Kommuniziert wurde in ihr, über sie und durch sie, d.h. durch ihre gezielte Ausstattung mit Bauten und Bildwerken. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen aus der Perspektive verschiedener altertumswissenschaftlicher Disziplinen die Zusammenhänge zwischen den drei genannten Formen der Kommunikation um die Stadt Rom vom Beginn des Prinzipats bis zur Spätantike. The ancient city of Rome can be understood as an ensemble of monuments, as aspace of actionfor its inhabitants, as a literary construction. Communication took place in it, about it and through it; that is by means of furnishing it with a conscious programme of buildings and works of art. From the perspective of various classical disciplines, the papers in this volume analyse the relationships between these three forms of communication about the city of Rome from the beginning of the Principate to Late Antiquity.

Die Amazonen sind jedoch, wie die Beiträge dieses Tagungsbandes zeigen, in allen literarischen und bildlichen Gattungen durch alle Epochen der Antike geradezu paradigmatisch für die Repräsentation von Gegenbildern in Mythos und Geschichte: eigen-fremd, selbst-anders ebenso wie sesshaft-nomadisch. Sie sind somit Teil ganz allgemeiner Gegenwelten, in denen sich Selbstbild- und Fremdbildkonstruktionen vermischen. Until now, the image of the Amazons that prevailed in classical antiquity has been predominantly interpreted within the framework of gender discourse. However, as the essays in this volume of conference proceedings demonstrate, Amazons have been paradigmatic in all literary and pictorial genres and through all epochs of antiquity as representatives of various contrast in myth and history, including the familiar and alien, self and other, as well as settled and nomadic. As such, they are a part of very generalized alternative worlds in which constructions of the self and images of the other are co-mingled.

Propertius, Catullus, and Horace deployed the first-person speaker in a variety of ways that either bolster or undermine the link between this figure and the poet himself. In I, the Poet, Kathleen McCarthy offers a new approach to understanding the ubiquitous use of a first-person voice in Augustan-age poetry, taking on several of the central debates in the field of Latin literary studies—including the inheritance of the Greek tradition, the shift from oral performance to written collections, and the status of the poetic "I-voice."In light of her own experience as a twenty-first century reader, for whom Latin poetry is meaningful across a great gulf of linguistic, cultural, and historical distances, McCarthy positions these poets as the self-conscious readers of and heirs to a long tradition of Greek poetry, which prompted them to explore radical forms of communication through the poetic form. Informed in part by the "New Lyric Studies," I, the Poet will appeal not only to scholars of Latin literature but to readers across a range of literary studies who seek to understand the Roman contexts which shaped canonical poetic genres

Instead, generic questions are normally left to the literary critic, who in turn is less interested in religion. To evaluate the relation of epiphanies and divinatory dreams to Greek polytheism, the book investigates relevant representations through all major textual genres in pagan antiquity. The evidence of the investigated genres suggests that the ‘epiphany-mindedness’ of the Greeks, postulated by most modern critics, is largely an academic chimaera, a late-comer of Christianizing 19th-century-scholarship. It is primarily founded on a misinterpretation of Homer’s notorious anthropomorphism (in the Iliad and Odyssey but also in the Homeric Hymns). This anthropomorphism, which is keenly absorbed by Greek drama and figural art, has very little to do with the religious lifeworld experience of the ancient Greeks, as it appears in other genres. By contrast, throughout all textual genres investigated here, divinatory dreams are represented as an ordinary and real part of the ancient Greeks' lifeworld experience

Die Neuübersetzung, nach Werkgruppen gegliedert, bezieht ihre Berechtigung aus Wielands Feststellung, große Texte müssten alle 30 bis 40 Jahre neu übersetzt werden, um den Veränderungen der Sprache Rechnung zu tragen. Der erste Band enthält die im engeren Sinne rhetorischen Schriften Lukians The "long 19th century" saw the publication of three collected German translations of the works of Lucian of Samosata, those by Wieland (1788/89), Pauly (1827–1832), and Fischer (1886/87). This new translation, structured by work groups, draws its justification from Wieland’s theory that major texts must be retranslated every 30 to 40 years in order to reflect changes in language. Volume I contains Lucian’s specifically rhetorical writings

    A wooden statue with a large phallus, Priapus, the god of gardens, warded off thieves and, owing to his obscene appearance, prompted Greek and Latin poets to write about him again and again, more or less lewdly. This volume contains the Corpus Priaporum as well as Priapus poetry by writers like Theocritus, Horace, and Ovid. It concludes with an essay on Priapus's reception by writers like Goethe Der Gartengott Priap, als hölzerne Statue mit übergroßem, rot bemaltem Phallus und einer Sichel in der Hand dargestellt, soll Diebe abwehren. Seine obszön wirkende Erscheinung hat immer wieder griechische und lateinische Verfasser von Gedichten dazu angeregt, mehr oder weniger anzüglich über ihn zu schreiben. Am weitesten ging dabei ein unbekannter Poet wahrscheinlich des 2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., der in einem der Person Priaps gewidmeten, sorgfältig komponierten und intertextuell mit klassischer Poesie vernetzten Gedichtbuch den Gott die Eindringlinge in sein Reich mit der von ihm abstehenden 'Waffe' auf dreierlei Weise 'bestrafen' lässt. Der Band enthält außer diesem Corpus Priapeorum genannten Buch die Priap-Dichtungen älterer und jüngerer Dichter, darunter Theokrit, Catull, Vergil, Horaz, Tibull, Ovid, Petron und Prudentius mit Erläuterungen. Die Einführung informiert über den Priap-Kult und ordnet die Texte literaturgeschichtlich ein; ein Essay zu dem sehr reichen Fortwirken der Priap-Poesie seit der frühen Neuzeit behandelt u.a. die Rezeption durch Lessing und Goethe

Die vorliegende Arbeit leistet eine umfangreiche und gattungsübergreifende Bestandserhebung zu den literarischen Bearbeitungen des Ödipus-Stoffes. Den Schwerpunkt bilden dessen tragische Bearbeitungen bei Aischylos, Sophokles und vor allem Euripides im Spannungsfeld zwischen nachgewiesenen Abhängigkeiten und ausgeprägtem Innovationscharakter. Im Zuge dieser komparatistischen Untersuchung von einzelnen fragmentarisch oder vollständig erhaltenen Texten wird ein Bogen zu den römischen Dichtern Accius und Seneca geschlagen, um aufzuzeigen, in welchem Umfang und in welcher Weise sie auf die genannten griechischen Vorgänger rekurrieren. Insgesamt gelingt es dieser Untersuchung, nicht nur die gattungsinternen Abhängigkeiten der vielfältigen Ödipus-Verarbeitungen, sondern auch den Innovationsanspruch in einer breit angelegten Studie schärfer und systematischer als zuvor zu präsentieren This volume undertakes a comprehensive study of ancient dramatic renditions of the Oedipus theme, from the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides (the fragments of which are addressed in particular detail) through those of Seneca. Many scholars regard Vergil's poem as an attempt to combine Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into a single epic. Joseph Farrell challenges this view, revealing how the Aeneid stages an epic contest to determine which kind of story it will tell—and what kind of hero Aeneas will be.Farrell shows how this contest is provoked by the transgressive goddess Juno, who challenges Vergil for the soul of his hero and poem. Her goal is to transform the poem into an Iliad of continuous Trojan persecution instead of an Odyssey of successful homecoming. Farrell discusses how ancient critics considered the flexible Odysseus the model of a good leader but censured the hero of the Iliad, the intransigent Achilles, as a bad one. He describes how the battle over which kind of leader Aeneas will prove to be continues throughout the poem, and explores how this struggle reflects in very different ways on the ethical legitimacy of Rome’s emperor, Caesar Augustus.By reframing the Aeneid in this way, Farrell demonstrates how the purpose of the poem is to confront the reader with an urgent decision between incompatible possibilities and provoke uncertainty about whether the poem is a celebration of Augustus or a melancholy reflection on the discontents of a troubled age

    The volume deals with the mechanisms of the oral communication in the ancient Greek culture. Considering the critical debate about orality, the analysis of the communicative system in a predominantly oral-aural ancient society implies a reassessment and a deep reconsideration of the traces which orality embedded in the texts transmitted to us. In particular, the focus is on the 'cultural message', a set of information which is processed and transmitted vertically as well as horizontally by a living being, so to be differently from a genetically encoded information, a culturally defined process. The survey intertwines different approaches: the methodologies of cognitivism, biology, ethology, to analyze the embrional processes of the cultural messages, and the tools of historical and literary analysis, to highlight the development of the cultural messages in the traditional knowledge, their codification, transmission, and evolutions in the dialectics between orality and writing. The reconstructed pattern of the mechanisms of cultural messages in a prevailing oral-aural system cast a light on a shadowy aspect of a sophisticated communication system that has long influenced European culture

Darum sucht dieses Buch die Annäherung an antike Rezeptionshaltungen.Die systematische Auseinandersetzung mit der Rhetoriklehre zeigt, dass Aufzählungen die visuelle Imagination unterstützen und zur Affekterregung beitragen. Lust und Staunen sind ein ambivalent bewertetes Begriffspaar, mit dem die antike Rezeptionsästhetik die Inszenierung und Betrachtung von Gewalt charakterisiert. Wertevorstellungen wiederum werden in verkürzten Aufzählungen von exempla veranschaulicht. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen erweist ein close reading Senecas und Lucans, dass die Anschaulichkeit ihrer Texte auf der Reduktion auf konkrete Details beruht, die aber gerade durch die Häufung in Aufzählungen ihre affektive Wirkung entfalten.     Fides in Flavian Literature explores the ideology of "good faith" (fides) during the time of the emperors Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian (69–96 CE), the new imperial dynasty that gained power in the wake of the civil wars of the period. The contributors to this volume consider the significance and semantic range of this Roman value in works that deal in myth, contemporary poetry, and history in both prose and verse. Though it does not claim to offer the comprehensive "last word" on fides in Flavian Rome, the book aims to show that fides in this period was subjected to a particularly striking and special brand of contestation and reconceptualization, used to interrogate the broad cultural changes and anxieties of the Flavian period as well as connect to a republican and imperial past.     Like the male heroes of epic poetry, Helen of Troy has been immortalized, but not for deeds of strength and honor; she is remembered as the beautiful woman who disgraced herself and betrayed her family and state. Norman Austin here surveys interpretations of Helen in Greek literature from the Homeric period through later antiquity. He looks most closely at a revisionist myth according to which Helen never sailed to Troy, but remained blameless, while a libertine phantom or ghost impersonated her at Troy. Comparing the functions of contradictory images of Helen, Austin helps to clarify the problematic relations between beauty and honor and between ugliness and shame in ancient Greece.Austin first discusses the canonical account of the Iliad and the Odyssey: Helen as the archetype of woman without shame. He next considers different versions of Helen in the Homeric tradition. Among these, he shows how Sappho presents Helen as an icon of absolute beauty while she defends her own preference of eros over honor and her choice of woman as the object of desire. Austin then turns to three major authors who repudiated the traditional Helen of Troy: the lyric poet Stesichorus and the dramatist Euripides, who embraced the alternative myth of Helen's phantom; and the historian Herodotus, who claimed to have found in Egypt a Helen story that dispenses with both Helen and the phantom. Austin maintains that the conflicting motives that prompted these writers to rehabilitate Helen led to further revisions of her image, though none have endured as a credible substitute for the Helen of epic tradition

    Ciceros actio secunda in Verrem gehört zweifellos zu den bekanntesten Reden des großen römischen Politikers. Dennoch wurde sie bisher nur teilweise in moderner Kommentierung erschlossen. Diese Forschungslücke wird durch den hier vorgelegten Kommentar für De praetura Siciliensi geschlossen. Das zweite Buch der actio secunda ist so unterschiedlichen Themen wie Bestechungen oder Bereicherungen im Zusammenhang mit Zivil- und Kapitalprozessen, Kommunalämtern und Ehrenstatuen sowie der Kooperation mit den Steuerpächtern gewidmet. Der Kommentar berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse verschiedenster Forschungsdisziplinen, besonders der rechts- und althistorischen Forschung, arbeitet sie kritisch auf und macht sie für das Verständnis der Rede fruchtbar. Vor allem aber beleuchtet er diese Einzelrede erstmals vollständig aus philologischer Sicht, erörtert Sprache, Stil und Textkritik und zeigt vor allem die Raffinesse von Ciceros Redetaktik in dieser Rede und im Zusammenhang des Gesamtkorpus auf.     This work examines the more than one hundred analogues of Samson Agonistes, about half of them written earlier than Milton's drama. The author has gone back in every instance to primary sources, and examined all treatments of Milton's theme, in all languages, for their intrinsic interest and merit. While he has not entirely omitted a discussion of source relationships, his concern here has been chiefly with analogues. In Part I of the book the author compares five pre-Miltonic works, which he has translated, in whole or in part, from the original Latin, Dutch, and Italian. In Part II, a descriptive catalogue, he comments on the significance, to Miltonists and to the general reader, of the analogues. He traces the purposes beyond mere theatre in the different versions of the play: versions prior to 1670 contain many overtones of personal, national, or theological significance, while, after 1671, there is a rapid shift away from religious or moral presentation to a more strictly theatrical entertainment. Dr. Kirkconnell believes that this shift in interest has obscured from most of the critics of later centuries the tone and tradition of this great drama. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries have seen dozens of versions of the old play theme, nearly all of them wholly disregarding any inner drama of the spirit, and stressing extrovert aspects of Strength, Beauty, and Sex. As a whole, the analogues will reveal the variety that playwrights have found possible in the ancient theme. The author concludes that Milton's treatment is the noblest ever written, surpassing all others in literary quality and in the nature of the dramatic conflict it describes
