Crossing Languages to Play with Words -- An Introduction ; I. Discussion Forum ; Approaching Wordplay ; Varieties of Wordplay ; Some Specific Insights into Wordplay Form: Sublexical vs. Lexical Level ; A Note on the Relation between Cognitive Linguistics and Wordplay. Discursive Dimensions of Wordplay II. Multilingual Wordplay in Different Communicative Settings ; Multilingual Wordplays amongst Facebook Users in Mongolia ; Handling Linguistic Asymmetries via Bilingual Punning in Conversations among Speakers of Cognate Languages. Through the Cognitive Looking Glass: Studying Bilingual Wordplay in Public Signage Cutting across Linguistic Borders? Interlingual Hair Salon Names in Plurilingual Switzerland ; III. Translation of Wordplay ; Playing on Translation in Shakespeare's Henry V (Act 5, Scene 2). Wordplay involving several linguistic codes represents an important modality of ludic language. It is attested in different epochs, communicative situations, genres, and contexts of use. The translation of wordplay, which is generally seen as a challenging enterprise, illustrates another dimension of crossing linguistic borders in wordplay. The third volume of the series The Dynamics of Wordplay unites contributions from different disciplines which study the creative and playful use of elements from different languages and the transfer of ludic language into other linguistic systems. It sheds light on the multi-dimensionality, special linguistic make-up, and specific interactive potential of wordplay at the interface of different languages and cultures. The individual studies collected in this volume will be of interest to scholars from different scientific fields, such as linguistics and literary studies as well as cultural and media studies

Introduction. Fact and fiction : literary and scientific cultures in Germany and Britain -- thoughts on a contentious relationship / Christine Lehleiter -- Facts are what one makes of them : constructing the Faktum in the Enlightenment and early German Romanticism / Jocelyn Holland -- The competing structures of signification in Samuel Hahnemann's Homeopathy : between 18th-century Semiosis and Romantic Hermeneutics / Alice Kuzniar -- "She comes! the GODDESS!" : narrating nature in Erasmus Darwin's The Botanic Garden (1791) / Ann Shteir -- Elective affinities/Wahlverwandtschaften : the career of a metaphor / Christian P. Weber -- Physics disarmed : probabilistic knowledge in the works of James Clerk Maxwell and George Eliot / Tina Young Choi -- Herder's unsettling of the distinction between fact and fiction / John K. Noyes -- Fictional feedback : empirical souls and self-deception in the Magazine for empirical psychology and beyond / Michael House -- Fictional feelings : psychological aesthetics and the paradox of tragic pleasure / Tobias Wilke -- Coining a discipline : Lessing, Reimarus, and a science of religion / Stefani Engelstein -- Kin selection, Mendel's "Salutary Principle," and the fate of characters in Forster's The longest journey / Daniel Aureliano Newman -- Anatomy collections in and of the mind : science, the body and language in the writings of Durs Grünbein and Thomas Hettche / Peter M. McIsaac -- Vivifying the uncanny : ethnographic mannequins and exotic performers in nineteenth-century German exhibition culture / A. Dana Weber. "Fact and Fiction explores the intersection between literature and the sciences, focusing on German and British culture between the eighteenth century and today. Observing that it was in the eighteenth century that the divide between science and literature as disciplines first began to be defined, the contributors to this collection probe how authors from that time onwards have assessed and affected the relationship between literary and scientific cultures"--

Involuntary associations : "Postcolonial Studies" and "World Englishes" -- Grammars of living break their Tense : world Englishes and cultural translation -- English in the conversation of mankind : world Englishes and global citizenship -- Declarations of linguistic independence: the postcolonial dictionary -- Writing after the end of empire : Composition, community, and creativity -- Slow reading : the opacity of world literatures -- Conclusion : English remains, englishes remain. The consequences of Englishes spread have become increasingly clear to its diverse speakers. Sometimes associated with a standardization leading to homogenization, often also with imperialism, English is increasingly understood to have no necessary connection with any country or group of countries. The willingness to accept that English has become Englishes might be less evident among so-called native speakers, but their authority is weaker than it seemed. This book puts examples from World Englishes into dialogue with postcolonial studies. The dialogue will correct misconceptions and misapprehensions in postcolonial studies, with World Englishes offering renewal for postcolonial studies. At the same time, the dialogue will also apply postcolonial studies' political and philosophical ideas to World Englishes, resulting in a postcolonial perspective on English today

"This collection is a timely intervention in national debates about what constitutes original or plagiarized writing in the digital age. Somewhat ironically, the Internet makes it both easier to copy and easier to detect copying. The essays in this volume explore the complex issues of originality, imitation, and plagiarism, particularly as they concern students, scholars, professional writers, and readers, while also addressing a range of related issues, including copyright conventions and the ownership of original work, the appropriate dissemination of innovative ideas, and the authority and role of the writer/author. Throughout these essays, the contributors grapple with their desire to encourage and maintain free access to copyrighted material for noncommercial purposes while also respecting the reasonable desires of authors to maintain control over their own work. Both novice and experienced teachers of writing will learn from the contributors' practical suggestions about how to fashion unique assignments, teach about proper attribution, and increase students' involvement in their own writing. This is an anthology for anyone interested in how scholars and students can navigate the sea of intellectual information that characterizes the digital/information age."--Publisher's description

This volume offers a fresh intercultural perspective on the discursive and rhetorical challenges non-Anglophone scholars face while writing and publishing in English for an international readership. The volume presents a wide spectrum of text-based intercultural analyses of academic texts written in L2 English. Placed in the context of a rapidly increasing role of English as the universal language of scientific and scholarly communication, the contributions included attempt to explore the native language influence on L2 English academic texts or, conversely, the influence of rhetorical or discursive features of English on L2 texts. Spanning from texts by Chinese to Lithuanian authors, the chapters in this volume offer a rich selection of lexico-grammatical, discursive and rhetorical elements analysed and compared across genres, disciplines and languages both within synchronic and diachronic perspectives. This volume will be of interest to both experienced and novice researchers in such fields as English for Academic Purposes, Intercultural Rhetoric, Genre Theory, Corpus Linguistics, and English as a Lingua Franca

A Responsive Rhetorical Art explores the risk-ridden realm of wise if always also fallible rhetorical action--the productive knowledge building required to compose and to leverage texts, broadly construed, for the purposes of public life marked by shrinking public resources, cultural conflict, and deferred hope. Here, composition and literacy learning hold an important and distinctive cultural promise: the capacity to invent with other people new ways forward in light of their own interests and values and in the face of obstacles that could not have otherwise been predicted. Distributed across publicly situated strangers, including citizen-educators, this work engages a persistent challenge of early rhetorical uptake in public life: that what might become public and shared is often tacit and contested. The book's approach combines attention to local cases (with a transnational student organization, the Nipmuck Chaubunagungamaug, and the South Sudanese diaspora in Phoenix) with a revisable guide for taking up wise action and methods for uncovering elusive institutional logics

"Fact and Fiction explores the intersection between literature and the sciences, focusing on German and British culture between the eighteenth century and today. Observing that it was in the eighteenth century that the divide between science and literature as disciplines first began to be defined, the contributors to this collection probe how authors from that time onwards have assessed and affected the relationship between literary and scientific cultures. Fact and Fiction's twelve essays cover a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics and chemistry to medicine and anthropology, and a variety of literary texts, such as Erasmus Darwin's poem The Botanic Garden, George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, and Goethe's Elective Affinities. The collection will appeal to scholars of literature and of the history of science, and to those interested in the connections between the two

"Five Spice Street tells the story of a street in an unnamed city, whose inhabitants speculate on the life of a mysterious Madam X. The novel interweaves their endless suppositions into a work that is at once political parable and surreal fantasia. Some think X is fifty years old, others that she is twenty-two. Some believe she uses occult powers to enslave the youth of the street; others think she is playing clever mind games with people. Who is Madam X? How has she brought the good people of Five Spice Street to their knees either in worship or in exasperation? The unknown narrator takes no sides in the endless interplay of visions, arguments, and opinions. The investigation rages as the street becomes a Walpurgisnacht of speculations, fantasies, and prejudices. Madam X is the vehicle through whom people bare their souls, reveal their innermost selves, even as they try to discover the mystery of her extraordinary powers." "Five Spice Street is an astonishing work of contemporary fiction. Exploring the collective consciousness of this little street of ordinary people, Can Xue penetrates the deepest existential anxieties of the present day - whether in China or in the West - where the impermanence of identity struggles with the narrative within which identity must compose itself."--Jacket

How can English and American Studies be instrumental to conceptualizing the deep instability we are presently facing? How can they address the coordinates of this instability, such as war, terrorism, the current economic and financial crisis, and the consequent myriad forms of deprivation and fear? How can they tackle the strategies of de-humanization, invisibility, and the naturalization of inequality and injustice entailed in contemporary discourses? This anthology grew out of an awareness

Globalization, the Internet and an era of mass travel have combined to produce a world with a language mix on a huge scale. Linguanomics explains this multilingualism in a material, economic and cultural sense. What is the effect of this multilingualism on society, organizations and individuals? What are the economic benefits and drawbacks? Should we invest in language skills? Should there be interventionist policies, and if so, at what level? Should there be a global lingua mundi? The debate surrounding multilingualism is often clouded by emotion and misconception. With an analysis devoid of rhetoric, Gabrielle Hogan-Brun takes an objective look at this charged area. The result is Linguanomics : a major step towards a clearer understanding of the market potential of multilingualism, its benefits, costs and points of contention. Asking significant questions of profound concern to the future of global collaboration, Linguanomics is an essential guide to students, teachers, policy makers and politicians and anyone who cares about the role of language in the modern world Title Page; Copyright Page; Contents; Acknowledgements; Setting the Scene; Chapter 1 Trading across cultures: Then and now ; Early trade and transportation ; Markets and communication ; Territory, entrepreneurship, production ; Demand, supply, resources ; Chapter 2 Economic aspects of languages today ; Calculating language choices ; An economics perspective ; Modelling multilingualism ; Balancing language choices ; Language diversity economics ; Chapter 3 Managing multilingualism ; Lessons from failures.
