    "Wir sind nicht auf der Welt um zu schweigen ist der Titel einer etwas unkonventionellen "Einleitung in die Rhetorik". Sie ist keine Einführung in deren Geschichte oder System, sondern legt das spezifische Frageinteresse der Rhetorik frei. Seit der Antike fragt die Rhetorik nach den Bedingungen überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung als Basis überlebensnotwendiger Kooperation. Der notorische Konflikt der Rhetorik mit der Philosophie resultierte aus der unterschiedlichen Funktionalisierung dieser Zustimmungsnötigung: Soll sie bloss als Konzession an die intellektuelle Schwäche von Menschen geduldet werden, um sie so für die Akzeptanz von Wahrheitsansprüchen zu gewinnnen (so Platon), oder muss man in der überzeugten Zustimmungsnötigung vielmehr den eigentlichen Grund möglicher Wahrheitsgeltung sehen (so die Sophistik)? Entschieden wurde dieser Konflikt nach Hans Blumenberg erst, als sich direkte Wege zur Wahrheit philosophisch nicht mehr seriös versprechen liessen. Dadurch konnte das rhetorische Prinzip überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung endlich auch philosophisch zu einem attraktiven Geltungsprinzip unter Bedingungen der Moderne werden. Wenn daher heute etwas Rhetorik aktuell macht, dann ist es die Modernität dieses überzeugungs- bzw. zustimmungsabhängigen Geltungsprinzips"-- "This somewhat unconventional "introduction to rhetoric" does not engage in a historical or systematic survey. Rather, it explores the specific substantive concern of rhetoric: how does persuasive speech help to achieve cooperation based on understanding?     Exploring multilingualism as a complex, context-related, societal and individual phenomenon, this book centres around perspectives on how multiple languages are made (in)visible within educational settings in the Global North. The authors of each chapter compare and contrast findings across geographical contexts with the goal of understanding the facets of multilingualism that, on the one hand, conform across contexts, and on the other, diverge context-specifically. The chapters range from contributions with a focus on national/state planning for the development of sustainable multilingual and intercultural educational policies, to chapters that deal with multilingual practices and identities of students and student teachers as well as the consequences for language practices, strategies and policies in diversifying societies. This cross-contextual, comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of multilingualism will be of great interest to researchers, administrators, practitioners and students within the fields of multilingual education, sociolinguistics, youth culture and identity studies.

    "Analysing Religion Discourse: Introduction Stephen Pihlaja 1.1 Background, history, and key terms When you think about religious discourse, you probably think of some kind of institutional text or talk - sermons and catechisms, sacred books, prayers, and hymns. Institutions dominate what we think religions are, how we think about them, and how religious belief is established and develops. The people writing religious texts are often revered and seen to be holding special knowledge - prophets and theologians and the enlightened. They might wear clothes to set them apart. They might write or stand and speak to religious believers from a physical distance. Their words can be seen as inspired or infallible, or even the very words of the divine. The texts themselves also have power. They can invoke a reality beyond what we can see and they connect the hearer to something beyond themselves, to something ineffable. The words of these texts have power even when they are referred to in passing. The very mention of them has meaning, like a sport fan holding a sign that simply says 'John 3:16'. They have power to make believers act, like when the call to prayer draws people to the neighbourhood mosque. The language of religion, when it is used, changes things"--

    As digital convergence marks the transition from print to screen culture, translation plays an increasingly important role of in the production and dissemination of the news. The translation of information in the news media is a pervasive set of practices that affects the daily consumption of the news and a topic of relevance to scholars in several areas of the humanities and the social sciences. This book provides a wide-ranging and accessible introduction to research in news media translation practices, products and processes, illustrating and discussing historical, theoretical and descriptive perspectives. Inter- and multi-disciplinary research spans fields such as Translation Studies, Linguistics, Journalism and Media Studies, and includes approaches from Critical Discourse Analysis and narrative theory to Systemic Functional Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics. The book also offers first-hand analyses of news texts in English and Italian, approaching news translation from an ethnomethodological perspective.

Sie ist keine Einführung in deren Geschichte oder System, sondern legt das spezifische Frageinteresse der Rhetorik frei. Seit der Antike fragt die Rhetorik nach den Bedingungen überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung als Basis überlebensnotwendiger Kooperation. Der notorische Konflikt der Rhetorik mit der Philosophie resultierte aus der unterschiedlichen Funktionalisierung dieser Zustimmungsnötigung: Soll sie bloss als Konzession an die intellektuelle Schwäche von Menschen geduldet werden, um sie so für die Akzeptanz von Wahrheitsansprüchen zu gewinnnen (so Platon), oder muss man in der überzeugten Zustimmungsnötigung vielmehr den eigentlichen Grund möglicher Wahrheitsgeltung sehen (so die Sophistik)? Entschieden wurde dieser Konflikt nach Hans Blumenberg erst, als sich direkte Wege zur Wahrheit philosophisch nicht mehr seriös versprechen liessen. Dadurch konnte das rhetorische Prinzip überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung endlich auch philosophisch zu einem attraktiven Geltungsprinzip unter Bedingungen der Moderne werden. Wenn daher heute etwas Rhetorik aktuell macht, dann ist es die Modernität dieses überzeugungs- bzw. zustimmungsabhängigen Geltungsprinzips"-- "This somewhat unconventional "introduction to rhetoric" does not engage in a historical or systematic survey. Rather, it explores the specific substantive concern of rhetoric: how does persuasive speech help to achieve cooperation based on understanding? In light of this question, the author describes the current status of rhetoric as a modern principle for establishing validity that is based on persuasion"--
