert ist dieser Problemkomplex in einer epocheneigenen Reflexion von Zeit, deren Spezifik in der Verbreiterung des Zukunftshorizontes und dem Auseinanderklaffen von Zukunftsvorstellung und -realisierung liegt. Dabei stellt sich heraus: Die Zukunft als epistemischer Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Zwischenphase ist hochgradig relevant, flexibel und imponderabel.     Fiction has a major social impact, not least because it co-shapes the image that society has of various social groups. Drawing on a collection of 170 contemporary Dutch-language novels, Character Constellations presents a range of data-driven, statistical models to study depictions of characters in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, class, age, sexuality, and other identity categories. Incorporating the tools of network analysis, each chapter highlights an aspect of fictional social networks that affects the representation of social groups: their centrality, their communities, and their conflicts. While reading individual novels in light of emerging statistical patterns, combining the formal methods of social network analysis with the interpretive tools of narratology, this study shows how central societal themes such as (in)equality and emancipation, integration and segregation, and social mobility and class struggle are foregrounded, replicated, or distorted in the Dutch novel.

     

    Showcasing what character-based critiques of literary representation gain by integrating data-driven methods into the practice of critical close reading, Character Constellations contributes to societal debates on cultural representation and identity and the role fiction and art have in those debates.

    By the second half of the 1940s, newly conquered nations of Central and Eastern Europe were expected to adjust multiple professions, including those related to the historical sciences, to the Soviet model. However, Marxism, soon to become the only acceptable methodology, was no longer understood in the same way as in Bolshevik Russia. Its Soviet variation borrowed heavily from the tradition of Russian historiography and the Russian national tradition. The variations formulated in the satellite countries were also less likely to break away from existing traditions than to revise and re-evaluate them, along with the perspectives on Russia’s role in the history of Central and Eastern Europe.

Particular attention is paid to the letters which he sent to secular and ecclesiastic officials (including the Pope), as well as relatives.
