    Cette thèse crée un halo de lumière autour de deux notions clés. En effet, afin de saisir un énoncé, on met en œuvre deux types de connaissances : universelles (générales) ; et locales (s'ancrant dans une culture particulière). Ainsi, le traducteur doit posséder un bagage cognitif riche d'éléments socioculturels concernant tant la langue-culture de départ que celle d'arrivée pour pouvoir établir une communication interculturelle entre des gens venant d'horizons divers. Nous nous concentrons dans la présente étude à exploiter un corpus extrêmement riche en exemples représentatifs puisant particulièrement dans un contexte typiquement français. En revanche, les éléments relevant des notions universelles et rationnelles, d'une part, et de la culture universalisée de l'autre, trouvent leur place au sein de ce corpus. Dans ces conditions, tout l'enjeu consiste à trouver les démarches et procédés convenables qui permettent de traduire les énoncés prenant ancrage dans le local et l'universel pour un public différent, arabe syrien dans notre cas. En conséquence, il s'avère que la démarche sourcière ne suffit pas à elle seule. Il en est de même pour la démarche cibliste. Donc, les deux stratégies traductionnelles se situent entre ancrage universel et ancrage local pour rendre un texte qui contient des éléments de valeur identitaire spécifique ou de portée générale. De surcroît, il se peut bien que les deux démarches se combinent dans une démarche composite, que nous appelons « cibsourcière », pour produire une traduction se plaçant à mi-chemin entre universel et local. L'unité de sens produite crée alors un ancrage culturellement métissé et linguistiquement novateur

    In recent years the marginal position which has defined translators and their texts has come under increasing and sustained challenge. However, although translation and subjectivity has been thoroughly considered in terms of post-colonialism and post-structuralism, there are few discussions which focus specifically on the construction of "Englishness" through vernacular translation. Using a range of theoretical approaches the five essays in this volume aim to realise such an understanding of translation by critically analyzing the cultural and political implications of translation and the construction of English subjectivities at particular historical moments

    The Dialect of Modernism uncovers the crucial role of racial masquerade and linguistic imitation in the emergence of literary modernism. Rebelling against the standard language and literature written in it, modernists such as Joseph Conrad, Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and William Carlos Williams reimagined themselves as racial aliens and mimicked the strategies of dialect speakers in their work. In doing so, they made possible the most radical representational strategies of modern literature, which emerged from their attack on the privilege of standard language

    At the same time, however, another movement identified with Harlem was struggling to free itself from the very dialect the modernists appropriated, at least as it had been rendered by two generations of white dialect writers. For writers such as Claude McKay, Jean Toomer, and Zora Neale Hurston, this dialect became a barrier as rigid as the standard language itself, and its appropriation served to reinforce the subordinate status of the dialect. Thus, the two modern movements, which arrived simultaneously in 1922, were linked and divided by their different stakes in the same language. In The Dialect of Modernism, Michael North shows, through biographical and historical investigation, and through careful readings of major literary works, that however different they were, the two movements are inextricably connected, and thus, cannot be considered in isolation.
