    Abstract: This study tries to expand the richness of Bakhtin's theory of novel by showing the reader that its thorough features could be traced back in a play rather than a novel, considering it more than what is usually the basis of "historical poetics" mainly in the form of a novel accentuating the constitution of a social ideology besides an individual one while gesturing dialogically in the interaction between representation in its textual form and particularities of its proper probable forces in their socio-historical stratifications within notions such as dialogism, intertextuality, heteroglossia and polyphony. To do so a successful Irish play of exuberance is invited to be served by a thinker from the past Soviet. Since the references are written in an artistic language, a language near to a poetic one tries to tinker rationality to irrationality. In its overall conception and in specific contributions (including an introductory essay), this collection demonstrates the benefits of working across the disciplines of history, geography, literature and cultural studies, but also presents new configurations of cultural forms hitherto associated with specifically national and sub-national literatures. The essays, from both established and new scholars working in the fields of British, Irish and comparative cultural studies, addresses broad questions raised by the interface between language, gender, sexuality and ethnicity in relation to marginal identities, but also includes specific genre-based case studies on contemporary poetry, fiction, drama, popular music and art. Like few other genres, it lends itself to exploring society in its different layers. In the case of Great Britain and Ireland, it functions as a key medium in depicting the state of the nation. Focussing on questions of genre, narrative form, and serialisation, this volume examines the variety of ways in which popular recent British and Irish television series negotiate the concept of community as a key component of the state of the nation.

    Heilige, edle Wilde oder Barbaren: Literarische Irlanddarstellungen aller Zeiten, die in eine übergreifende imagotype (deutsch-englisch-irische) Makrostruktur eingebunden sind, zeichnen sich durch eine eindeutige Polarisierung aus. Anders als eher thematologisch ausgerichtete Arbeiten analysiert diese Untersuchung vorhandene Irlandbilder in ihrer Genese, Entwicklung und Wirkung und leistet so einen Beitrag zur komparatistischen Imagologie. Ziel der Arbeit ist es nicht, konstatierte Irlandbilder, die durchaus eine objektiv nachweisbare Wirkung auf den außerliterarischen Bereich und die Rezeption von Literatur ausüben, im Sinne der Völkerpsychologie als wahr oder falsch zu klassifizieren. Am konkreten Beispiel Irlands wird vielmehr der Einfluß von Alteritätserfahrungen auf die Bildung literarischer Stereotypen sowie - umgekehrt - die Bedeutung von Literatur für die Wahrnehmung des Fremden, das immer in Abgrenzung zum Eigenen erfahren wird, nachgewiesen.

    Globalization has encouraged worldwide mobility, intensified migration and supported growing interconnectedness through new technologies; it has therefore substantially contributed to the development of so-called transnational spaces. This volume focuses on transnational spaces which should not be understood as locations on a map or as sealed containers, but instead as relational social areas which are composed of various relationships. Transnationalization increases liberation and/or emancipation from place because social relations overcome physical space and local, regional and national boundaries. As a consequence, a reconfiguration of social, cultural, political and economic scopes of action occurs. This volume reveals that for people in general and for migration movements in particular, new borders have been established in many places all over the world. The biographies of global actors and migrants reference this alteration of space. Additionally this volume calls special attention to border regions and their social configurations. Borders appear as narratives which can have an enormous impact on social structures. This book further deals with different aspects and various tensions having to do with local and global change, interplay and interdependence. Globalization leads to development that often ignores regional needs, supports the continuation of post-colonial power and maintains hegemonic dominance.
