    The struggle against neoliberal order has gained momentum over the last five decades---to the point that economic elites have not only adapted to the Left's critiques but incorporated them for capitalist expansion. Venture funds expose their ties to slavery and pledge to invest in racial equity. Banks pitch microloans as a path to indigenous self-determination. Fair-trade brands narrate consumption as an act of feminist solidarity with women artisans in the global South. In Capitalist Humanitarianism Lucia Hulsether examines these projects and the contexts of their emergence. Blending historical and ethnographic styles, and traversing intimate and global scales, Hulsether tracks how neoliberal self-critique creates new institutional hegemonies that, in turn, reproduce racial and neocolonial dispossession. From the archives of Christian fair traders to luxury social entrepreneurship conferences, from US finance offices to Guatemalan towns flooded with their loan products, from service economy desperation to the internal contradictions of social movements, Hulsether argues that capitalist humanitarian projects are fueled as much by a profit motive as by a hope that racial capitalism can redeem the losses that accumulate in its wake

'Humanitarian performance' argues that the humanitarian project - from its history and rationale to its contemporary practice - can be productively explored through the critical lens of performance studies. Using the outpouring of international support for projects to benefit survivors of the Asian tsunami, the war in Kosovo, and the crisis in Darfur as case studies, this timely volume explores humanitarian attention to these narratives and the stories of tragedy and survival that emerge. With the peculiar focus and international audiences that the media brings to local tragedies, these contemporary disasters - and the humanitarianism that they elicit - become performance on the world's stage

    The struggle against neoliberal order has gained momentum over the last five decades---to the point that economic elites have not only adapted to the Left's critiques but incorporated them for capitalist expansion. Venture funds expose their ties to slavery and pledge to invest in racial equity. Banks pitch microloans as a path to indigenous self-determination. Fair-trade brands narrate consumption as an act of feminist solidarity with women artisans in the global South. In Capitalist Humanitarianism Lucia Hulsether examines these projects and the contexts of their emergence. Blending historical and ethnographic styles, and traversing intimate and global scales, Hulsether tracks how neoliberal self-critique creates new institutional hegemonies that, in turn, reproduce racial and neocolonial dispossession. From the archives of Christian fair traders to luxury social entrepreneurship conferences, from US finance offices to Guatemalan towns flooded with their loan products, from service economy desperation to the internal contradictions of social movements, Hulsether argues that capitalist humanitarian projects are fueled as much by a profit motive as by a hope that racial capitalism can redeem the losses that accumulate in its wake

    Dass die Zeit kontinuierlich verläuft, dass ihre Unterteilung stets ein bloßer Akt der Willkür ist, dass bei jeder Veränderung, gleich wie tief der Einschnitt erscheint, vieles auch unverändert bleibt - diese und ähnliche Annahmen gehören zu den kaum verrückbaren geschichtswissenschaftlichen Grundüberzeugungen, denen gegenüber sich jede kulturwissenschaftliche Frage nach Diskontinuitäten oder Brüchen im historischen Geschehen von vornherein im Nachteil befindet. Um diesen Nachteil auszugleichen, bietet es sich an, eine Art Umgehungsmanöver zu veranstalten, indem man sich darüber Gedanken macht, wie sich historische Akteure zum Problem des Bruchs mit der Vergangenheit verhalten.

    This article explores some of the moral meanings vested in the concept of historicization. With the help of a discussion of Jules Michelet's notions about the "duty of the historian" - to rescue the dead from oblivion - it becomes possible to flesh out these moral meanings and to insert them into a series of historical contexts. These contexts comprise the cultural history of humanitarian morality in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and the intellectual and cultural histories of ideas of immortality, memory, forgetting, and the valorization of the human life. The resulting meaning of historicization is that of a humanitarianism for the dead, with all the ambiguities this position entails.

    Die Rettung von Menschenleben ist eine von vielen Aktivitäten, deren Regelung souveränen Staaten obliegt. Historisch betrachtet gibt es verschiedene Definitionen von Souveränität. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bedeutet sie jedoch überwiegend die Kontrolle von Grenzen und die Verabschiedung von Gesetzen innerhalb derselben. So lassen sich die vielfältigen Verbindungen des Begriffs der Souveränität mit der Geschichte des Schiffbruchs und der Lebensrettung im 19. Jahrhundert auf zweierlei Weise untersuchen: Erstens ausgehend von der Souveränität als einer Form der rechtlichen, (bio)politischen, diplomatischen, territorialen bzw. maritimen Kontrolle, die zunehmend mit humanitären, kommerziellen und sicherheitspolitischen Fragen verknüpft wurde; zweitens anhand der Figur des Souveräns, der als Schirmherr und Förderer humanitärer Initiativen, einschließlich der Seenotrettungsgesellschaften, fungierte und für die Entstehung und das Selbstverständnis dieser Gesellschaften von zentraler Bedeutung war.

    Frankreichs Seenotrettungsgesellschaft, die Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer (SNSM), geht auf einen Zusammenschluss zweier Einrichtungen zurück, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts mit ursprünglich unterschiedlichen Zielsetzungen entstanden sind: Die Société Centrale de Sauvetage des Naufragés (SCSN) wurde 1865 unter der Schirmherrschaft von Kaiserin Eugénie speziell zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger gegründet. Der 1873 im bretonischen Rennes gegründeten Société des Hospitaliers Sauveteurs Bretons (SHSB) hingegen ging es allgemein um die Rettung von Menschen, die unverschuldet in Not geraten waren. [.] Doch schon nach wenigen Jahren konzentrierte sich die SHSB entgegen ihrer ursprünglichen Zielsetzung fast ausschließlich auf die Rettung schiffbrüchiger Seeleute. In dieser Entwicklung zeigt sich eine Spannung, ein erklärungsbedürftiges Missverhältnis zwischen dem ursprünglichen, allgemeinen humanitären Anspruch und der praktischen Umsetzung konkreter Maßnahmen.

    Als 2008 die Finanzkrise eskalierte, vollzog sich eine irritierende Veränderung in der Semantik von 'Rettung'. Während nämlich einerseits unbedingte Imperative der Rettung finanzieller und fiskalischer Institutionen aufkamen, 'whatever it takes', wurde andererseits der Rettungsimperativ für Menschen in Seenot immer problematischer. Insbesondere im Kontext von Flucht und Migration im Mittelmeerraum begannen Regierungen, humanitäre Rettungsbemühungen zu kriminalisieren, während sie doch zugleich unterlassene Hilfeleistungen ebenfalls strafrechtlich verfolgten. Über lange Zeit hatten Schiffbrüchige im öffentlichen Diskurs die Stelle als privilegierte Zielobjekte unbedingter Rettungsimperative besetzt, die sogar das Risiko eines Selbstopfers in Kauf zu nehmen verlangten. Nun schien es, als sei diese Stelle umbesetzt worden. Dass eine solche Umbesetzung aber überhaupt möglich war, warf nicht zuletzt die Frage danach auf, wie es eigentlich um die Geschichtlichkeit derartiger Imperative insgesamt bestellt ist. Diesem Problemzusammenhang geht das Forschungsprojekt "Archipelagische Imperative.Schiffbruch und Lebensrettung in europäischen Gesellschaften seit 1800" nach, indem es unter anderem untersucht, wie die Schiffbrüchigen überhaupt dazu gekommen waren, die fragliche Stelle zu besetzen.

    In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts haben rasante technologische Entwicklungen die Seefahrt insgesamt und damit auch das nautische Rettungswesen von Grund auf verändert. Mit motorisierten Booten, Funk- und Radartechnik - und später Rettungsflugzeugen - wird es möglich, neue notlindernde und lebensrettende Praktiken zu etablieren, die Effizienz der Maßnahmen zu steigern und zudem den geografischen Radius der Einsätze erheblich auszuweiten. Weniger offenkundig ist, in welcher Weise diese Entwicklungen auf das Gefüge der Normen und Werte zurückwirken, das der humanitären Seenotrettung zugrunde liegt, und inwiefern sie daran beteiligt sind, den Schiffbruch als einen bestimmten "Situationstyp" zu definieren. Diese Aspekte bilden den Ausgangspunkt meiner Untersuchung, die der Frage nachgeht, wie sich die Herausbildung von Normen und normsetzenden Paradigmen alternativ zu den großen Erzählungen des Humanitarismus beschreiben lässt.
